General indication of power level is Outer God > Elder God > Great Old One > basic aliens (i.e. Yith or Mi-Go)/sorcerer > regular humans. Internal to the divisions of course have all sorts of variation, however. This power levels are so concrete that it is immediately noticeable when a writer fucks up the ordering and doesn't know what they're talking about.

Some Outer Gods include predominantly Azathoth, Yog-Sothoth, and Nyarlathotep, who are representative of their cosmic pessimism. Azathoth is the Blind Idiot Gods who dreams reality and doesn't give a fuck about anything. Yog-Sothoth transcends the material universe entirely, is capable of granting just about anything requested of him he cares to, and is utterly amoral. Nyarlathotep is a super douche and is by far the most active of the Outer Gods and the only one who gives a shit about humans - he loves them because they're super fucking amusing. Essentially nothing in existence can stop Nyarlathotep from fucking whatever he wants short of the mad Daemon Sultan's mandate.

Some Great Old Ones include Cthulhu, Dagon, and Shub-Niggurath (in the CoC tabletop setting, Shubby is an Outer God, but this makes no sense as she is a fundamentally tangible and comparable meager being). There are the ones we traditionally think of, the ones that lay sleeping on Earth who may awaken when the stars are right and bring a horrid end to our quaint, transient civilization. The Elder Gods, such as Nodens, are the ones who sealed them in slumber on Earth in the first place (because the GOO were douchebags), and interfere with human affairs to lead them into prolonging the GOO's dormancy.

The strength of the GOO vary pretty substantially - Cthulhu, for instance, could destroy Earth on his own through a burst of his maddening psychic power, which would bring an end to humanity in short order. Dagon, however, seems a wholly physical being who is just a big ugly kaiju.

Basic alien civilizations such as the Mi-Go, Yith, Colour from Space, etc. are far more advanced than humanity and can do things like travel space, preserve our brains in jars, send our consciousnesses through space and time without our say in the matter, descend upon our small mudball and drain the vitality out of an entire location, etc. They do not on an individual basis have the potentially global influence of a GOO - they are just really fucking alien people whose existence is by default inimical to us. But if you took one Mi-Go and one mundane human or even just had a war between the Mi-Go and humanity, the Mi-Go would probably wreck humanity's sweet adolescent asshole with their chitinous insectoid horsecocks. This is not completely absolute, however - there are those maddened sorcerers of eldritch lore who might call upon the power of, say, Yog-Sothoth and, given he listens, they may even have an advantage (whether the Mi-Go are particularly religious or secular varies from portrayal to portrayal).

Absolutely none of the above has any meaning in the face of an Outer God, however. Not even the Great Old Ones or Elder Gods have any great significance by comparison. All of us are pathetic beings swept about my cosmic forces beyond our control in the Seething Nuclear Chaos' sick dream. Indeed, at the end of the day, not even Nyarlathotep can escape the utterly arbitrary will of the Blind Idiot God who he is the soul and herald of. There is no escape in Lovecraft's universe, for it is founded on madness, emptiness, futility, and sob stories.

There's also some interpretations where he wants to uplift humanity to be more like him (that is, a sadistic cosmic douche who just wants to treat everything in existence as a toy to alleviate his eternal boredom) because he's lonely and humans, being a completely nonsensical race, are the closest things to him around. And that's pretty cute. The default, however, is that he simply likes finding new ways to drive humanity extinct in alternate realities over and over and over, which is a lot more grimdark.

Thomas Ligotti, who is basically the heir and successor to Lovecraft's legacy in the modern day, really drives this point home in his philosophical work The Conspiracy Against the Human Race. You should all go read it, it's fun.

Granted this is kind of a meme that has as much to do with Nyarla's role in the Dream Quest and how he was expounded upon among several of Lovecraft's contemporaries. Even so, he was kind of Lovecraft's embodiment of cosmic pessimism, so it really fits at the end of the day.

What's embarrassing is how you pretend to know about Lovecraft's intentions when you probably heard all of that second hand and just decided "it makes sense that he had no greater presentation in mind". Granted, you're at least right in that it only started to become formalized when Lovecraft's friends starting circlejerking over it too. August Derleth in particular rarely had a perfect idea what he was talking about, Christfag that he was.

And yes, a lot of his stories are pretty stand alone. It is perfectly arguable whether some works attributed to the Cthulhu Mythos were supposed to be included at all. There is, however, an enduring theme throughout all of his works, a particular worldview that allows the majority of them to mesh extraordinarily well.

In that sense I can't disagree. Cthulhu and his crew do have a lot of little details and embellishment attributed to them, but they aren't really characters in and of themselves even though they hypothetically could be. Within Lovecraft's work, they're (comparatively tiny) representatives of a much larger horrific truth - that existence is fundamentally a chaotic, amoral, hostile realm that human consciousness is neither particularly effectively adapted to nor whatsoever special or great within. And that's legitimately how Lovecraft felt about himself in relation to the universe as a whole.

But I would also assert that there's nothing wrong with lorefagging over Lovecraft's pointless details, since after about the chronological first third of his writings they're generally consistent and it's all in good fun if you have the core ideals in mind.

Azathoth yes. Representing general laws of reality like entropy and gravity, Azathoth is generally in slumber and the only affect he/it has is somniloquy. Which, granted, can direct Nyarlathotep and warp reality because he's essentially god - a Blind Idiot God at that. If he were to awaken, reality as we know it would end, as all is but his dream. We know this because while his involvement is minimal, he is described as extensively as he needs to be.

Representing space and time, Yog-Sothoth does get involved in places and even can answer prayers because he/it is omniscient. He is involved in the horrors of (but isn't the mastermind because he doesn't give a shit) the Dunwich Horror and even appears to a person directly in Through the Gates of the Silver Key. He knows what limits the human mind has because he's omniscient, but generally can't be assed to bother shielding them from the eldritch truths of the cosmos because he's absolutely amoral.

And then Nyarlarthotep is a dick.

You can see how Lovecraft's view of existence bled into his biggest gods.
