Ryuko is a sweet girl whose had to go through some angst because of her circumstance. Through her development in the show she is able to get over her self-loathing and be her sweet self.

I think for one its perpetuated by the english voice acting that she's a "badass bitch" (though I disagree too). But her fans that post with her as an avatar all tend to seem edgy. This is a case where its not the character but the fans. Like how Sonic himself isn't autistic but his fans are.

Just tell me, what edgy qualities does Ryuko have? Like holy shit, she doesn't even fucking go around killing people. Yeah, she wanted to kill the person that killed her father, but the people she fights? She ust mainly strips them of their clothing. She only killed her mother, but she COMPLETELY lost her humanity at that point, so she couldn't even be called a true kill.

She isn't completely dark and brooding and emo-ish. Yes, she had a downer arc for a while after finding out that she's part life fiber, but she wasn't like that for the rest of the series. Her attitude is actually generally more upbeat than Shadow's was.

She wanted revenge, but could you blame her??? Someone killed her father. Most normal people take revenge on those who HURT their goddamn family members. Ever heard about a guy who was okay with their daughter getting killed or raped?

What's funny is that Nui is easily more edgy than Ryuko, yet because of her cutesy design, she is easily overlooked, and Ryuko is treated as the edgy one. People just think, "She reminds me of Shadow, so she's definitely edgy".

From my analysis, Ryuko is only about as "edgy" as Yusuke Urameshi. I really think it's her character design which pushes people into believing that she's edgy.

Me neither. If you want an explanation for why it exists, OP, it's because Kill la Kill was extremely popular with /v/ermin. And since /v/ermin are the trash of society, they were 99.9% Shitsukifags, and since they couldn't handle the fact that Shitsuki is so shit compared to Ryuko (especially after it was revealed they are related), they constantly flung their shit at Ryuko.

That being said, because her rebellious nature was so colored by vengeance and her disgruntled/angry/bitchy attitude for the majority of the series, there's legitimacy in calling her edgy. There's also the whole "fuck the system" angle what with her rejection of Satsuki's fascist regime and her flippant attitude towards those in power.

On a final note, her being edgy isn't a bad thing. It's completely justified in context and she works very well as a protagonist in the show. Furthermore, it's only a part of her character, which provides a nice contrast to her lonely but kindhearted nature. They're not mutually exclusive.
