Orochimaru always found ways to survive. He even became a snake Itachi had to burn after sealing him away. Then his cells tried to take over Kabuto so he was still alive even as that before controlling them.

Despite Ichigo better understanding his powers now, nothing he's shown in his "True" form comes close to the raw power seen on display in his final fight against Aizen. He vaporized a mountain with a casual swipe, shattered a space-time distorting spell field with a gesture, and tanked what looked like a damn-near nuclear-tier blast with just an arm, and only received some cosmetic burns and clothing damage.

Theoretically, now that he fully understands himself, his "Potential" is now higher than it was then...but shit's ending, so we'll never see such a thing.

A lot of Orochimaru's appeal is retroactive I feel. Most/all of Naruto's major villains later in the story had utopian motivations, so to have a major villain who was motivated purely by self interest became refreshing. That and the fact that he was present in what most agree was when the series was at its peak.

That was just a backdrop. His motivation was something that came out of his unique understanding of the world, and the soul king, and the possibilities and the alternatives, and his own over-inflated ego. But he never explained it.

SS assumed that Aizen wanted ot kill the soul King because they found traces of his reatsu in the archives showing that the only document he was researching other than the Hogyouku was the creation of the Ouken. But when it comes to Aizen, that sounds like a bit of an evidence-orgy, doesn't it?

The fun thing about Aizen is that just like how he never referred to Kyouka Suigetsu as his Shikai, he never personally talked about his plans either.

Kubo gives the readers a lot of second-hand assumptions as exposition.

Nonitra, Szayel, Ulquiorra, Ywach and Aizen were blatantly villains and there's nothing about either of them that makes them understandable. Funny thing is that every villain and Naruto get a flashback or at least some form of retrospective that shows where they started, what motivated them to follow their path and whether they regretted it or not before they die. Kisame is a great example of this because up until the end he was a true ninja carrying out his duty regardless of the intent of the supplier since that's how he lived his life meanwhile there's nothing about Aizen's motivation that makes him understandable since the manga makes him out to just being bored.

I think it depends. I think Ginjo and Byakuya were fantastic antagonists. Rivals like Grimmjow and Ulquiorra were so-so.

I like almost everything about Aizen except the way he was written. How he's drawn, how he talks, the sheer amount of power and personality he has over any given scene. He's generally just amazing, aesthetically speaking. Unfortunately almost everything about how he was written is just terrible.

Yhwach had a great premise; an actual motivation. He was to keep fighting and waging war so he won't go back to his crippled self. It wasn't all that well executed though, and he might just be worse than Aizen with how utterly broken he is.

So yeah, I think Kubo can write some good antagonists on occasion. He just sucks at making the big bads.

Aside from Nnoitra who I would agree was one of Kubo's better written villains, I feel like you're overselling a lot of those characters. Gin was just "mysterious jokester traitor character" until we actually found out his motivation which didn't make much sense. Ulquiorra is a pretty standard "doesn't understand human emotion" villain. Yhwach is especially terrible because his motivations change so frequently he arguably doesn't have one. He is barely a character in my eyes.

Speaking generally, the advantage Kubo has over Kishi I think is that he's able to add a lot of facets to his characters' personalities to make them feel more human, whereas Kishi just picks a few defining traits for his characters that completely define them.

Ginjo is like an almost good character, I feel. His role as a proto-Ichigo was very interesting and his feelings of betrayal due to being spied upon were also good but it was never really clear to me why he and his gang were so intent on punking Ichigo other than just being obligatory antagonists. And then he died straight after, so any potential that had been built up was squandered.

Then again maybe I'm misremembering, the way that arc ended was so abrupt it's still a blur to me.

Harribel is actually another example of why Aizen is terribly written. First thing he does after escaping the flame prison is cut her down despite there being no logical reason to do this other than show off how evil and uncaring he is and because killing off minions is something villains are supposed to do. And he ends up basically soloing all the captains anyway making the whole process of amassing an arracar army meaningless. He may as well have just taken on everyone back in SS and saved us all hundreds of chapters.

Renji, who was actually Ichigo who was actually Aizen got seriously wounded. While Aizen who was actually Renji took Yhwach's attack head on and is probably dead. Meanwhile Ichigo stabs Yhwach through the back and getsuga tenshous his entire upper body away.
