He's kinda a hypocrite, yes.
When he got the opportunity to block out hearing thoughts all the time so that he can finally watch movies without being spoiled, he actually got so unnerved to not being able to hear all the thoughts all the time, fearing that any person in the streets might flip out and try to kill him.

He's a guy who complains all the time and thinks that the grass is greener on the other side, but then finds out that it's not.
