recently the manga about a teenage guy and girl that solve mysteries revolving the island they live in

I think kid is able to predict near death and death

It was interesting until the final chapter left in a huge cliffhanger with the bad kids talking to head honcho guy warning the head honcho about the teenage detectives

The final page was the author apologizing to the readers because he has a illness and won't be returning for a while , nearly two or so years pass and he passed away without ever giving the readers a single update

To this day I don't know if he had cancer but the manga was good and I'm severely disappointed we will never get a at least rushed ending

It's Korean, but damn what a shitty ending. The first 2 or 3 volumes were a pretty cool Hellsing ripoff, and then suddenly they throw away the entire plot up until that point and it veers off into propaganda about Japanese war crimes against Koreans, complete with mini history lesson epilogue encouraging readers to "uncover the truth" and absolutely nothing from the first half gets resolved or explained.

Sun Ken Rock. It was actually entertaining until the last few chapters where absolute bullshit character assassination happened out of nowhere. And that bullshit "ending" just made it worse. It felt the author let something in his personal life affect his work.

The actual ending to shaman king shat on the series. It's incredulous cynical where even though they talked Hao off of his ledge, he is still right about humans. and the next shaman fight will probably have significantly less people because the idea of spiritualism in modern society is dying off. Very few people actually come to a satisfactory conclusion to their story lines. With flowers even though it started off really bad and revise a lot of things that didn't need to be touched it was getting better.
>>
>>144362079
There was not!
Was just an excuse by the author.
>>144362994
Still so fucking mad!
Right after they implied that his wife is still alive and actually a holy knight/hero out to kill him.
We finally reached the point of background story and main plotline being revealed.
>>
>>144360016
Ratman was okay, but the final villain was garbage. Plus, it was clear that the author was at least thinking about wrapping everything up when he was told to rush the ending.

It could have been better, but I didn't feel like Ratman suffered too badly from "sudden ending" syndrome.
>>
>>144367047
Wrong, wrong and wrong
You completely missed the damn point of the series just like a plebeian speedreader

He's not "right" about the humans, he's way too one-sided because he had a lot of their negative thoughts float into him against his will because of the Reishi which skewered his view on humanity in a major way and he couldn't see the good points

This is where Yoh differs from Hao, he never had the Reishi so even though he didn't like humans he did see good points about them(eventually meeting Manta helped that too)

Now Flowers really shat on the series
>The kids are cunts
>Hana is an asshole
>Alumni is a failure of an Anna and really annoying
>Men is creepy
>Yoh and Anna killed by a fucking Helicopter
>Jeanne killed by some bitch somehow
>Horohoro is a neet
>Lyserg nowhere near to be found
>Redseb and Seyram are evil for some reason
>G8
>Tamao is now a lame Anna clone but tries so hard to be edgy as fuck it's insufferable
>Ryu is a bum instead of seeking his best place with this buddies
>Chocolove is still in jail
>Ren is nowhere to be fucking found while his wife gets murdered
>Jews from Yahabe have literal asspull powers with no explanation
>New Asakura branch out of fucking nowhere
>Yohane's sister is a literal shitty rehash of Tao Jun
I could go on and on

Only good thing was Death Zero
And it's a joke how Hao was a better mother to Hana than fucking Tamao was
And another fucking thing, why wasn't Hana left with Yoh's grandpa at Izumo? Why did they drop him off at useless Tamao?
If they had dropped him at Yoh's Grandpa Hana might have been more mature by the start of the series

Calling me a speed reader when you missed what I said about cynicism and Hao.

One of Hao's biggest points is that humans and shamans are kind of incompatible and he's kind of right. Not because he can read minds, but because society had become increasingly secular. Shamanism is dying far faster than it did previously because the world doesn't care for it anymore. Even the humans who found out about the SF just sent an army to try and kill off the remaining contestants and try and take the GS for themselves.

Yoh and Hao are two sides of the same coin, but neither of them is objectively right and the series goes great lengths to show that. Yoh is just more agreeable because he'a not genocidal.

Aside from that I agree about flowers except for a few characters. Chocolove's story is about forgiving himself and redemption. So him being in prison is fine because he's serving time for his crimes. Lyserg being Mia is fine because he's a detective doing his job. Horo Horo is a sticking point because it hilight my problem with the the OG ending. He get's the most back story charactization of the whole cast and it amounts to nothing in the end. Same with Ryu, he just gave up on his dream to be an actual father figure for Hana.

But like I said, death zero was a turning point because he's actually interesting so we both can agree on that.
>>
>>144368937
>One of Hao's biggest points is that humans and shamans are kind of incompatible and he's kind of right.
A point which pretty much everyone in the series made
The problem was that Hao's "solution" to kill humanity was absolute bullshit

Hao went the wrong path when he couldn't get over his desire for revenge
As Ohachiyo says to him at the end of Mappa Douji, "In the end you're nothing but a human"(well that's not the actual quote it's actually much longer but I just simplified it)

You could argue that Hao would be similar to how Yoh is had he never went the wrong path

I don't see how it's cynical, if anything the ending showed that Hao's soul was finally somewhat at ease thanks to Yoh
>>
>>144369542
>I don't see how it's cynical
The cynical part is how even though Hao's philosophy was proven wrong. He revived everyone to live in a world where some of the cast are unable to fulfill their dreams. They even hilight that in the last chapter.

>>
>>144370070
Well I think that's the lesson in Shaman King
Sometimes you don't get what you want in life
It's the bittersweet truth that fits a bittersweet manga like Shaman King

But it also means that you don't need to stop trying(like Yoh who promised Hao he would make the world a better place)

I think people tend to misinterpret the message of the series because it's not really that straightforward

Hao's major problem was that he cared too much about the world that surrounded him to the point where he forgot about himself(and then Yoh saved his soul)
After that ending there was no way Hao ever considered annihiliating the human race ever again but he made Yoh promise to him that he would make the world a better place(just to test his trust)...after all when Yoh died in Flowers he didn't destroy the human race

Instead, what bothers me in Flowers is that for example in Horohoro's case he's not even trying...he should be at the mountains trying to raise those Fuki Fields

Stuff like Yoh/Anna getting killed by a Helicopter is straight bullshit tho and is cheap shock at best

>>
>>144371305
I honestly don't know what he was thinking
Shaman King didn't need a sequel in the first place
>>
>>144371523
It was because Shueisha were starting up a new Jump branded Magazine and needed a big series to drum up interest/sales to start it off. They went and asked Takei to do a continuation of Shaman King for it and Takei isn't exactly going to turn down work. It's ironic considering they cancelled Shaman King in Jump and yet they asked for a sequel series to it for their new magazine's #1 manga.

Also that magazine was shitcanned which is why flowers unceremoniously stopped getting updates.

Takei had teased a sort of continuation back in the day with Funbari no Uta to begin with

I think the good sales of the Kanzenban restored Shueisha's faith on the property(Flowers eventually went on to become a top seller in it's respective magazine too)

The sequel was still a mistake though...particularly the way Takei executed it

>Also that magazine was shitcanned which is why flowers unceremoniously stopped getting updates.
Other series from that magazine moved on to other magazines so you're wrong, Takei simply took that opportunity to stop the series(which was a good thing imo because it was a trainwreck)

Not him, but that's probably a case-by-case thing, and it's possible (though we obviously don't know for sure) that Shueisha's other magazines just didn't want it. I mean, clearly not every single manga from Kai was going to get continued somewhere else.

>>144391210

>>
>>144391541
>Flowers was the best selling title in the Magazine
Yes, but it was also basically a battle shounen. The things that got continued were mostly unusual stuff (Musume no Iede, 87 Clockers, Koshoku Robot, etc.) that probably just caught an editor's eye by being different, and some of them got picked up by shoujo/josei magazines and even other publishers due to circumstances. Whereas Flowers, even aside from being a mess, didn't really have much to differentiate it from other fighting series. If someone had picked something like that up, it would have been primarily for sales, and while it was the best-seller in Kai (largely, I assume, because it was a mainstream-type series in a very eclectic/niche magazine that was clearly not planned around sales in the first place), that's not really enough when shit like WSJ and WYJ that might have taken it are already full of higher-selling battle shounen (and UJ already had/has Jumbor to fill their shitty-Takei-sequel quota).

>I think the last part with Death Zero and Hana looking to finally mature(I swear Hao is literally a better parent to him that shitty Tamao) was the best part and the part that most fans liked
Part of what made Death Zero good was the fact that Flowers didn't have many interesting shaman/spirit dynamics. All I can remember is the illuminati plus and chuuni swordsman and the rest are expressionless oversouls or oni. Amidamaru wasn't given the same dynamic he had with Yoh and Death Zero was looking like the stern spirit that would force Hana to learn some self control since both of them are prone to fits of rage.

>I'd be down for a redo of Flowers if he made it good this time around but I doubt that would be case
Same. Conceptually I like some of what flowers was doing but it would have to be a major overhaul since stuff like the G8 just really fuck with the setting.
>>
>>144391846
Wait, do you actually have a source on that? Because if you do, then I'm obviously wrong and there's no need to waffle around citing its sales and shit for circumstantial evidence. >Retcon edgy Anna clone Tamao
>make Alumni more likeable/less violent and make her a bit more original
>make Men less creepy and more tolerable
>make Hana less of a cunt, like I get he's supposed to be a brat but tone it down a bit(e.g have him be nice to Amidamaru once in a while dammit)
>Have Lyserg play a role where he's sort of a detective and he detects that Hana's life is in danger
>Have Chocolove be released from Jail earlier than expected because of his good conduct
>Have a bit of focus on Faust, what happened to him(was he even in Flowers? I can't remember) because I remember him saying he would work on Anna's inn but we never got any closure to that
>Have Ryu help train Hana or something instead of just being a bum doing nothing
>Come up with more original characters to replace old ones instead of just "Here's a fat version of Ryu lmaooooooo"
etc.

Goddammit, I'm a better writer than Takei is

He also ended Ultimo too

I'm guessing he did it because he needed to decrease his load and wanted to work on Nekogahara
>>
>>144392602
My biggest problems are with the overall cosmology of Flowers. I got the impression that once your term as Shaman King is over you dissolve into the great spirit. Instead you apparently keep your retinue and just fuck off to your own partition while the new guy takes over. Which would be cool until you realize that somehow they still can effect things in the world and also have the power to impeach the newest king. The Flowers of Maize is also just a ridiculous excuse to have another shaman fight when all you need to do is have people targetting Hana because of his connection to Hao in the first place.

I don't mind the old cast doing their own things and stepping aside to allow Hana to have his own story. And I think characters like Lyserg and Chocolove are fine as they are written. Horo Horo should have just become a farmer living in the country working towards his dream. Damuko staying dead is fine by me but I was never happy with the whole "only takes her true form once" rule. But it all falls in line with the bittersweet tone of Shaman King so that's just personal preference. Faust is never actually shown in flowers from what I remember but he did promise to help the inn out. It looks like he just chose to stay dead with Eliza though so maybe something changed, it just needs to be explained.

Things I liked in flowers:
>Seeing the previous shaman king's influence on the world
>Death Zero

Biggest changes I would make are
>Remove FoM tournament,
- Just have the Illuminati come after Hana and his family because they still have some power in the world and they resent Hao for threatening the paradigm they have held for 500 years.
>Remove G8
- Previous kings should be represented by the factions they left behind. Whether it be organizations like the Illuminati or bloodlines in the case of older kings.
>Introduce Death Zero earlier
- Hana needs his own spirit guardian so do that sooner than later. Amidamaru is too passive for that role anymore.

Ultimo ended a year later, and Jumbor is still going. There's no reason to think he was specifically ending all his series to free up space.

But he finished it as a doujin. Actually, Takano's fucking great about not abandoning his shit. Blood Alone was originally a set of doujinshi in like 2002, and then he got it published years later, and then it got canceled so he found a new publisher, and then they canceled it too so he finished it as a doujin again. And he also managed to get that Cronos Haze reboot running like twelve years after the original got cancelled.

Well I wasn't thinking of making Lyserg, Chocolove, Horohoro main characters

I was just thinking of having them as side-characters that show up once in a while to assist Hana

How's this? We could have Damuko just go back to her human form permanently and then leave for heaven while having an emotional farewell scene with Horohoro and then Horohoro moving on and finding another spirit...that would fall in line with Shaman King

But that would remove all the plot besides the other Asakura branch(even though I don't like fucking G8 and I was very confused with the whole FoM thing)
Also the whole Yahabe/Jews thing was very confusing

>Remove Amidamaru

>>
>>144393423
>I was just thinking of having them as side-characters that show up once in a while to assist Hana
One thing that's tricky for me is having old characters show up in a sequel series. You need to balance how much of a role they will have. I'm fine with them not being in flowers to any real degree because I was interested in seeing a different perspective on things. Kind of like how the adults in SK left things to their kids, the new problems in the world should be left to the next generation. Mentor roles are fine but you don't need to have every character come back just for nostalgia's sake.

>>Remove Amidamaru
Not what I said. But Amidamaru is really forgettable in Flowers because he's lost a lot of the stern nature he had. He's too subservient to Hana and it throws their dynamic off. He became closer to early Bason. Hana needs someone who will help him reign in his outbursts and pairing him off with Japanese red baron was a step in the right direction.

>>144356382
Great ending which brought the story to its end, both litteraly and metaphorically.

The giant idiot is both the parody of a shounen protagonist and a metaphora for the author's attempt at ending his story. Which, of course, the main character claws against and ultimately destroys.

While the last fight allows him to bring forward everything he learned as a fighter, it is disrupted by a convenient plot device, a litteral "dynamiting of the story", brought to the reader by a mad storyteller.

Nonetheless, the main character ultimate banter is a rejection of any transcendance and of any meta-discourse on the media itself.

tl;dr Shamo is a master piece, and it's ending is a literary lesson.

I agree
I'm thinking of them in a more Silva-role or something
Horohoro and/or Chocolove could do that(they could also show up to take care of some small fries leaving Hana and co. to take on the big guys), while Lyserg would be more off-hands and instead play the detective and inform Yohmei, Tamao etc. when he finds something suspicious/dangerous
The Hanagumi Waitresses could be ordered Tamao to help in fights or something too

I just don't think completely neglecting the old character is a right thing to do and I think you can reinvent them in a good way if you do it right

I get what you mean, but they could have a sort of mini-arc addressing that
The "early Bason" comparison makes sense since Amidamaru laments Hana being so sad and mad all the time and he feels like he's not able to help him
