Think for a minute what a sword strike looks like. If you want to get as much power from a swing as you can, you have to put your back into it, in a twisting motion. You really can't strike with an offhand weapon at the same time without subtracting from the power of your mainhand weapon.

If you want to forego defense, you are much better off with a two handed weapon. Not only do you get more power from your swings, you get more reach as well.

Fiction isn't practical and it is rarely interesting outside of its fantastical elements.

These are true though. I don't know if you meant miles as in the distance or miles as the knight, but while swords were more of a warrior-class thing at the start of the middle ages, by the time plate armor was popular, swords were fucking everywhere, everyone could afford one.
Dex is more important than str when dealing with cutting weapons most of the time. The dynamic does change when it involve bludgeoning (wich was indeed done a lot on the XVth century battlefield with all those sweet polearms), wrestling and archery.
And yes, katanas are good weapons. They aren't elder god tier, but they are good weapons. If they were shit, the japs wouldn't have used them as sidearms and would have just used chinese swords or kanabo.

My teacher is the typical guy, 1,65cm, no muscles, etc, and you cant pass his defence, he reflects every fucking slash with ease and stab/slash you after that.

Live action is a slightly different story, though. Realistic sword fighting that isnt boring might not be very safe for the actors (and stuntmen). Japanese warfare has used shields before, but as you've probably noticed again, a lot of popularly represented weaponry in Japanese is two-handed.

While shields in western and Chinese/Korean warfare were often used, they were also used in elaborately choreographed formations that I'm sure you can see in any film about the Greeks or Romans.

Japan on the other hand trended towards smaller skirmishes and that pretty much preferred large groups of soldiers engaging in individual combat, not to mention the enormous size of their weapons would make copying western/Chinese formations difficult.

They'd also use propped-up shields(think like a sandbag wall you'd see in modern times) to hide behind, instead of handheld stuff.

So by the time you get to the Sengoku era, which is pretty much the one Japan is constantly cribbing for a "not-modern" visual motif, it's also about the time you see the introduction of the firearm en masse. Everybody's pretty much moved past the shield as armor has improved to where shields(bucklers) are more useful for deflecting and redirecting rather than bearing the full-on brunt of the attack, and even beyond that, warfare is reorganizing around the rifle/firearm and more maneuverability, around the world in general.

Japan simply got into the game too late for shields to become an intrinsic element, and so it isn't really going to have a presence beyond artists interested in western-style elements of a particular period.

Polearms were only used to any large extent in places where tight formations of melee infantry were common for extended periods of time and even then not always (Roman heavy infantry used missiles and swords). This pretty much means Greece and Ellinistic world, then, after a large period of absence, Europe, a couple of centuries at most in Japan, and I guess various periods in China, but the last time Chinese had remotely effective infantry before westernization (if ever) was, like, in early Han. A short spear that can be used equally in melee and for throwing is not a polearm. But keep clinging to your /tg/ delusions if you wish.

That is because of hollywood combat.
Hollywood choreography is far from how people really fought with weapons.
Prime example sowrd fights, especially with katana are not a festival of parrying and blocking nearly every strike.
The blade crushing on metal will destroy the edge of the blade sooner or later, rather sooner than later, when hitting metal.
You either evade or try to end it fast, with samurai and katana (main weapons were actually bow and spear) it was all about evading the and placing the perfect strike to bring down the enemy.

Most people have no real comprehension how a fight with weapons actually looks and think hollywood artists actually do this shit real.
Hell hollywood has since decades also given most of the world wrong impressions on how explosions look, because they often simply fill big plastic bags with diesel or something some other fuel and remote denotate it to get those flame strike, the even use this shit for tank and artillery shells hitting the ground.

Knights with modern-era weaponry is damn cool but underutilized due to how infrequent firearms make their way to fantasy settings, with guns usually being just flintlock/matchlock to "make things more fair."
