But you are all misconstruing that as having a crush, which is understandable, but not what I think is going on.

Keep in mind that Japanese people are typically much more private and restrained than we are in the West, so Pikari's behavior could be seen as downright embarrassing by her peers.

I don't know -- anime adaptations have a habit of making things like manga gags less tolerable.

Instead of placing, say, a silly face that occupied a small panel at the border of an anime's frame, they may cut to that in the center and add some overbearing sound effect that lasts a full second or more. Fucks up the flow.

In manga, you have to create your own distinct voices for each character. For me, I find this extremely difficult and irritating, as the characters typically change their tone throughout the manga. One moment you think you've got them dialed down, and the next they're so different that they seem completely out of character to your brain. Anime solves all of that and makes it flow easily, soothingly when it comes to SoL like this.
