Of course they are. In every possible way.
Babies don't have to work, study, clean the house or anything like that. That's why they can put all their time and effort into learning a language and that's why they do it well. Plus, like I said, they don't waste their time overthinking - or thinking, at all - about how they should do it or if they're doing it right; they just do it.
>>
>>144623809
any reason why specifically?
I downloaded it and it seems more suited to reading VNs with a machine translation rather than letting me instantly check definitions of words I don't know

I also just tried VNR and was pretty disappointed, it's slow and the UI is trash

Built-in parsers are bad. Parsers make mistakes constantly because grammar is not trivially parsable, and even when the parser is not making mistakes, you're still harming your ability to acquire new structures of japanese because parsers break holes in your brain's preexisting systems for recognize things when you read writing. Those mental systems have to be trained by recognizing things yourself and parsers are basically only useful to people who literally don't know anything about the language at all, like they've studied for less than a week. If you've studied for less than a week, you shouldn't be trying to read VNs.

If you use a texthooker you need to set up a mouseover dictionary program with it. Mouseover dictionaries are better than parsers because parsers make mistakes The most commonly recommended way to do it is to have a clipboard grabbing addon with rikaisama on firefox, even if you don't use firefox, because rikaisama is just that good. There is a step-by-step guide to setting that up. But you don't have to do this if you can find an alternative mouseover dictionary that you like.

ITHVNR uses a more up-to-date ITH core than Chiitrans. It's capable of hooking more games with fewer problems.

You suspend them and do them outside of anki. Your brain is refusing to learn them because you burned them out so hard. You basically can't recognize them inside of SRS now. You need to make up for that burn-out with brute force exposure instead of more brute force recognition that won't work.

Do you think it makes sense to do a Kanji deck on top of the vocab deck?

I think it could help understanding the meaning of words built using them or not?

Also even if I don't know a word when reading something, I could look it up pretty easy if I know how to write the kanji.
>>
>>144625803
>>144626173
Thank you, I suspended them but I don't know how to get them in my custom study session now.
Can you tell me how to add them?

Sorry for being stupid, I just can't into anki.
>>
>>144627225
Click on your deck
Click browse which is on the top center next to "decks" and "add"
In the window that pops up, to the left are a bunch of different categories
Suspended cards should show up under the suspended category

Now, you take those words and do study outside of anki. Stop looking at their flashcards.
Write them out, find phrases that use it, clarify doubts with /djt/ or just brute force memorise it.

Cards get suspended because Anki clearly isn't helping you so you have to help yourself.

>>
>>144627789
I misread your post

If memory serves me well, the animal names would be in hiragana as imouto 氏 points out in this post >>144627674. The words for dog and cat can be in either hiragana or katakana, but the corresponding kanji is really easy so that'll be used most of the time, in contrast to something like 麒麟.

The hiragana form is used more commonly over katakana, but in this case, Koiwai's speech bubble is probably using the katakana form because he's putting emphasis on the word/pronouncing it in some weird way. As for which of these it is, I'm afraid I don't remember because it's been almost a year since I read that chapter.
>>
>>144627865
Ah, that makes sense. Thank you both. Hopefully I'll still remember this by the time I get to the chapter.

Also, could you tell me if I am correct in understanding that when「さん」is added after a name, imouto thinks that the katakana form would be used instead of the hiragana form? I feel as though there's a typo in the last line, but then again my nip is とても下手.
>>
>>144628007
Lol I'm not too sure what imouto is saying either. From my experience though both hiragana and katakana can be used with さん. I can't tell you whether there's any nuance to it or not, because that's a production problem and I do not bother with (read: am terrible at) production.

Irony is something that shouldn't be happening, happening.

A pest exterminator who shouldn't have a pest infection, having a pest infection, is ironic.
A bottle of drink with a label "Do not drink" on it that shouldn't be drunk, being empty, is ironic.
A anon name calling anon is a ESL, which shouldn't be making mistakes, is very kinda ironic.
Earthworms and azaleas which shouldn't be encountered anywhere other than the wild, being said that they will never be seen in the wild, is ironic.
Of course, I'm aware he's referring to the kanji but generalising and twisting words is all part of humour.

Sorry for a question that I'm sure gets asked a lot, but I just finished hiragana and katakana, and I'm not sure where to go from here. The guide says I can spend 3 months learning all the kanji without learning any actual words, or get started with the Core 2K deck and just learn kanji as I build a vocabulary. Is there a consensus to which one is better, or are they really both fine? I'm leaning towards isolated kanji study because I feel like I won't be able to pick up on kanji when learning vocabulary, but I'm afraid I'll be a shell of my former self after learning 2000 kanji and then having no vocabulary, and having to start the whole learning process over.
>>
>>144633482
Yeah core is unarguably better, lone kanji study is useless. Also start Tae Kim at the same time.
>>
>>144633482
Core first. Kanji study is useful for identifying radicals since some characters will be near indistinguishable for you.
>>
>>144633482
As someone who's done kanji study, I don't know if I could recommend anyone do it right after learning kana, while it does have benefits it's kind of pointless that early on

What I'd recommend to you is focusing like 80% on grammar while casually doing the core deck in anki on the side, since grammar is the biggest hurdle and most important step for a beginner, you can also maybe do a radical deck since that's kind of like kanji study but on a waaaay smaller scale, and is actually 100% useful

After you've got a good understanding of the language, and maybe have read some easy shit a bit (probably not anytime soon), if you still feel like kanji in vocabulary is giving you trouble, then you can maybe think about doing kanji study

Get a grammar guide of your choice.
You need to learn conjugations, what particles are and such, and don't feel intimidated because the content is pretty short and easy (I'm telling you not to spend months in it).

After that you should be able to read simpler stuff (easily read textbook) and you can pick up colloquial speech with mangos/novels.

Vocabulary will come eventually as you read, and that includes kanji too.

It's a lot easier to memorize and/or reproduce a given word when you know the alphabet, so it makes sense that a kanji should be easier to memorize and rewrite when you can separate and identify all the little symbols which make it up.
Also I understand the radicals have something to do with the way dictionaries work, which might be handy. In any case there aren't that many of them so I thought I might as well give it a try, and it's actually kind of interesting as well.
>>
>>144635648
Mmmm?
How do you write kanji if you don't know the radicals?

It would be a bitch to have to memorise every new kanji as one by itself.
Rather, you just need to remember a couple hundred bits that repeat themselves throughout i.e radicals.

Though the key bit is really searching unknown words in the dictionary. Recognising radicals to look up in the dictionary is a godsend.

How on earth have you been doing your studies?

Easy, as long as you've never attempted a long term goal and don't know how difficult it can be to do something longer than a few weeks consistently.

I've been learning Japanese for 4 years and I read and listen every day still and I'm still learning, still not happy with my level.

It might seem from a beginner perspective that maybe I'm just a slow exception or something, but in reality I've been consistent since the beginning and it actually just takes much longer than most people think to become fluent.

Here is an example of something that you could easily understand in English, but is really difficult to understand completely in a foreign language:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HghXOY3Y5QA

If you cannot understand something like that I would not consider you to be fluent.
>>
>>144638197
Do you still do anki? If so how many words you got?
>>
>>144638197
Well, english isn't my native tongue and that was my experience with it so...
I mean, 8 months of study and i wasn't as advanced ( couldn't play my vidya in english without going through a dictionnary every other sentence ).

Then again, i didn't had anki as a crutch, so i'm probably optimistic yeah. Anki is really awesome to force you to do it everyday, which is the most important aspect of language learning ( i.e. exploiting transfer to long-term memory during sleep which obviously can't be binged once but need to happen daily ).

Shit, i need a similar program for the grammar guide. A program forcing you to read a book everyday should already exist, right ?

Hell no, I've read daily for 4 years and I'd estimate my vocab to maybe 10k. 40k would take exponentially longer, so pretty much AT LEAST a decade of not only reading, but living in Japan and actively interacting with as much Japanese as you can.

Or amphetamines and 8 hours of anki a day

I mistyped my post. I meant to say they are not counted as different words.

You would be surprised how often simple concepts are expressed using multiple words in English, compared to Japanese where they just have a single word for it. Take a word like 木漏れ日. Common concept, everyone knows what it is, yet there's no word for it in English.

That is the reason there is more words in Japanese than English, it has nothing to do with "counting conjugations".

There are only a handful of conjugations like that that may count though, 食べず wouldn't be considered a separate word for example.

1. read japanese at my level
2. find grammar i don't understand

if googling the grammar point itself doesn't work I search actual japanese sites for other sentences using it in a context i understand.

this has worked for 90% of the grammar i've come across. everything else is probably very dialectal or colloquial speech equivalent to weird niggerspeak in English.

Genki is good although I'd recommend also picking up Japanese The Manga Way with it (it's pretty cheap anyway, like $20 so it wont add that much to your costs if you're buying Genki anyway).

I have issues with anxiety and it seems to get worse when I'm doing Anki. >>
>>144654087
You could google it and get tons of info, but it's basically just.
1. Sit down
2. Get comfortable
3. Focus your attention on something, like your breathing

Other than that, just keep in mind that focusing really just means constantly directing your mind to that one thing. You don't think about it, you're just aware of it. In the case of breathing, you focus on how it feels running through your nose, or the movements of your chest. And if you get distracted, which you will be many, many times, you just direct your mind back to what you're supposed to focus on. No need to focus on whether or not your focusing on it, you'll just notice it when you're not focused and be able to refocus.

Still, go ahead and google it, as other people can explain it better, but it really just boils down to that idea of continually focusing.

>>144654381
Feeling calm is a nice side effect, but the main goal is to do it regularly in order to train your mind to focus better. Modern neuroscience seems to support that the ability to focus is like a muscle that you can train.

You don't need to be a PS master to make an OP pic, you just need to know the basics and have a bit of an eye for style. And you being able to make that cat edit just now means you're good enough. Take this guy's one, for example. It's literally just an anime screenshot with "DJT" on it but it's a pretty good image.
>>
>>144657021
It's ineffective but also very low effort.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice quantity of information for aesthetics. Anyone with a brain will read the guide anyway.
>>
>>144657535
Do you want to learn Japanese or do you want to sit around doing shit that barely takes effort
>>

Both.
>>
>>144657625

I want to sit around doing shit that barely takes effort.
>>
>>144655620

what grammar guide should I read, then?

I've reached the point where I can actually read shit out loud but have no idea what I'm reading.
>>
>>144657591
If you were really a master of both aesthetics and information, you could have "read the guide" written subtley in the sky with clouds in that picture
>>
>>144657726
Welp you're in the right place for it
>>
>>144657827
if you can't reverse engineer the entirety of modern japanese grammar solely from watching anime you might as well give up now

someone help a nigga out
I need a VN with minimal "inner monologue" type stuff and mostly character dialogue

it's impossible to stay interested in a game when I have to read through 50 lines of a text describing a scene when there's an image showing off the scene right above the text
I know manga is best for this but text hookers are so much quicker to use than OCR

No. Anyone who says otherwise is trying to bait you into joining their autistic weeaboo circlejerk that happens to have more than one DJT regular.

there is but no one is gonna post it in the thread lol

じゃあ is a conjunction
さあ is an interjection
まあ is an adverb

There is no secret club.

People who say there's a secret club are making shit up to look cool.

If someone tries to convince you there's a secret club, either insist on evidence or don't respond to them.

Ignore secret club posters. Report secret club posters. Shun people who seriously think that satellite communities are somehow a good idea. Punch the faces of people that admit to making fun of the community in private. Cripple the bodies of people that claim it's natural or normal. Banish people who conspire.

also fuck hipster chat services.

>>

It's a skype run by an investorbait company with zero accountability and shitloads of astroturfing.

The person who asked about a DJT discord is a mechanical turk hired by an SEO company to ask about discords for insulated communities.
>>
>>144662117
Discord is as close as you can get to anonymity in a voice chat program though, it's not like you have to register an account or anything, you can just show up and start talking.
