This has gone beyond the realm of bad translation and into making up shit. This isn't even excusable like mishearing "不審者" as "死んだ" in Bijutsubu's 2nd episode preview or translating Subaru's cut-off "Emilia" as "Rem".

How do we stop vidya-tier 'localization' from infecting our chinese cartoons?

If you can do a better job, do it.

This isn't one of those "It's free so you have no right to complain" things either. I hate shitty fansubs and I know only the most elementary parts of the japanese language. It still bugs me when someone translates "ohayo" as "how are you?" or something equally retarded. All I'm saying is that if you actually have the capacity to do a better translation, then you should. It would be a great service to the fandom, and the hobby in general. We need better translators and editors working on this shit.

I am not missing anything, I live in the region and have grown up with the drink.

Just confuses me that Americans call it a chai latte when the word chai already implies milk and sugar. First I thought it was some kind of heathenish chai+cafe blend thing, but if you guys are just using it in the Italian "cafe latte" sense then it is just silly. There is nothing Italian about the drink.

Nothing wrong with those two translations. Trying to preserve the original grammar structure is the most retarded mistake a translator can make. Specially considering how completely incompatible English and Japanese grammar are. The translation process should go:

Japanese sentence -> Interpretation of meaning -> English sentence

With no attempt to preserve form.

No to say form shouldn't be a concern, but there's really no reason to try and make it as close to the original. In fact doing so usually results in the constant awkward English that plagues scanlations. Though that is also because of ESLs.

>>
>>144358213
>Japanese sentence -> Interpretation of meaning -> English sentence
This, I think people that always call for ultra literal translations are unaware of how incompatible the two languages can be at times. It's truly an exercise in forcing a square peg into a round hole.
>>
>>144358449
Sometimes picking the less literal one is more appropriate because of the context. For example, "What are you doing here?" sounds more loaded with emotion than "Why are you here?", so it might be a good idea to choose that one over this one for a very expressive character or to emphasize surprise. The first one also sounds more like the speaker is reproaching the person for being there, so depending on the context it might be more appropriate too. Sure, those are subjective impressions, but translation inevitably goes through subjective choices.
>>
You know all this nostalgia about fansub era really doesnt mean much when we were all doing this exact same shit back then too. We would take the show that has 9 groups doing it and bitch about who did what and what did where and it was all a giant pile of shit. The only thing that time had going for it was that the translations werent done or owned by a company.

The truth is that while sometimes they make mistakes or over localize something they are still better than 4/5ths of the traditional sub groups that existed. Ive been around for 15 years or so so i remember the days of mass naked child events and grabbing hardcoded .avi files encoded a 640x480 xvid. Crunchy does a pretty decent job.
>>

The problem with the argument that their translations are bad is that most of the errors are so terribly minor they dont matter or are simply matters of opinion. They have had some somewhat large errors yes but i dont think ive ran into something that makes me angry. More often than not its people splitting hairs about them not adding honorifics or not translating a reference fully.

For the record i always found translation notes to be annoying as hell. I dont need some asshat throwing a bunch of text on screen to tell me that neko means cat.

The only reasonable translation notes are the ones that are separate from the source. If you absolutely have to throw them in put them at the end of the show or the last pages of the manga chapter/volume. Blasting a wall of text onscreen for something that isnt even a gag or a real joke is just a distracting mess.
>>
>>144359716
They're being overused in the anime honestly. Amano usually only uses them from a distance.
>>
>>144359945
Exactly what the other anon said. TL Notes were never a problem in good groups, but faggots kept whining about them explaining the joke or the context of a story or what historical figure they were referencing. And your case never happened, unless it was by faggot fuckers gg or some equally cancerous group.
Not anyone's fault if you don't like a small note at the bottom. Same with TL Notes in manga. People always complain they put kg into pounds in a very small note on the side of the page, because of course you're forced to read it even if you know kg/pounds and fuck anyone that tries to make something available for the public without sacrificing the source content.

A good example is TL note for a teruterubozu. It's not needed, but there's nothing wrong with adding a small note explaining what it is. Way better than changing their entire sentence to "accommodate" something.

>Blasting a wall of text onscreen

Is not what I'm talking about, faggot. This is exactly the shit I mean with you memeing it to death with hyperbole. Every translation note is a wall of text that requires you to pause the vieo to even have time to read it. They're all books and they're all intro Japanese classes. They're all written by people who just want to show off their basic knowledge. ANd every other shitpost under the sun. Fuck you.
>>
>>144352764
CR gets a lot of their translations from the production company themselves. And they suck at engrish. Too bad CR doesn't really give a shit and clean them up since most of their audience can't into moonrunes anyway.
>>
>>144360143
>>144360295
Chinese is also much closer grammatically to English than Japanese is to English (less reliant on context) so autotranslations get fucked less.
>>
>>144360487

If you have watched anime for longer than a month and dont know what a bozu is you might as well just give up. I enjoy a more literal translation but in the end id rather have them change something TOTALLY INSIGNIFICANT into something that makes more sense without a cultural reference note plastered onscreen. If you want your notes they can be slammed at the end of the episode where they belong.

>>144360523
I dont like notes and i dont care if you dont like that i dont like notes so you can go suck a dick.
>>
>>144355290
I'm opposed to CR on principle but I have to admit that CR actually does a better job on Amanchu than Asenshi. Part of the show's comedy and appeal is based on its characters who speak in accents or peculiarly, like Pikari and her grandmother. CR's script captures the grandma's country accent and Pikari's sometimes-formal, sometimes-silly manner of speech. Asenshi's just smoothes it all over with the exact same bland standard English. Asenshi's script takes the humour and liveliness from the show, making it overall a more boring experience than it should be.

The Teko and Pikari jokes are all basically impossible to translate so it makes sense that neither CR nor Asenshi did a perfect job. They tried, I'll give them credit for that, although Asenshi, in not trying overly hard like CR does, indubitably does the better job.

>>144360545
Yet I fucking abhor this mess of a language because of the atrocious tones and a thousand different dialects. The tones are the reason why why after living in China for two years I still can't hold much of a basic conversation beyond a few phrases.

While when I got off the plane in Japan despite the vastly different grammar style I could get away with just basic vocab and sentence structures and have prolonged conversations with people with not much issue, unless a some vocab I didn't know popped up.

With Chinese I'm butchering 3/4 of the tones and most people can't understand what I'm saying. Also anyone over the age of 22 has atrocious putonghua and speaks the local dialect which sounds like an alien language to me and is largely incomprehensible.
>>

>someone's first anime
>they will instantly get it

You can't slam tl notes at the end of an episode. It's funny you complain about one line being a wall of text but advocate for getting all of them and posting them as an actual wall of text at the end after the fucking ED or during it.

Because it's too hard to read a small note but people will be open to reading an entire screen's worth of notes on things after the episode is done, sure.

There isn't any alternative nowadays, anon. 99% of the sub groups that still exist only take CR's shitsubs and put fancy typesetting on top of it, and they take more than a week to do that.
And the funniest thing is that normal people pay for this catastrophe, and since they don't know any better they believe that CR's subs are correct. You should have noticed how many people here on /a/ often talk about mistranslations in an episode as if it was right.
On the bright side, at least nothing has reached the level of Funi's Nourin subs yet.

You can do it anon. I believe in you so please believe in me too, I'm trying but it's too much.
Use VNs or untranslated nip phone games to help you. im@s helps me understand most basic characters in hiragana/katakana and I can read around 30-40% of a sentence. Enough anime watching will help you understand common phrases and words.

Do it for your waifu.

>Enough anime watching will help you understand common phrases and words.
I try to pay attention to that too, actually listening to what's being said and I notice that it helps.

Hardest part I find is all the different meanings words can have and pinpointing the context of a sentence sometimes seems impossible.
At least I've gotten the kana down so easily, I definitely shouldn't give up.
I'll try my best, so you do too!

I usually just wait for BD packs desu, since I know even the best groups make obvious mistakes and I'd rather not download updates I'll never watch. Only exception is DBS because of the episode spam, and I usually just download a couple episodes from current shows to see if I like them.

The norm just clearly aren't elitist about translations and won't be able to notice them and it's clear that it's speed over quality. You can always wait 2 days longer or a week longer if you want better subs but not too many people are willing to wait that long. You can just check the Macross thread and people are already throwing a fit for just a day's delay from a fansub group.

The point in this case is to pair it with -subs. Normalfagsubs has too many syllables and looks like you stuck them together with some duct tape; like some kind of shitty German word. Normiesubs is streamlined, easy to picture, and flows like nectar. This has nothing to do with whatever emotions you have tagged on to the root words, this is about creating a compound word that isn't a mess.

Translator in the industry here, have been subbing for one of the big companies for 3+ years on top of other freelance work.

After talking with other translators at conventions, can confirm that Crunchy pays some of the lowest per episode. One Crunchy TL got paid around $80 per episode. The average I've seen from other big-name companies is upwards of $2-300 per episode, and more if there are idol songs or shit in them.

Crunchy probably hires bottom-of-the-barrel JP-EN TLs who aren't good enough to pass the translation tests from other companies.

From what I've seen, the stuff on Netflix and Hulu tends to be a bit better because they work for Funi/other companies directly, and not Crunchy.
