Humans were destined to perish so the only way Akira could survived was to make him into a demon. Besides, Ryo trusted Akira's pure heart could tame Amon. It was a bet but I guess Ryo couldn't think straight with having his mind divided in two. Anyway, Akira wasn't so lucky on the continuities without Ryo, see TV Devilman and Devilman G, where Amon actually kill him and take his identity so I guess Ryo did somethin right
