Probably the former. He gets his power from the sun, so I imagine there's some bullshit spell or power one of the commandments has that they use to block out the sun or something and rob Escanor of his power so he ends up losing.

Now Escanor will no doubt get to demonstrate that he's stronger than any of the commandments- which is probably why they'll choose to cheese him rather than beat him with their own power.
