Devilman. Accept no substitute. It's fucking perfect. The manga industry ever since nagai's career began has been him breaking new ground and everyone else rushing after him.

Monster's great but I think Pluto is Urasawa's best, and I wasn't even into Astro Boy when I first read it.
Manga is a superior art form to anime confirmed.

Battle Angel Alita, or Gunnm if you're a weeb.
Battle Angel Alita: Last Order is also a fantastic science fiction story, although veers into shark jumping territory a few times, the story pulls itself back in surprising ways.
And Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou.

Full Metal Alchemist.
It's the most novel-like and least bloated manga I've read. Even OP's choice, while superb, goes on so long and has so many twists and turns that you suspect it's padded to sell more comics and it loses a bit of impact.
But FMA has a story to tell, it tells it cleanly, it's fantastically paced and builds up to a great climax.... And then it ends. Nicely wrapped up.
