They didn't think it would be good. They thought that was all the money they could squeeze out of it. Key is a brand name and a 13-episode anime is what it's worth these days.

They fucked up when they decided to adapt Rewrite in the first place.

You just can't adapt "long" VNs to 1 cour. Hell, 2 cour wouldn't be enough.
Many failed VN adaptations should prove this.

Short ones like Planetarian works (hence the good reception and upped pre-orders) but long ones like Rewrite? Nah, no way in hell they'll be able to satisfy both the players and newcomers.

I'm enjoying it so far. Definitely felt a bit weird with the sudden drama but I just saw it as time to move the plot along. It's pretty clear that he's gonna go around learning that everyone else has superpowers too and start to unravel some sort of story behind it all.
