They keep having side conversations about things like clothing and etiquette, sometimes with odd sexual undertones.
They are collectively dumber than a sack of bricks, which leads them to continuously find themselves in situations that are seemingly impossible to escape from.

I guess Part 3 isn't your thing. It's one of the weaker Parts anyway, despite how much Japan loves it. 4 and 6 are without a doubt much better, 5 too if you don't read it in English. And 7 and 8 are on a different level altogether. Arak I gets way better at writing as the series goes along and the writing and scenarios in 3 are pretty juvenile compared to even stuff he was doing just a few years later.

I think the answer is probably "recognition". Being acknowledged for their work/translations keeps them motivated, even if they work for free. It's like you spend time and effort to make shit for people but don't get any hot (You)s.

I've been reading part 5 for the second time lately, and it's surprisingly entertaining. Fights are mostly great, cast is ok, Buccellati and Mista are cool guys. Diavolo is pretty bad and the beginning was atrocious but it's a nice part overall.
