Dragon Ball, Macross, and Hokuto no Ken get discussed now and again, but no anime gets the attention like Evangelion does. Like it or not, Evangelion was a giant leap forward in the anime medium. Want a contemporary, contrasting example? Look up Brain Powrd, Sunrise's attempt at riding the Evangelion wave. It's a horrible mess, in part because it looks like old-school anime instead of the more modern design Evangelion used.
