Why would somebody watch a sub when a dub is available?

Subtitles distract from the visuals, which are more important than the voice acting. The artists put significantly more effort into the pictures and animation. Information can also be lost from reading subtitles, as it can be difficult to understand which words are being inflected.

I want to watch things how the creator intended for them to be viewed
>>
>>141813893
That's a bad argument, because the creators intended for them to be viewed by a Japanese-speaking audience. It cannot be achieved unless you speak Japanese. They did not intend for people to read every line of dialogue.

I can read quickly enough to pay attention to both, so there's really no problem for me. I especially cannot stand watching dubbed K-On!. I hate the characters' voices in the dub, and their regular voices do not match their singing voices at all.

Anon, I can read an entire sub line in 1/5th the time it takes the VA to say it. I'm only losing 20% viewing efficiency in exchange for not having to listen to the sorry-ass excuse for voice acting that western dub studios shit out into the world.

Dubs are perfectly fine and if you unironically hate dubs then no wonder you watch anime in the first place

I like the sound of Japanese voices more than the American ones they use to dub them in my language.

I prefer to watch dubs unless the subbed version has better voice acting. There are just some dubs that sound like absolute garbage, while others are excellent.

But mostly I watch a sub if there isn't a dub yet.

False. Shows like Concrete Revolutio were infact created in mind for global viewing, it's becoming a more popular thought process as streaming sites gain momentum and become more popular.

Not really. They don't dub anything over here so I'm used to subs.

I'm a bit hearing impaired so I watch native language stuff with captions/subtitles anyway. It's not hard.

And having a third-party rewrite the script can't?
>>
>>141813817
People will say they like the voices better but the reality is that almost all writing in anime is fucking dogshit and you just don't notice until it's actually spoken out loud.
When you read it you automatically put a filter on it.

Shows that have a good dub are usually the kind of shows that have the better kind of voice acting in Japanese that you wouldn't want to miss on.

Depends on the quality of the dub. When it gets dubbed, it isn't only translated, it's often rewritten to sync with the lip movements on screen, or to change references for international audiences, or change puns/wordplay. It's not a huge deal, but I'd rather keep those little details that were there originally instead of getting a second-hand version. Usually the original is better.

But there are exceptions, like if I'm going to watch a Dragonball show, I'd much rather hear the dubbed version.

And if it weren't for dubs' ability to rewrite the source material, we'd never have the dub of Ghost Stories, and that is pretty damn funny at times.
>>
>>141814043
This. Learn how to read beyond a third grade level. Subs require a momentary glance.
>>
>>141813817
Because dubs normally have awful, distracting voice acting. Even "good" dubs may have some good VAs, but there's pretty much always one bad enough to make it unwatchable. And that's ignoring stuff like the content of the script and stuff that gets lost in translation - though a lot of subs fail in this department too.

Personally, I'm a fast reader and I tend to read subtitles without really paying attention to them (side effect of growing up in a household where subtitles were always on maybe), but I agree with the fact that it's difficult to understand which words are being inflected, which is important.
>>
>>141815116
This, I find it hard to NOT read subtitles. Which can be annoying when watching stuff like comedy in english and the subtitle gives away something like the punchline of a joke before the comedian does.
>>
>>141813817
>Subtitles distract from the visuals
If you're illiterate
>which are more important than the voice acting
True for dubs, since they use cheap actors, but Japanese put huge efforts into voice acting
> The artists put significantly more effort into the pictures and animation
Only true when things aren't moving fast, in which case you have plenty of time to read subtitles
>Information can also be lost from reading subtitles, as it can be difficult to understand which words are being inflected.
Dubs suffer from this as well, as you have no reference to what is actually being said, you're at the mercy of translators, which are notorious for making mistakes or localizing content.
>>
>>141813893
This.

What are some good dubs, anyway?
>Black Lagoon

I heard that FMA:B also has a pretty good dub, though I never watched it with dub myself.

What are some other good ones? Baccano?

Not if you have an average reading speed

That's subjective, but if you read subs you preety much don't need any voice sound

Also

just learn japanese, you dirtbag.

You're right with that.
Although I have, in occasion, seen people talk about what dubs are good before.

>>
Let me give you an example.
In King's Journey there's a girl named Sakura. In the show there are kids that call her mean names using puns like mekura (meaning ignorant) or dokura (meaning poison).
In the dub they just changed her name to Lily and the kids call her Silly Willy.
>>
subs are my training wheels
as I learn more japanese, I look at the subs less
until eventually I don't need them anymore and turn them off
>>
Television shows are in fact designed with closed captioning in mind. Subs are made for native speakers with hearing-disabilities, and most content gets official subs for regional release. Sub are also always cheaper, because you have to write a script anyway to give to the dubbers.
In the vast majority of countries, including Japan, people are used to watching English movies and television with subtitles. Part of designing for the format means being aware that edges may be cut off, network logos may be superimposed, and subs may be on.

So while learning 日本語 and watching アニメ in its original format is always superior, you're losing very little by having subs on. You would have to go out of your way to make the scene overwhelmingly dependent on seeing 100.0% of the screen, and creators aren't going to fuck over deaf people and foreigners for no reason.

All of this is ignoring the fact that many anons here use anime to learn Japanese. And that you're an asshole for implying that the work of VAs isn't valuable.
>>
>>141813817
Because the voice acting is usually noticably better, which is not that much of an accomplishment since dubs are usually pretty terrible. Though there are good dubs too some of which I prefer to the original.
>>141814111
Good get in a bad thread.
>>
I even use subtitles for English videos, like on YouTube or wherever else they're available. It just makes things easier for me; it takes a fraction of a second to look at the words and then you can spend the rest of the time digesting what those words actually mean while you look at the screen.
