That's kind of scary.

I decided to come back to these threads after a few months, is /djt/ finally dying?

>>
>>144421328

Sort of. We've had fewer beginners coming in recently and they really are the lifeblood of the thread. I think there were a lot of NYRfriends at the start of the year, I remember a bunch of people talking about their journey through Core2k a few months ago but they've mostly slowly died down. As more people increase in proficiency the less they need to lean on DJT for occasional help, and the more time they spend just reading on their own.

To all my intermediate homodachis: one way to help this is to come to DJT not just to ask questions, but to share what you're reading and how and why you like it! Sharing is caring!

Today I read a whole chapter of Nanatsuiro Drops from start to finish! It took about five hours. The final character count was around 34k. If we estimate 4 Japanese characters as equaling one English word, that gives me an estimated English WPM of around 30, so around 1/8th of my standard English reading speed. This is my first non-Hanahira VN but I can already tell I'm improving in comprehension and speed greatly. I fell for the "read more" meme and it's working, I recommend that anon tries it too!

Now onto chapter 6.

I just finished the JCAT. I think it took me around 2 hours, The first hour was just the listening and it was completely depressing.

On the one hand, the score is satisfying, but on the other hand I felt completely lost during the entire test. I did not truly understand even a single listening question, most of the grammar and vocab questions were guessing, and most of the reading was filled with words I had never seen before. I feel like I know nothing.

猫は今日図書館へ行った

So in this sentence, why does 今日 sit right next to 図書館? I guess I really have no idea what I'm getting at, but it feels weird that there isn't some sort of particle to separate the two, but I've so far not read why a sentence should be structured this way. It's literally TODAY LIBRARY.

Should I think of the sentence as two units, like 猫は今日 図書館へ行った?
>>
>>144428326
I scored lower since I couldn't read kanji without furigana, but finished within 30 minutes - I didn't even know you could take two hours for the test.

Anyways most of the people ITT just guess the meaning, and assume that's comprehension. There's no real sense of actual comprehension until N2/N1 level - anything before and you should just be satisfied if you can understand the gist, as annoyingly frustrating as that is.
>>
>>144428949
its ok you woulda scored 200 something at best just keep studying and dont worry about standardized tests if you dont need the certification

>>
>>144429037
Particles can sometimes be dropped when it is clear what they should be. Your intuition that a particle is "missing" is actually correct, but the sentence isn't wrong because of it.

Thanks a ton. I'm not sure what you mean by manga names... I was thinking "The town where I live", guess I need to start actually thinking in Japanese more...

Also, was I supposed to use 誰でも? Or was I wrong to use が? I read that が is used when the topic of the sentence is "new" to the conversation. I suppose that's wrong?

Thanks again in advance.
>>
>>144429155
Pretty much zero with regards to language skills. I had no discipline or self-control, so I had to build up that first. Started with a rule of at least 5 minutes of study a day, but built up to 3-4 hours after a few months.

About the 俺のいる町 thing, 君のいる町 is the manga I was referring to.

As I said, it's not grammatically wrong, but it doesn't feel like a natural thing to say, unless you want to express the specific nuance it has.

Consider that rverything you actually say/write will seem relevant to readers/listeners. After all, it's what you chose to say/write and not a different way. Especially in cases where an easy obvious way exist (俺の町) and you choose something different (俺のいる町).

There the nuance is that only thing that matters about said city is that you are in it. That just sounds weird in a normal sentence, especially when you mention other people from the city next. (If might work in a name of a romance manga though.)

Am I correct in assuming the amount of weebs are declining?

My 16 year old younger sister's friends all talk about how cool Korea is and how they want to learn Korean.

I remember back in my day that that was exactly the same but with Japanese.

Then why does every Redditor act like they can read anything immediately? (Using machine translation for vocabulary.)

Are these people simply clueless weeaboos that can understand few simple phrases, this gets to their heads and they act like they can understand anythything when in reality they just look up verbs and nouns and make up shit based on their first listed meaning in the dictionary?

There's little point even trying to learn how to read full paragraphs before you have a good 2.5k words under your belt; before that, you should focus on speaking, since short sentences are more natural and rewarding. I sense a beginner that learned some basic grammar forms and thinks he knows everything.

What an I talking about are cases where Japanese's reliance on contextuality rears its head and the sentence is hard to understand unless you actually understand it perfectly, without having to look up something, especially in shitty English distictionaries that in no way account for cases where concepts don't match between the two languages.

But I guess whatever makes you feel safer about your lack of understanding, sucker.

>>144438657
I love Japan, the country in itself is nice - scenery, landscapes, the contrast between Okinaga and Hokkaido. The people are interesting too; harsh to outsiders in a way and xenophobic, but hard working and creative. And of course, the media. All my favorite hobbies are created by the Japanese.

Japan is good, it's sugoi, it's banzai and just COOL in general. I love it and I'm not even sarcastic in any way. My life would be much worse off if that titty bitty island didn't exist.
>>
>>144438657
I'm actually enjoying myself much more than before I started learning, I even don't want to kill myself anymore. Anime is more fun to watch, games are more fun to play, porn is more arousing in Japanese.
I'm afraid that fresh feeling is going to dull as I get used to it more, though, no idea what I would have to do next to keep myself going.
Probably learn programming or some shit.
>>
>>144438614
Reading is the best thing you can do, other than that just looking up grammar explanations on google, or looking at example sentences that use said grammar, and trying to get as good a grasp of it as possible is your best bet

Maybe. But isn't reading the same? The mistranslation still happens in your head, you just don't share it with the world.

And well, I'd say the meaning was partially captured by the original translation, they just have to accommodate new discoveries.
Using your hints I can already, for instance, notice the "mountain" mentioned is a mountain of books.

I'll add these to the Pad anyway, thank you.

Perhaps by "I don't want to be mean" you meant you actually wanted to, but since I didn't get unreasonably upset you are trying other methods of turning this into a fight?

I don't understand this exchange, someone explain/translate it please.

>男の子は行動しないといけないから大変だね
[Guy][Action][Have to] Is what I think I understood, but the から大変 doesn't make sense to me. If a guy has to take action it's bad?

And then he asks, isn't waiting bad, to which she answers yes, that's why you shouldn't take action quickly which doesn't make sense.

I probably misunderstood something big here so please educate me

They can just do nothing and wait.

It isn't that hard to pass, but if you want to actually get almost every question right and understand the full passages, then you have to actually know Japanese. The listening is much clearer than real people and such, but not really easier than NHK news segments about somewhat familiar topics. The reading sections though are taken from real editorials and essays and forms and such, so if you can understand everything then yeah you are proficient at reading.

Lets discuss the nuances and experiences of learning Japanse, while not being an native english speaker.

>some words hit the nuance better than english words can

I don't really get a lot of mileage out of it. If studying English and Japanese has taught me anything it's just that German is unnecessarily complex and has surprisingly few words.

>>

Also feel free to suggest better things that have hundreds of episodes. If you want to get good it's more important to watch a lot than to watch "good" stuff, which means I would have to either put too much effort into choosing what to watch or I would have to watch almost everything in a season, and doing the latter would involve shows much worse than one piece.
>>
>>144439389
But they did understand everything because they are simply better than you. Is this so hard to get? They are superior to you. The End

It's objectively a waste of time to spend time on cards that are being burned out instead of putting them off until they're not burned out or doing them outside of SRS.
>>
>>144446628
This is normal.

To commit to memory, you need to provide "links", that is, something that link to that memory.

You see a card, you "save" that into memory, it has one link: "I saw a card today".
When you get it wrong so many times: "I saw a card today." + "The card I got it wrong so many times"
The stronger the link, the stronger the memory.

A good way to strengthen the memory is to provide/generate more links, for example, recently I got this card: 機

At first I was "wtf is this? It doesn't look like anything like an airplane."
A few cards later I got 機関 and I immediately remembered Steins;Gate MC crazy talk "the organization is after me bla bla bla"

Never again I forgot that card even though it was my first time ever seeing it.

tl;dr: generate links to content you know, try to find pictures in the kanji, try to relate with other memories you have (anime, manga, etc), it'll strengthen your memory of it and it'll be much easier to remember.

Koreans are stupidly hard workers and their society is deeply rooted in collectivist neo-Confucianism. It is about as polar opposite to American culture as you can possibly get.

The total vagueness of most Japanese words always trips me up. It's often hard for me to understand what they're getting at or what's really being said, even with Rikai and a dictionary.

>>144451840
Perhaps use a J>J dictionary like http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/ if you can?

The problem with vagueness often stems from English definitions just not being very good

You shouldn't take more than 90 minutes for 250 reviews, and that's already in the upper bounds. Only go over the example sentences when seeing a card for the first time and press again if you don't recall a word right away.
>>
>>144452905
After you start learning grammar/vocab. Use reading material to get better at grammar/recognizing vocabulary while learning new words relevant to the subject matter. This is why people recommend Yotsuba; it's about every day life so there's a lot of useful phrases and words.
