Overall, yes. At the very least, watch the first 7 episodes to see if it's your thing, then if it is, watch up to 51 after that for sure.

For 52 - 99, I recommend it to be binge-watched once you hit its tournament arc due to its slower pace (In blocks of 65 - 75/76 - 85/86 - 99 or about 5 eps at a time if you can't handle that much at once.), same with the mini-arc right after that (100 - 112), which by then you should be more or less caught up to what's airing currently. As >>144484423 puts it, the quality kinda dips at that point and again near the end of that aforementioned mini-arc. However, I am optimistic in hoping that the current arc we're in will pick itself back up from all of that soon.

So far in terms of Yugioh spin-offs, ARC-V has the LEAST amount of filler with only 2 episodes that can be considered a hard skippable (19 and 20) with the rest having plot, character development, or setting building of importance, no matter how minute. So I'm watching the original Yu-Gi-Oh series for the first and I'm liking it so far, so I plan on finishing it, but I'm wondering if it's worth it to watch the spinoffs when I'm done. I'm enjoying the first show because of the character development and duels, so I'm interested if the spinoffs maintain this quality or not. Should I watch some of the spinoffs and avoid others? They don't. GX is littered with messy duels and character handling. 5D's shafted everyone in favor of the protagoinst and his card shilling buddy, Zexal is okay but not for the main characters and Arc-V is a load of wasted potencal. If you ask me, Zexal was the only spin off series to somewhat hold it's own with the original so if you have to watch one from start to finish, watch that one and ignore GX and 5D's.

5D's first 64 episodes are really good and worth a watch. The rest (a post script season) is however flawed, mostly because of fillers. It still has some of the finest moments of this franchise, though.

I don't really think any of the other series come together quite as well as the original, but yeah they're worth watching. They each have their own merits. GX's first two seasons are littered with a lot of filler, but they set up the show well enough and the filler episodes aren't all unenjoyable. As a matter of fact I wouldn't call the plot-light episodes "filler" so much as they're "down time", which is sensible in retrospect. The third and fourth seasons are sublime because then the plot gets more consistent and while season four's plot is a little crazy, it's fun to watch and serves as a platform for the conclusion of everyone's different character arcs. GX's character work is its strongest point.

5Ds is hype as hell. I think everything from its start to the end of the Fortune Cup is the pinnacle of Yu-Gi-Oh! and while there's a steady decline over the course of the next arc and subsequent story lines, they're not necessarily bad. You'll have fun with 5Ds.

ZEXAL is a similar case of being exciting as fuck, but it's one of the more polarizing series. Personally, I enjoy Yuma and Astral, but most of the main characters outside of Yuma's group of school friends are super enjoyable too, and generally have more allure to them than Yuma and Astral (to most folk anyway). It's got a pretty good OST, two decently strong storylines, beautiful art pieces (ZEXAL's designs are amazing) and nice characters. You should watch it, and if you do, I hope you have fun with it.

Arc-V is good. It doesn't really feel like a Yu-Gi-Oh! to me, but that's just my personal bias. I feel like it has an enormous drop in quality after Reiji and Yuya's second duel. And to me, it still hasn't recovered. But you might enjoy it. Like ZEXAL it has some really good designs for both its characters and its monsters, but for all of that most of the Duels are only decent.

I honestly think the production staff became lazier when they knew they had a hit after the first bulk of Arc-V. But I might be uninformed. I'm still under the impression shows aren't written to completion episode by episode before release to the public, but I've done no following up on this.

Wow, thanks for the in-depth response. I think I will give them all a try, the reason I asked is because I've seen so much shit get flung at every yu-gi-oh spinoff that it worried me. Honestly though as long as there's decent duels and an okay plot to support them it's fine by me. It was partially that, and partially a poor job on part of the writers. However, there's something to be said about how people took Arc-V. It was good early on but it still had its flaws. The series was refreshing and unique in the way it handled its narrative and characters and while that was a good thing, people took that to mean it was going to be a gem. They were salivating over it without realizing that there was still a long way to go. This general is partially at fault for allowing the hype to go to its head.

Mostly the freshness it had in its early episodes raised expectations too much that the Synchro and XYZ couldn't match them. Mokuba values his brother's happiness above all else. His biggest wish was to see his brother smile again like when they were kids in the orphanage. Gozaburo fucked all that up by instilling horrible values into Kaiba which changed him. Even after Atem mind crushed him he never truly got over a lot of his personal issues as he still doubted the power of teamwork and friendship and he could never accept Atem as a better duelist always wanting to rematch him. Over time he realized Atem was the only one who really understood him since they had fought each other so many times so he started to view him as a kindred spirit to enact his rivalry with. Transcending dimensions and continuing his battles with Atem is literally the only way Kaiba can learn to let go and be at peace with himself. It's his "treatment" in a medical sense. The whole permanently dying part isn't explicitly stated but its implied; however, I'm not sure if there is absolutely no way he could come back to his own dimension.

Despite all the kidnappings Mokuba is a very competent person for his age. When Seto was in a coma he enacted a plan to save KaibaCorp from Pegasus taking over. He was the commissioner of Battle City overseeing all duels and making sure there was no foul play. He was in charge of the puzzle excavation project. I'm sure he has numerous other responsibilities that Seto has entrusted him with despite being only 12 years old. He's proven himself to be a very capable and responsible person. So taking care of himself isn't really an issue.

While that is valid, Mokuba isn't emotionally weak. He's lost too much in his life as it is and that has made him stronger. He wasn't just idly sitting by when his brother was in a vegetative state crying, he was trying to do something to remedy the situation. That just shows how mentally and emotionally tough he is. Sure, Kaiba has left him, but he does promise he will come back so Mokuba is probably holding on to that hope that he will be able to see Kaiba again. Mokuba is also in control of KC now so he can't afford to lose focus by crying over his big brother. His esteemed older brother has trusted him with the biggest responsibility of his life showing how highly he thinks of Mokuba.

So yes, while his brother's departure may hurt at first I don't think it will completely overwhelm Mokuba. His resolve is as strong as ever now as he must protect the kingdom his brother left to him as he awaits his return one day.

Please don't compare Arc-V to GX as if GX is the worse of the two. GX shifted the overarching big bad every season, yes, but it was still more enjoyable than Arc-V and felt ten times more genuine. It did foreshadowing better, it addressed important plot points better, it fleshed out its cast and developed its protagonist much better. Every big bad looked threatening, from Saiou, to Viper, to Yubel, to fucking Trueman and Darkness' incompetence was even pointed out by Yubel, so it was intentional. With that being said, even the incompetent Darkness had basically absorbed every living thing on the fucking planet with the exception of Judai. He was a serious threat. GX was so much better than Arc-V. It had its own style and it wasn't nearly as pretentious as the shitshlock we get every week is. Hell, it even nostalgia'd better.

Yeah I agree with what you're saying but I guess it just comes down to a matter of opinion. I'm personally fine with Mokuba being on own or Seto being with him but I'm just trying to justify the former since it is the outcome Kaz decided to choose. It is realistic in the sense that there are many young kids in this world we live in who don't have any family and are forced to fend for themselves. It's not ideal but it's a reality.

Furthermore, Seto has always had a reckless side to him. This whole movie is about him having a mental breakdown and being unable to move on with his life. I kind of like the idea that even by the end of the movie he truly hasn't gotten over his "mental disease" and thus seeing Atem will give him the "treatment" he needs. I honestly don't know how he would act if he chose to not dimension hop and stay with Mokuba. Perhaps he would improve or he could just cycle back into being a crazy maniac. I realize that he acknowledges Yugi at the end of the movie but he and Yugi were never really that close, it was always Atem who faced off with him. Seeing Atem again is just something he has to do. You may not necessarily agree with it and I'm sure many people have qualms with that kind of ending, but it does make sense with Seto's character and thus is a valid outcome.

It's a 2 hour movie and given how much shit Kaz put into it they can't afford long drawn out duels.

I kind of like it as it makes you think more about what they're doing each turn rather than just listen to them saying the card's effect because the movie expects you to know the effects ala movie pack.

It also seems like more of a "duel" in the sense that they're almost fighting each other. They're just at each other's throats, countering one thing after the other. I especially love the Yugi vs Kaiba clip that leaked and how the idea of a boss monster you can sit on doesn't exist.

Chaos Max gets fucked by Magi Girls which in turn brings out Deep-Eyes screwing them over only to get fucked by Gandora X but Deep-Eyes nukes the whole field too leaving both duelists at a stalemate. It's exhilarating as fuck and I wish this happened more in the TV anime.

Well in Kaiba's defense right after he summons Chaos MAX he pretty much says "this farce of a duel is now over!". Yugi then responds by saying he will not lose which basically pisses Kaiba off and he gets reckless and attacks the Magician Girl with Chaos MAX.

Also, like the original manga I don't know if there's an actual way to read your opponent's card effects.

Furthermore, Kaz was always about being able to take down seemingly powerful monsters in duels and that there is no true boss monster you can always hide behind.

As far as the real game goes, Chaos MAX is no joke. It can end games in a snap. The problem is getting him out quickly is a bit hard because of the Chaos Form ritual spell not listing the exact name so you can't use Pre-Prep, and that makes Chaos MAX decks inconsistent but they have topped a decent number of times in the OCG and I'm sure some will top here in TCG.

If you can get it out very early it's really good though. I agree it's not as effective in the late game. But because the consistency is not there it's not worth risking a weak start which is why it's not seen much in competitive play. I can't believe BLS are getting more support. How about a fusion monster this time? No? How about some level 4's that aren't gaia monsters and 2 xyz monsters? 1 rank 4 and 1 rank 8 should be good enough, Buster Bladers need 2 synchros, Buster Dragoon is fine the way he is but Buster Dragon sucks and with how easy it is to bring back the tuners a level 10 or 12 is needed.

Magician Girls need at least 2 more magicians, perferable Orange and Banana as well as a level 6 Magician girl to make Rank 6 plays possible. perhaps the Banana Magician Girl's effect forces your opponent to attack position and battle every turn and the Orange Magician Girl's effect is to bring back a spellcaster every turn from the grave.

The first season was fresh and full of so much cute. All of the interactions were memorable, even with sidecharacters, and you'll be missing them once the plot actually starts. The first few episodes were a little cringey, but that's just Yuuya on his own. Definitely skip 19-20, they're totally irrelevant and nofun, but I'd highly recommend season 1. New shadowy characters every week, crazy hype, lots of blushing and shoujo elements.

The show starts to fall over itself once dimensional travel is established and the cast is regularly separated. I only got through the start of season 2 on a binge, and am not sure I could really watch it again. I'm only really watching it for closure.

I thought the way Dennis carded himself was pretty cool, and I'm not just saying that as an edgefag who can only get it up when this show engages the SUFFERING. I think it was a good culmination of the aspects of his character that we've seen and at the very least isn't the usual "one loss, convert to EGAO" that has been grating on viewers' nerves lately.

Yes, Xyz was rushed. All its plots were resolved too quickly, and the villains' conversion felt forced. But we've still got - what - thirty episodes left at least? The entire MCS fit in less episodes than that. I'm still excited to see where this goes and believe the show can still 'wow' us. Especially because there are still answers left to questions first posed in the so-called "good part" of the show. I still wanna see those answered.

Dennis' exit was better than another conversion, but it's a low fucking bar considering how those have been handled recently. It would have also had a lot more meaning if he dueled someone he had a previously established relationship with and/or had more screentime to flesh him out and let the audience care about him. In all seriousness you can see the two worlds of Arc-V in Dennis's suicide. Dennis's death was great and tasteful, but whenever he talks to Kaito or Asuka he doesn't make any fucking sense

I like to go back and read everyone's reactions to the stream after I watch Mono later in the week, and then I post every now and then until the new episode comes out and then bail again until the new subs come out to avoid spoilers.

Had a lot of fun in these threads. But I gotta say, even the doldrums of Synchro's slower parts didn't have the utter dreariness that hangs over /a/rc-v nowadays. There's less crazy 'DEEPEST LORE' theories, less cute fan-art and Pixiv comics being posted, less joking around over the characters, it's just a bunch of bitterness. Yuya needs to start struggling again is the problem. Yeah, he grew to be the king of Synchro now, but it doesn't feel like there are stakes in his duels anymore and he converts everyone way too easily.

I'm not asking for him to outright fail again like he did in Yuya vs. Kachidoki I, but the way Gloria, clock guy, and the goons all immediately kowtowed after his victory against Edo felt fake. Grace was believable, Edo was... bitchy but I could gel with it, and even Kachidoki the second time was at least a more subdued "alright, so I don't hate you anymore" than outright "SUGOI, ENTAME DYUERU DA", but Yuya is falling into the Yusei trap. He's getting TOO good.

No, people enjoy it; these threads wouldn't exist if people didn't. Hell, I enjoyed everything aside XYZ's climax. But, a lot of people are rightfully annoyed that characters are getting shafted so hard to push kaito and other nostalgia bullshit currently since a lot of the wonderful characters Arc-V has are thrown to the side as a result.

The plot dragging its feet also pisses people off.

No way. Synchro was much better than Xyz in every possible way. Just like Standard was much better than Synchro. Fusion has gotten off to a bad start with the only interesting thing being Dennis carding himself but it wasn't well done enough to make it a very moving scene.

No it's not. Filler episodes, Arc-V characters losing and being written out by a legacy character, the antagonists all crumble before the Sayaki Egao sue that Yuya's become and the duels have been Zexal and GX level of boring. Yuya has several other cards like the odd eyes and magicians yet It's Preformapal all day every day.

I have to admit it really bothers me how Dennis was treated. I don't even care for him as a character much but he has a lot of potential.

For one thing he's one of the few characters in the show to use multiple summoning methods and he's an antagonist who has the same power as the main protagonist.

Shouldn't Academia being able to study his Pendulum cards and potentially reproduce them like Reiji did be a thing? What does Academia even think about Pendulum?

I feel like there's so much that could have been done there that wasn't because Dennis was never an important character in the first place.

Here's the thing. Standard started 'eh' but got stronger as it went on. Synchro was a slog at first but once it picked up the pace it was dishing out hype left and right. So ARC-V possibly had a model of "each season is a homage to a past series and starts slow to set things up properly before building up momentum and resolving things in a spectacular fashion", and I would have been fine with that.

But Xyz and Fusion have to share the final year together, and I really wish they had just let the show go on for an extra year so we had time to give both of those arcs justice. Xyz was pretty much just "here's these characters things are pretty bad okay but yuya showed up and they're happy now bye." Fusion? I have faith that we'll see more hype before the show ends since it has a bigger portion of S3 than Xyz, but it feels like Konami wants to rush ARC-V to its end for some reason.
