The author has got to eat. And I am sure her publisher would be hoping that KyoAni would pay for the animation rights a 2nd time. At best the existing books only last for 2 more cour. If KyoAni see a demand then the author is there to deliver.

KyoAni doesn't want to end franchises. Frankly they are the most reliable source of sequels in recent memory. They only really stop a franchise when the money dries up. They just haven't found a good source of stories they could milk long term, which they could have partial ownership of. Eupho is the closest that they have gotten to.

KyoAni is always surprising people with small details like this though, plus they were in constant talks with the author about the setting and characters, which is how one of their named anime characters ended up in vol 4. I wouldn't be surprised if Takeda let them know she was planning more material the character designs just weren't finalized so they didn't make it into the anime on time.

This spinoff series is parallel to volume 2 and 3 (it'll be two volumes long).

It's also sort of a tie-in to the anime, if you remember at the last episode of s1 there were all these shots of sad Azusa. In volume 2 of the novels there was this Azusa subplot that never got resolved onscreen where it seemed like Azusa might be quitting but by volume 3 she's actually pretty cheery again. I'm guessing they were saving that plot for the spinoff series.

Volumes 2 and 3 of the novels were able to be written after the anime got greenlit, so there's going to be influences from both sides. There's an amusingly huge error in volume 3 that accidentally references something that happened only in the anime and not in the novel for example.

Anyway I'm just happy for more Hibike and maybe marginal amounts of Kumiko. Maybe season 2 will animate parts from both series.
