So far I'm pretty disappointed with the anime. I've only read the manga so I don't know how things happen in the LN, but it seems to me the anime is more interested in checking off plot points than being an interesting show. First three episodes don't have much military action. Only a brief action scene in episode 2. Next episode should have a mock battle, but I don't have very high hopes that it will be very exciting. Probably won't see another battle until episode 6, but things get more serious by then so it may be good.

Military culture isn't overtly expressed in the show. It's a military story with characters in the military, but the military aspects feel more like a backdrop than one of the driving forces of the story.

It's slightly prettier than most LN adaptions, the MC is slightly more interesting than most LN protags, the setting is slightly more interesting than future/modern Japanese high school, and the themes of war and politics might be more interesting than most LNs if those are actually going to be themes instead of flavors.

It's something where all that was needed was an editor to go, "Ok, now let's remove all the unnecessary genre trappings in order to establish a unique tone and tie that to the MC's story." The problem is that the story forces everyone around him to be dumber in order for the MC to appear brilliant. Take the scene on the boat in the first episode, MC is being largely amusing but then whips out his ultra-cool military genius and totally shows up everyone else in the room with his incomparable brilliance, but nothing he is saying is remotely unique or interesting. It's just "strategy 101" but because its delivered from the mouth of the MC, you're supposed to be awed or something.

I enjoy the character when he's being a bit of a cad and obviously there wouldn't be much of a story if he were without talent, but the specifics of how his brilliance is written is boilerplate LN bullshit.

When he interacts with other characters he does as much as possible to be seen as a lazy big mouth faggot. But we "readers" know how talented and good he is in reality.

So the problem is characters in the series see him as a dick but we are suposed to emphatize with him because we know his true nature, and we have to root for him because he is missunderstood by eberyone. But is difficult to root for him when you see he is actually being a jerk with the other characters so seeing the other characters hate him feels the normal thing and you end emphatizing more with everyone else than with the MC.

Don't think so. What the anime is lacking is the overall picture of his character as someone guided by Science, being ultimately forced into this by red hair and latter by the princess.

It's not about his true nature, but his circumstances. It's not like he is talented, he thinks properly. The laziness is also a trait and not a disguise.

Focusing only in his character is losing a lot of what Alderamin is, and what the real conflict is in place here. While we see him as a genius in strategic, he is on the bad side of the war. He is with friends that also carry a lot of family problems. If anything, you are supposed to feel empathy for the other characters that seem more human with more obvious problems. You are supposed to feel sad for the other soldiers that were killed while offering a helping hand in the episode 2, and then the other enemies that will appear.

- Lose without annihilating the Empire's military, and use said military to keep the opposing nations at bay, preventing them from interfering with the revolution that the Princess desires. At the same time, entice the military to support the Princess' revolution, and bring about a better government for the people and military.

The reason the Princess cannot order the others is that Yatori and her family are extremely loyal to the Empire, and the others excluding Haro are also members of noble families loyal to the Empire. Haro isn't a master strategist like Ikta, so she's also out of the picture.

Ikta decides to go with it, since letting the Empire burn isn't half-bad; as long as it's a controlled burn.

The Empire is almost like Imperial Japan; zealous towards their Emperor. They believe his words are that of God. It would require a special kind of loss that would force the people to wake up and see the truth. In this case, Ikta is the one to nuke the country himself. How they'll do it I'm not sure though, since the other key part is keeping the military sufficiently intact to make other nations pause.

Be aware that the Republic has been encouraging immigration of Imperial citizens due to the stagnation of the Empire and its policies favoring the wealthy and demanding blind fanaticism. My guess is that the plan assumes that the people will see the Emperor abusing their only "ray of hope" against the encroaching nations and begin to swing their loyalty to him instead. More notable with the fact that Ikta doesn't take stupid bullshit, and shows fairness where concerned. As well, the Princess outright stated that the Emperor had been casually using up valuable individuals further contributing to the weakening of the Empire. Heck, promoting Ikta and co was to try and make new heroes for the public to believe in, right after the previous hero, that one general, died trying to "defend" the northern territories.

The school that Yakitori and Ikta attended before the boat ride was just a high school of sorts, you take the test if you want a command/officer position but if you just want to join the military, there is no test as long as you are physically able bodied. So you could take the test but then not enroll in boot camp if you so choose.

Normal soldiers start out as a Private and max attainable rank is Sergeant Major.
