Typically, yanderes are jealous and out to sabotage the competition; competition implies the MC has social skills + interactions with other people/girlfriends. It's generally necessary for any plot, and for the yandere to really have an excuse to go full psycho.

I think the thrill of yanderes is in the fear + adrenaline that knowing someone that crazy is willing to stalk you like that. It's a weird, mentally unstable corruption of love; not really the kind of love you are used to seeing.

I like it, when there's a reason to the yandere's love. Like the MC doing something to help her out in the past, but while he considered it minor, it was actually of great importance to her.

Imagine the yandere got bullied in the past and MC was the only one to help, then PLOT happens and they're seperated for a few years. As they meet again, MC might have forgotten already but her admiration for him will have turned into a twisted love over the years, due to being unable to express her gratitude while they were seperated.

Yanderes appeal to me due to their unconditional love and because they're usually "damaged" girls, which makes me want to protect them.
