The puppetry most westerns are familiar with is muppets. Which, incidentally, function much like the puppets here do, being manipulated from below rather than above with strings, Pinocchio style. Obviously, it's nowhere near as actiony or as a refined as the puppetry here.

The closest western Puppetry most are probably familiar with is probably the Dark Crystal, done by the same guy who started the Muppets. It's been so long I don't recall how good the puppetry was or what kind. I remember it being pretty good and it was probably done like the muppets, but with higher production values. It was also an adventure movie, and while it had action, it wasn't the kind of heavily martial arts focused affair Thunderbolt Fantasy is.

I'd say this would probably be many western /a/ goers first encounter with a puppet show of this caliber. For most Westerns, puppets are even more kiddy than cartoons, with most the most famous being aimed explicitly at younger children. There is also absolutely no puppet media for adults outside of the family oriented Muppet Show, and one offs like Team America where, again, the "adult action movie done with puppets" is the joke. Or Anomalisa, which was just a modern character drama using puppets, and was stop motion as well.
