Oh hey, I come in to dump a chapter, but there's a nice Scanlation Thread to greet me!

I made this today for anyone that is hoping to do digital raws
>>
>>144548577
Thank you, I am a newbie to scanlation and will make use of this.
>>
>>144548577
You call that light?
>>
>>144546996
>What do you think about the current scanlation community? Or lack thereof?

It's been nice and quiet lately. No big drama, though I guess that means it's boring. Not that I've been able to keep my ear to the ground over the past three weeks. Did I miss anything? Are big groups still shit? (yes)

Too much exclusion and infighting. I'm glad to be pretty much done with big groups. If scanlators would work together a lot more could be done in decent quality.

>>144549006
The threshold is high but the radius also being high prevents that from having a huge effect. The only thing it goes overboard on is colored pages, but with most color pages, if you level a little bit and resize there's not much to worry about.
>>
>>144546996
Do scanlation groups still translate old complete manga, like Rokudenashi Blues or something?
>>
>>144549223
Shoujo, I know.
Shounen.
Mecha, I know they're pretty uncommon of course
>>
>>144549121
Rookies is the best manga I've read, it's basically a delinquent manga with a baseball focus. The first practise match is sort of boring but that's fairly early on and the rest is god-tier. It's fully translated as well.

I think Dantes Divine comedy and other old Nagai stuff was finished recently

>then you're going to arbitrarily chop the page down to a pixel number instead of using percentage based resizing so that can you screw up all of the scaling within the image and moire it to hell and back
>now you're pro
And he's a fucking namefag, no less.
>>
>>144549325
Divine comedy looks awesome, thanks anon.
>>
>>144549318
Thanks. I'll look into it
>>
>>144548047
Can you share the raw? Would like to see this.
>>
>>144548577
You were doing great up until that last step. There is absolutely no reason to lower the image size from 1200 to 1000, if anything you should be increasing it to 1400 to make it more readable.
>>
>>144549449
It's a simple way to do it, and i've run into a lot of digital raws with these specs... I guess they could be bigger or smaller depending on the resolution you capture them at, but idea's still the same. But yeah guess it proabbly still needs workshopping

>>144549551
But boosting the size'll just make it blurry... I reduce the size to make the linework cleaner. As long as it's typeset well it'll be readable, unless you're working with gag manga, I suppose
>>
Spent weeks scanlating a full color doujin on my own. Loved the doujin and couldn't have been more proud of how great my work turned out. Released it and got tons of feedback about how much everyone hated it (not my work, just the doujin itself). So as punishment, I'm now doing the sequel to it (also full color).

That'll teach people to not like what I like.
>>
>>144549620
>But boosting the size'll just make it blurry
Digital raws are already blurry. If you really care about that, just do it before you level and it'll get rid of the blur along with the compression. Cleaner linework is worthless if it's too small to even see.
>>
>>144549728
Good point, I'll try that!

That's shit though. You have to sacrifice page size when it is already small.
Just use topaz denoise on about 10 to 15% to get rid of most artifacting and with about 10% sharpening, and then level it.

Alternatively buy and rip the digital raws yourself so they don't look like shit in the first place
>>

No, it's a bad way to do it.
Stop blurring pages.
Stop trimming without scaling.
Stop making "guides" for how to fuck up manga.

>>144549449
Okay, I'm a total beginner at this, but why is percent based scaling better? And how do I determine which percentage, let's say for a 600dpi scan after cropping?
>>
>>144550141
Wait why do you say trimming instead of scaling?
Do you know what Image Size is? That IS scaling it down.
Do you know how surface blur works? If you set the radius high it doesn't affect the lines at all
>>
>>144550166
Find a different manga website and don't come back.
>>
>>144550242
>why is percent based scaling better
It's not. There's really no difference, and when you're working with scans it'll just make all the pages different heights because of different cropping on each page.
>>
>>144550242
>but why is percent based scaling better?
Because if you arbitrarily paste a random pixel number, like say 1000px height, it doesn't take into account the original image size and ends up making all of the linework and tones resize disproportionately.

Not all pages are the same physical size. Books have different formats and people also sometimes scan them at different DPI.

If you resize with actual scaling instead of an arbitrary number of pixels, you maintain the page's original proportions. The linework and tones are all scaled up or down proportionally instead of disproportionately, which means you do not invoke moire patterns and jagged resizing.

>And how do I determine which percentage, let's say for a 600dpi scan after cropping?
The percentage can be anything, because no matter what it's still going to be a proportional resize of the original dimensions. It all comes down to how big of a resolution you want your pages to be at. Generally, I take 600dpi scans and resize them to 50% of the original resolution.
>>
>>144550513
If you paste in 1000px height, it uses percent-based scaling with whatever percent gets it down to1000px height and calculates a proportional width. There is never any disproportionate resizing.
>>
>>144550238
thank you, this is quite interesting

2MB, 1342x2000px
>>144550626
Wrong. Here's an image scaled to 2000px height, where the original is 3016px height.

It's full of moire patterns. Meanwhile, >>144550074 is scale by 50% and has no moire patterns because the scaling is based on the scan's original dimensions. Other than the scaling, everything else is the same but the results are drastically different.
>>
>>144550513
I don't understand.
Like the other anon said, 1000px is a percentage of 1200px or whatever you have.
Are you meaning that it has to be an integer?
>>

constrain proportions.png
16KB, 443x358px
>>144550513
If you're only changing one value and the "Constrain Proportions" box is ticked, it'll scale it proportionately.

And if you can do math well enough to find out how much gutter you need to crop out, you can get nice neat numbers like this proportionately

Also, I'll admit digital raws are pretty new to me and not my strong suit, so I'll find a better method than in this guide
>>
>>144550831
So you scaled it to 66%, then. Looks to me like you just have a shit image resizing algorithm.
>>
>>144550913
If you're getting digital raws then just buy them from somewhere like ebookjapan and rip them yourself.
That way they will be perfect quality and all you will need to do is remove the text and maybe level slightly
>>
>>144550913
I had all of those options selected. Also, bicubic smoother is the superior method.

>And if you can do math well enough to find out how much gutter you need to crop out, you can get nice neat numbers like this proportionately
Or you can just scan all your shit at the same size, scale based on percentage and have a good scan.
>>
>>144551040
>That way they will be perfect quality
Ebookjapan still has artifacts if you rip it directly. Not as many, but still some.

The only thing I use digital raws for is JoJo since it's become a speed series. Otherwise I just buy/scan my own tankoubons

>>144551092
>Or you can just scan all your shit at the same size,
i thought i was the retard for a moment, but it turned out to be anon

Still gotta crop pages when you scan them, and that doesn't really have anything to do with digital raws anyway. These are my scans. For each series I do I put together an adjustable crop action that fits the size of the page and is proportionate to both the original page size and the intended completed size, without cropping out details and also without leaving in black borders

>>
>>144551324
Are you seriously so retarded that you can't scan your pages at the same DPI and use your scanner's edges to scan everything straight? What the fuck? I can crop all of my pages with a simple photoshop action because I do things the right way.
>>
>>144550831
That's because you scaled an indexed page and has nothing to do with percentage or pixel scaling.
You need to convert it to Grayscale or RGB first.

They are all the same DPI. Dunno why you're assuming otherwise. Having the bleed area helps me make sure it's perfectly straight. I use actions for cropping as well but leave them as adjustable so they're the same area. All I gotta do is rotate to make the panel borders straight. For me this takes just a few seconds per page and ensures better results

Try reaching out to /a/-affiliate scan groups. They'd be most likely to have good raws worth sharing and know not to let reddit in on it. An invite system could work, or just vet everyone personally and give them logins.

Unfortunately, I don't have a ripper, and I heard from jagman1x3 that Part 5 does actually keep going past 5.5, which is all in volume 4, it's just in some weird hiatus, maybe cause of Jump Giga starting, who knows.
>>
>>144555362
I really wish these sites stopped existing or at least they stopped using premium hosts. It seems like the only incentive to upload public raws these days is to make money.

I think more people would share if their raws weren't instantly re-uploaded on DDL sites by some greedy asshole. Ugcity has many Japanese who never post their raws outside the board (either for reasons mentioned above or because they want to keep a low profile) and whoever leaks gets banned.
>>
>>144556193
I looked at the announcement on Jump+, and on closer reading it specifies that the irregular serialization will start "with part 6" so presumably 5 has to be over by now. Giga's got nothing to do with it, the author isn't doing anything there as far as I know.
Also that's me.
>>
>>144556383

I don't mind them existing, it's nice to browse a gallery of raws. Wish they weren't behind premium hosts though. Well, there's always someone making money, I suppose.

At least Manga-Zip uses Sakurafile, which doesn't have any daily limits and is very fast.
>>
Question for redrawers: what's the average size in pixels of continuous regions that are redrawn? (e.g. 50 x 50 or 100 x 100) What's the largest area you've redrawn? The smallest?

(I'm asking since it's relevant to a program I'm writing.)
>>
>>144556781
There's no real way to measure the average, it's completely dependent on how long the line is and how big the text is. If it's small enough though, you can just cover it with your own text and not have to redraw it at all.

Nah, Madokami uses IRC for registrations, and that hasn't really done them any good. Webchat has made IRC a lot less exclusive.

SSH public key lines are short, single-line, and having one demonstrates a degree of technical proficency that is beyond most of the internet.

Is 4chan an irc channel? No. Madokami became open to many due to it being spoonfed all the time. That said, I believe it is still unknown to many in shit communities.
I think the integration of SSH key is also viable, however.

They can't read raws so it won't be an issue.

Take a look at /pol/, /sp/ or /int/ and see how many Hinomarus you can spot. Remember, the Japanese learn English in school.

Have you found what you're looking for?
>>
>>144554146
>Not really.
What are you on about? There are plenty of completed manga being scanlated, and even plenty of older completed stuff. Just today there've been new releases for hell Teacher Nube, Rokudenashi Blues, Cat's Eye, and Survival.

What do you guys think of chinks raw?
>>
>>144573776
By chink raws you mean chink scanlation, right? They're visually better than MS but that's not saying much.
>>
>>144574730
That too but I'm mainly talking about the raw posted by them

Don't use them.
>>
>>144575177
The only time I saw a good raw from a chink it came from a chink friend. Any other public chink raws I've seen were very, very, very bad, with contrasts burned and gigantic watermarks. If good chink raws exist they are buried deep under secret chink clubs where you must be in fact chinese to get in.
>>
>>144573776
Only scans of official chink releases are good. Everything else are usually garbage.

>they are buried deep under secret chink clubs
Probably, but then again, I don't think they care about quality anyway since the scanlated releases tend to be terrible even when you download directly from their forum/sites. So even if they do have good scans, it's wasted on them anyway.
