Friendly Reminder

How to tell if something is a shitpost:
>calls the community made guide/whatever method a piece of shit with no reasoning given why
>insults someone giving helpful advice with no reasoning given why
>attempts to create arguments over virtually nothing (eg opinions without facts)
>"spam questions" that are easily answered via a 1 second glance at the guide
>uses obtuse Japanese fragments interspersed with English to attempt bypass people trying to filter the shitposts
>any mention of anime being shit, or claiming that X isn't "real Japanese"
>spells the word as romaji

Anyone can make it if they put the effort in!

You're not born with willpower anymore than weight lifters somehow pop out of their mothers already jacked up with massive muscles on their tiny little bodies. You develop willpower by forcing yourself to do something even when you don't feel like doing it. That's all it is!

There are 20+ DJT images floating around, and you decided to use a plain image that doesn't say DJT anywhere on it. You fucked up.
>>
>>141769715
Requesting that for next time, to kindly put DJT somewhere on the OP image. It helps in finding the thread when quickly scanning the catalogue images.

There's no need for specific DJT pictures. The OP says everything that needs to be said - "DJT" and "Read the guide before asking questions" - and the specific DJT images just cause autism.

>>141770030
If you're using 4chan X, which you should be, just open up the settings, go to the Filter tab, then select "Subject" from the drop down list and put this in there:
/djt/i;highlight;

Now you never need to search for the thread again. Or if you don't want to do that, a simple CTRL+F for DJT will find the thread quicker than manually looking through the catalog. The 4chan X catalog has a search field and I'd imagine the default catalog does too, so you could even just use that.

Does anybody else take breaks from new cards when your retention turns absolute garbage? From the last three days of new cards I've remembered 20/60. Should I just deal with it and keep going or will just doing reviews for a few days be okay?
>>
>>141770380
The threads on /int/ seem to get by just fine with no specific picture.

Really, with the amount of shitposting lately, the less things people have to get autistic about the better.
>>
Would I be right in assuming that most people quit moon at the beginning? I went through the entirety of kanjidamage and my mining deck just hit 2k vocab, is there still any "major" obstacle ahead that could make me quit? Or is it just a case of slow and steady vocab grinding from now on?
>>
>>141771068
Learning nip is an exponential process. The better you get, the faster you learn.

However the first months are the worst.
You are forcing sguiggily lines and gibberish in your head to understand a whole new way of communicating, but theres a "ceiling" you come to that you push and push and you eventually break, then its like a whole new world.

I know that sounds really gay, but you'll know when you get there. Dont think about what might cause you to quit. Assume its nothing.
>>
>>141771068
The worst part is over, but you're still in for the intermediate hell.
That is, when you get to the point where you read 3-4 easier VNs, LNs, manga series or whatever, but you still can't easily read anything harder than that, and feels that even though you've been reading for a year you still meet several unknown words in every sentence.

I've just started with the anki cards, and I have the RTk and core decks setup. Will the rtk deck start showing the reverse side, I.e. train recognition instead of recall, or should I depend on the core vocab deck for that? Also, is there any deck someone can recommend that has definitions written in Japanese?

So I fucked around with the Reading List in the interest of giving it some semblance of organisation, but I think it looks pretty fucking awful. I'm not the maintainer, but I figured people might be more encouraged to use it and contribute to it if it were a bit better organised, so I experimented with colouring in the format and difficulty fields to that end, but as I said, I think it looks like shit.

Please go take a look and give your thoughts (you'll need to select the dynamic list to see the changes). If the general opinion is that it's awful, then it's easy enough for me to undo it.

The other option is manually re-arranging all the fields. There are two ways this could be done:
1. By difficulty, THEN format. Everything rated "easy" would be at the very top, and everything within the easy section would be sorted by format.
2. By format, THEN difficulty. VNs, for instance, might all be at the top, then all the entries in the VN section would be sorted by difficulty. The next section might then be manga.

This is obviously a lot more effort so I decided to try the colouring approach first.
>>
>>141775713
Becoming intermediate at Japanese lies somewhere on the road towards becoming fluent at Japanese, but as everyone knows that is impossible. That road doesn't exist. Therefore becoming intermediate, too, is impossible.
>>
>>141776035
Oh yeah, and I meant to say...
Please give your preference between these two options.

いつか > someday
フラっと > in the manner of wandering
どっかに行っちゃっても > even if I went somewhere
知らない > I wouldn't know
んだから > because

Because even if I wandered off somewhere someday I wouldn't know (about it/something/anything)

The だから adds a "because" or "since" kind of meaning. In Japanese だから・から is used in reverse order from english, so it's added to the end of the phrase instead of the beginning of the one it relates to.

A liberal translation might be something like "Don't blame me if I end up wandering off at some point..."

The verb 知る doesn't mean "know" when used like it is in this example. It's like they're saying "I'm not going to stick around and find out what happens to you if..."

警察は、島袋さんが行方不明になった場所の近くを車で通ったというアメリカ人の男から話を聞いていました。この男が「動かなくなった女性を捨てた」と言った場所を調べると、島袋さんが見つかったため、警察は男を逮捕しました。

Let me get this straight:
>Police asked story from american guy passing in car by disappearance scene
>Said guy tells where he dumped body, check place find body
>detain guy

Why would the guy just say he dumped a unmoving body after being asked
>>
>>141785113
Some people turn themselves in because they can't bear facing their demons anymore. Or he just thought that they have evidence against him and hoped to get a few years off for cooperating.

To give a brief summary.

>some people didn't like the original image
>tried to create a new standard one which resulted in a ton of infighting
>other people who weren't especially attached to the original image but also didn't like the new one took the opportunity to experiment with new OP images
>with this, the infighting died down as people came to realise that it doesn't really matter what the OP image is

And now we're at this thread there the OP image doesn't even have "DJT" on it and instead just uses a character associated with DJT.

Do you think this is an okay result after a year of non-serious studying? Like a decent amount of the time I barely read proper texts and I skipped a whole lot of anki and only have like 3k words learnt in it.

I talked to people a whole lot and watched heaps of subbed anime though...
>>
>>141776035
Difficulty then format (option 1) makes more sense for how the list is likely to be used.

People might decide they aren't going to read a given format or a given thing, but they are sorting by difficulty first. I don't think as many people decide they are going to read exactly 1 format as their first concern. So option 2 would force more scrolling around between sections where only a minority of things are of interest for most people.

>have a friend who says he knows how to speak japanese

Where does that even place him on the knowledge of Japanese? He clearly knows how to speak it, so would that make him half-fluent or something? Also, I hate to ask but is romaji even acceptable if you just want to learn how to speak the language, not read or write it?

I don't even know how he managed to do this.
>>
>>141799053
You can be able to speak a language fluently and even on a native level while being unable to read or write. While uncommon these days, it wasn't rare at all in the after WWII era. Hell, my grandma is like that, although she has learned to read somewhat semi-decently over the many years.

It's called being illiterate. You wouldn't call it half-fluent, just fluent and illiterate. Romaji is obviously pretty useless either way, since nothing important or interesting has ever been written in romaji.

I think I read up to like half of tae kim and then just read and looked up stuff in dojg. I have 318/376 (84%) in anki too but I only have like 3k mature cards because I was really slack with it, but I probably know a lot more from just reading. Sometimes I'd read a lot and sometimes I wouldn't read at all for a while, but I talked with a lot of people on hellotalk and stuff. Also a lot of subbed anime.

I don't know but I found grammar one of the easier parts and vocabulary the hardest but yeah, that's pretty much what I did. I dabbled in the language a bit before the year but it was just learning hiragana and maybe like the start of tae kim I'm not sure

I personally like to find rare music/BDMVs uploaded from fan groups on tienda.baidu.com. Just beware that 99% of their content is hosted on Baidu cloud which can be kind of slow downloading from in western countries. I use an chrome/firefox extension that downloads with aria2 to boost it's speed.

Baidu cloud is nice though in that they don't delete illegal content as often compared to other file hosting services.

I'm going to try learning the kana again this weekend, how helpful would writing them over and over be for memorization as opposed to grinding realkana flashcards? Grinding realkana is what I did last year and I'm not sure if the way I tried to memorize them was bad or if it was because after I memorized them I never really took it farther and ending up starting to forget them six months down the line because i wasn't using that knowledge for anything
>>
>>141802420
>and ending up starting to forget them six months down the line because i wasn't using that knowledge for anything
that was your problem, not realkana

i used it and i dont have any problems with kana, unless it was the ヲ i saw the other day
>>
>>141802420
Stop overthinking it dude. Just learn all the kana in 3 days max, realkana is good.

I used this first, then used realkana to drill them
https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-hiragana/
>>
>>141802420
Kana is really not a big deal at all, just grind them as hard as you can. There's only a hundred or so. Writing them helps of course, so does realkana.
This is in the context of learning Japanese though, because if you do go down that path, then it's pretty much inevitable that you will know the kana and your method doesn't really matter there. You should get exposed to them often enough (and read them) so that the knowledge stays fixed in your brain.

At the start you'll notice similarities between different kana, or hiragana specifically in your example. Figuring out a way that helps you remember them easily will be helpful. For example, I remember back when I started, め and ぬ as you'll notice are very similar so I recalled them as a pair of the well-known word "menu". Small shit like that will help you through the initial stages.

In either case, learning the kana should be very quick especially if you expose yourself to text since the start and not leave them for months.

Besides, the way other people may or may not treat you is far from the worst thing about living in Japan. Their piracy laws make America look like a bastion of freedom. The only place I can think of that is anywhere near as bad is Germany where record companies and such (not your ISP!) can send letters to your house with fines if you get caught even once.

I like the separation between professional relations and personal relations. In professional relations (like waiter and costumer), you're polite even if you don't like them. In personal relations, you can start to express how you really feel. Problem is, Japan treats like 99% of their personal relationships like the rest of the world treats professional relationships. Better than having no concept of professional relations at all, but still kinda sucks.

Eh, I'd kind of prefer that. Harsh indifference sounds pretty nice to someone who would prefer to limit at least 99% of their human interaction to an Internet connection.

Not Chinese harsh indifference, though. If I get stabbed or ran over in a busy street, I'd prefer the authorities to at least understand the situation and respond in some manner, aside from maybe taking my wallet as I bleed to death.

>>141803826
>i just want a file, not a stream, and i can play it on whatever i want, and transfer it around whenever i want, on trips etc
This is the most idea option, in my opinion. A lot of people prefer streaming services, however, as they have an almost ubiquitous access to high speed Internet. This has a pretty negative flow on effect in my nation, where all Internet is basically shit and data capped, with no real existence of a public wifi network you can take advantage of if living or being in an urban area. Our largest ISP offers a TV streaming service over their broadband but it isn't uncapped and ends up chewing through your data allowance for the month if you actually use it.

Streaming is a shitty system. Hard drives are relatively cheap for a reason. Fucking Google, man.
>>
>>141803914
They obviously do since the only person who knows which IP address is assigned to which physical address at a specific time is your ISP.

IP addresses alone can't be used to track down someone's real location, usually the best thing you can do with one is find out what city someone is from/lives nearest tp. The only way to make use of an IP address you have collected is to contact the ISP for that IP address and ask for the details of the person who was using it at a given time.
>>
>>141804000
I'm not even sure what you think my post meant, but I'm saying these law firms and shit can't just make a call and get your details from a quick chat with your ISP. Shit like that has a procedure that usually isn't even worth bothering with in the first place.
What they do resort to quite often is telling the ISP to write the letter themselves, without handing out any information. But as other anons already explained you can ignore those letters.

I'd say that at a bare minimum, long sentences with multiple clauses that you understand completely without a dictionary should be very commonplace, possibly even the majority depending on what you're reading. If you spend 24/7 hooked up to life support every time you look at anything related to Japanese, you're really deluding yourself if you believe that you're anything less than a beginner.

What's really embarrassing is that by this measure, it's obvious that a disproportionate amount of "translators" are still beginners.

Unless you have formal training in linguistics and etymology you don't really UNDERSTAND how the language works. You only know what it sounds like and how to mimic its basic patterns based on your own learned experience.

Basically if you don't know what phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax are, as well as how to identify and analyze their relevant categories in practice, then you can't call yourself advanced at any language, really.

"Intermediate" suggests that you've acquired a semi-practical level of knowledge. The head chef might not want to leave you alone in the kitchen all day, and he certainly wouldn't let you create items for the menu, but you're ready to take on the task of cooking the meat without having him look over your shoulder all the time. You're not a complete greenhorn anymore.

If you are completely unable to stand on your own in any practical scenario that isn't first week stuff, one wouldn't typically call someone in your position "intermediate". The term for you is "beginner".

>>141806192

Each of those areas of study exist to analyze the tools that people use naturally to communicate, you pretentious retard. Human language has functioned well enough to successfully bring civilizations through some of the toughest hurdles and most complex issues that humanity has ever faced for thousands of years before anyone thought to come up with terms like "morpheme".

I bet that you think that dictionaries completely dictate a language's vocabulary, too, as if a group of scholars could ever hold that kind of power.
>>
>>141806519
Everyone knows is meant. You didn't have to make this post.

It's not gay though because a penis is not a man. A penis is only a part of a man.
Liking penis doesn't mean you like men.

but would like some more examples does anyone have any?

DoJG has a good explanation I think
>>
>>141806861
Don't fret it, not even natives can explain the difference.
>>
>>141806861
が - used to present new information or to talk about something the hearer is either not expected to be conscious of or something which the hearer can't be conscious of (e.g. "who", since "who" doesn't refer to an actual person, the hearer can never be conscious of "who"). also used to make a topic out of something in a subordinate clause since the は particle can't be used in those.
は - used to make a topic out of information which is already known to the hearer, or to contrast something with something else.

I wouldn't get stressed out about it. The differences will become apparent through exposure.

Just to continue attacking the flaws here-

An intermediate weight lifter has acquired a noticeable amount of muscle mass and functional strength. He's just not going to win any championships.
An intermediate programmer knows all of that stuff about loops, functions, structs, and references, and could write you a basic data base, but is lacking in the advanced topics needed to be a programmer in today's environment.
An intermediate chef is someone who can work their section without help most of the time, but wouldn't be ready to run the kitchen if they needed to.
An intermediate martial artist could certainly kick the shit out of some street punk who doesn't know how to throw a punch. He's beyond that "a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing" level. He'd get his ass kicked in a tournament, though.

An intermediate language learner is... someone who fucks up 9 out of 10 actual information-filled sentences from native adults who are trying to communicate? Really? And we're suddenly changing what intermediate typically means based on our horrible education system's failings? I don't care if this is the standard terminology. It doesn't make sense.
>>
>>141807257
No one cares what you think should be the definition of intermediate. Trying to force your own pet definition will just confuse people.

Have you ever seen a book for an intermediate grammar course? It's still full of grammar that you absolutely need for even everyday chatter. An intermediate speaker will put a LOT of strain on his native partner who's trying to understand him, will have large holes in his vocabulary that he will only be able to fill with pointing at things and gesturing.

>>141807370

Those other definitions of intermediate are often measured out, and they all indicate the same thing: Moderately and/or conditionally functional.

I'm not just spouting completely shallow shit with no objective basis here. The foreign language learning education community has taken the definition of a word that indicates a level of ability and altered its meaning to match their incompetence. Now, instead of "moderately and/or conditionally functional", it's "almost not completely dysfunctional". Advanced, generally reserved for people who have all of the basics down and are ironing out the details needed to become a master, now refers to what would typically qualify as intermediate. You'd be hard pressed to argue otherwise. They're the ones with the pet definition. And that's bullshit.

If there are basically no practical scenarios where you can stand on your own, you're a beginner. If you can stand on your own conditionally, you're intermediate. If you can handle just about any typical scenario, you're advanced.
>>
>>141807824
>>They're the ones with the pet definition. And that's bullshit.
>Every language professor in the world is wrong, I'm right
The main reason they are defined like this is because of language courses. You want to put students with similar skill into the same group. Your idea of classification would just mean that even people who have been studying in school for 2-3 years would be still in the beginner class, and if they change school they may have to start from zero again. Your idea of advanced level is hardly even obtainable in a typical 4 years of high school language courses, which means there would only be beginner and intermediate classes, again hurting students.

Please stop posting.

>>
>>141808112

>your idea of classification would just mean that even people who have been studying in school for 2-3 years would be still in the beginner class

That's because they are.

What is a beginner? It's someone who can't do shit yet.
What is intermediate? It's someone who's not a fucking beginner, but isn't quite advanced yet, either.

A third year who's reading materials are easier than Yotsuba is indeed someone who can't do shit.

I know that it sounds bad from a marketing perspective (and that's all their redefining of established terms is), but if it's embarrassing to them that their final class for fourth year students is basically mid-intermediate level, then maybe they should get their shit together.
>>
>>141808390

Also, where did this talk about changing schools come from? How is that relevant to anything that we're talking about at all?

Unless you're suggesting that they're searching for education that isn't horrible, in which case, how the fuck is that a bad thing? Sure, the early students will be out of luck, but maybe it'll give the universities a kick in the ass.
>>
>>141808390
You want to change perfectly well working standards that are accepted everywhere in the world, just because you don't like the nomenclature. I'm not sure what else can I say.

Remember that "advanced" is not the top, there are still a few levels above that, like fluency and then native level. Language knowledge is considerably more involved than the random examples you brought up earlier like weight lifting, you need thousands of hours of studying before you can say that you're good at it.
>>
>>141808566

I'm saying that they don't work well. They're deceptive marketing, and I've ran into idiots who honestly believed that they knew something when they couldn't do anything with the language because of them.

I'd say that fluency fits the usual definition of "advanced" better. Advanced is usually where you're done with the fundamentals and are splitting off into more specialized knowledge. That sounds like fluency to native level to me.

Sorry that this is more Anki- than Japanese-related, but I'm absolutely thrilled and impressed by how effective Anki is, which is why I recently started converting my whole knowledge database into Anki cards and fit my workflow to Anki.

Do you use Anki for stuff besides Japanese learning, too? I wish I had found out about spaced repetition in school.

Also, I'm trying to create a note type I can widely use. Should I take this universal note type approach or just make more note types (e.g. ones specifically for definitions, vocabulary...)? These are the new fields I use:

--

Example: a particular

Mnemonic: way to remember info more easily, e.g. acronyms or personal stories involving the info

Principle: explains why the info is true, what the underlying assumptions and mechanisms are

Application: "How can I apply this knowledge in real life?", e.g. a card about some psychological
bias has this field have a strategy to become aware of and avoid the bias

Importance: rates importance of the info in 3 tiers (definitely need to know | probably n.t.k | probably don't n.t.k), so that I can filter less important cards out more easily when I need to cram or am short in time

Source: where I got the info from, so that I can look it up in more detail and with context or update, if necessary (references, links, name of lecturers, courses, books)

--

Anything else that would be useful?

I would also like to mention that image occlusion is awesome and the add-on named Image Occlusion 2 is now deprecated - you should use Image Occlusion 2 Enhanced.

I agree with the anon quoted in >>141810030. Calling beginner language learners intermediate just because they have passed the threshold of understanding "ohayou" is deceptive marketing by language-learning companies and not a true reflection of the learner's actual skill. If you read the CEFR framework for B1 and B2 you will see that an "ntermediate language learner does in fact meet the standards he speaks of, it's just that CEFR is largely ignored by greedy publishers who string beginners along with "intermediate" level textbooks year after year.

I didn't get straight A's so maybe it's アレ for me to say this but that sounds like a really gimmicky way to study invented by someone who can't do it normally (not "doesn't want to," I mean "can't")

it's also inflexible and ill-suited towards application which trumps memorization as a skill in the age of the internet; "how can I apply this" having a single concrete answer is just kind of 笑

I'd consider Japanese subs to me more like training wheels than English subs, English subs don't even really count as practice, using them is more similar to just not learning to ride a bike and walking instead

But idk I feel like if I listen to something raw and don't understand what's being said then I'm not going to improve at all, it's just like listening to random noises that don't mean anything to me for 20 minutes, but with japanese subs I can at least tell what's being said and match the sounds to the words, even if it ends up being more reading practice than listening practice

>way to study
The additional fields aren't prompted. Only Front and Back are, just like normally. The fields are for collecting meta-data to manage the cards and use the browser more effectively, or to provide context when I reveal the answer, so it's not a way of studying, but a way of managing the Anki decks.

Does anyone have any good ideas of how I can practice kanji writing at work. I have tons of spare time there that I can skive and it feels wasteful to not use it. So far I've just used the time to repeatedly scrawl down words that I've been struggling with, but it's not very efficient and lacks direction.

I'm not saying you should be a master, but a 100% to 50% skill disparity is just borderline ridiculous. And don't give me that "writing kanji" argument, hundreds of abstract radicals in thousands of often-nonsensical combinations aren't at all comparable to 50 extremely simple syllables

Me reading out words that I'm looking at on a page isn't even remotely comparable to listening to some natives having a long conversation about something at native speed without any written aid, they're both completely different forms of taking in information

If you watch any anime at all it's really hard to believe.

Your claim isn't remotely believable to me unless you've misrepresented yourself somewhere along the line. This isn't kansai-ben manzai or Inagawa Junji, this is slice of life we're talking about. It hardly gets easier than this, and yet you're telling me that you're stumbling with a full grasp of grammar and several years of experience

I think I've stated my disbelief enough

I understand most of the shit they say in SoL, for example something like Gochuumon I understand the majority of it, because it's casual shit the whole way through

But something with more specific themes like say Yuyushiki where they're always reading shit off of Japanese wikipedia and having pretty in depth conversations about random shit I get lost straight away, if I were reading it instead I'd have very little trouble with it, it's really just the speed they talk that's the problem I think, and I can't imagine having a lot of practice reading shit would help with parsing fast spoken dialogue, it seems like a completely different area

When I said "as low as 50% sometimes" I was talking about shit like that
