How to tell if something is a shitpost:
>calls the community made guide/whatever method a piece of shit with no reasoning given why
>insults someone giving helpful advice with no reasoning given why
>attempts to create arguments over virtually nothing (eg opinions without facts)
>"spam questions" that are easily answered via a 1 second glance at the guide
>uses obtuse Japanese fragments interspersed with English to attempt bypass people trying to filter the shitposts
>any mention of anime being shit, or "real Japanese"

It's not really to grade language skills. It's just a way to visualize how progress in RtK translates to coverage on vocabulary words.

For example, you could potentially build a vocabulary of a thousand words at or below N3 using only the first 700 kanji from RtK.

That doesn't really say anything about what was actually being done. You can use Anki for Japanese vocab for two years, adding 5 new cards a day and reading a volume of manga every three months and still be "studying" for that long. There is also the option of "studying" Genki1 and Genki2 for one year each.

to anyone struggling with the kore2k/6k

I recommending adding cards to it with the onyomi's of jukugo you come across in the kore deck.
I went from being stagnant for months to being able to plow through 20 cards a day easily in 20 mins.

It takes a lot of prep work each week but it's totally worth it.

I look up new word's kanji on kanjidamage; then I take the 3-5-star jukugo listed on the website, and then find them in my anki deck and move them to the front.
This way I learn vocab while simultaneously using and reinforcing the onyomi pronunciations I learned.

So after learning:
実 jitsu's onyomi - I'll move all of these kanji to the front:

真 (really) + 実 (truth) = 真実 (the truth)
現 (present time) + 実 (truth) = 現実 (reality)
事 (action/ incident) + 実 (truth) = 事実 (fact)

This is why the Core10k deck is better: it is arranged to introduce different readings of the same kanji so by the time you work through them, you already have a basic intuition of how unknown words are at least read. Not as effective as individually studying kanji alongside, but it saves time having to alter the 2k/6k deck.

It isn't really a huge deal. If you are adding 20 new words a day, after six months of consistent review most of those reading issues shouldn't big overwhelming. At the end of the day it is a matter of fine tuning something that already works pretty damn well to begin with.
>>
anyone switch from the 2k/6k to the 10k?

any advice for switching?
There's not like a deck combining process or something, is there?
>>
Has anyone from these threads ever become fluent? Or is it just beginners posting advice from their 3 weeks of learning?
>>
>>141548109
I'm thinking I should switch.
Is the 10k deck better/more accurate than the 6k deck or is it just the organization that's better?
I'm only around 700 cards deep into this deck. So if the other deck is a significant upgrade from this one then I'd rather switch now while I'm not that deep into it.

also do you use the DoJG deck? I'm just trying it out with the default settings and it's pretty unusable atm.

It is matter of matching fields, exporting and importing. An anon provided a diagrammatic set of instructions not long ago.
I'm trying to find it in the archive at the moment.

>also do you use the DoJG deck?
Yeah. It's been the best thing for my Japanese.
>I'm just trying it out with the default settings and it's pretty unusable atm.
Not really sure what you mean, but what I did was split the deck into two seperate decks, based on card types -keeping recognition cards in one deck and the cloze delete cards in another- and review them separately. New cards are reviewed from recognition cards first, reading through everything on the card, followed by the cloze delete cards, testing my recall of what I just read, more or less. On subsequent reviews I review the cloze delete deck first then move onto reviewing the recognition cards after, reading through all the example sentences (but rarely bother re-reading through the notes, unless I really need to). For any new cards on the day, I switch back to the original reviewing order of recognition then cloze.

I've never taken any formal japanese classes, but I spent a few months in Japan and was actually very surprised at how well I could communicate with non-english speakers.
As an example, I went to club mogra there - befriended a group of japanese vocaloid fans - and went after with them to a special miku karaoke thing. They even helped me figure out a capsule hotel to stay in for the night. All without speaking a word of English.
My japanese is still pretty shit though; I'm NOT fluent by any means, but just because you're not fluent doesn't mean what you know isn't helpful/useful.

>Not really sure what you mean, but what I did was split the deck into two seperate decks, based on card types -keeping recognition cards in one deck and the cloze delete cards in another- and review them separately.

I just recently started looking at this deck, and I don't really see a guide for "how to use" the deck.
I want to copy how you learn using this deck but I'm a little bit confused with the process. So you have 2 separate decks one with each card type. What exactly is the point of this? Also, the decks aren't going to talk to eachother, so if you forget a piece of info in deck1, shouldn't deck1 then tell deck2 that you forgot "XX" grammer-fact?

Additionally, it seems as though they give kanji without furigana. I'm really only recently getting around to learning kanji, so my vocab base is much larger than my kanji base. Does not knowing the meaning/pronounciation of a kanji ever get in the way of learning for you?
Also are the grammer points always "comprehensive" - ie, are you easily able to learn/figure out the grammer point if it's something you haven't seen before? (so, like, do you ever get stuck and have to go back to a textbook to figure out the grammer point?)
>>
>>141548701

>I want to copy how you learn using this deck but I'm a little bit confused with the process.
I'll try to explain it better, my bad. Actually, here is the post I made a little while ago explaining how I use it. Tell me if this has enough explanatory power:
https://boards.fireden.net/a/thread/140955669/#140972097

>Additionally, it seems as though they give kanji without furigana. I'm really only recently getting around to learning kanji, so my vocab base is much larger than my kanji base. Does not knowing the meaning/pronounciation of a kanji ever get in the way of learning for you?
I have been taking unknown words as I encounter them and add them to a separate misc vocab deck, but if you are reviewing the cards on a computer there is always the option of copy/pasting the words you don't understand into jisho or some dictionary program. I also study kanji in isolation alongside vocab, so there is that.

>Also are the grammer points always "comprehensive" - ie, are you easily able to learn/figure out the grammer point if it's something you haven't seen before?
Oh yeah man, fucking very much so. The way the examples are laid out and described makes them really easy to understand. I think this is probably the shining point of the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar book series.
>so, like, do you ever get stuck and have to go back to a textbook to figure out the grammer point?
I've yet to come across a textbook which explains these structures as well as the DoJG series, so no.

That wasn't really the point. It's more to the point that it's been that way for over two years and chances are it will stay that way for another two years. ろ usually looks square whereas 口 in a lot of fonts is slightly higher than wider and has little serif markings at the bottom, where the first and second strokes end. That and kanji are often slightly larger than kana in print.

I love how DOBJG uses romanji, but the intermediate and advanced books stopped with it. Is there any way to OCR and automatically convert it? Or maybe automatically convert the anki deck to romanji? Having to learn kanas and kanjis is really killing my motivation, I'm trying to defer it until I become fluent enough in grammar that I can read and have fun.

>>
>>141553965
Learning the kana takes like 4 hours and kanji is best studied alongside grammar. I don't think there's any tool aimed towards helping people learn Japanese without the use of the Japanese writing system simply because it's terribly sub optimal.

The kanas are the grammar. If you're struggling learning the kanas/don't want to learn them, Japanese probably isn't for you. Learning in romanji is only going to slow you down, as well as hurt your ability to see patterns/learn the symbols as you'll look at the roman letters more than the kanas.

Learning Japanese is like climbing a very long staircase. If you try to do too much at the beginning, you won't have much energy and will be hurting later on trying to climb the very same number of steps the next day. It's not about how fast you can climb to a certain numbered step in the beginning, it's about being willing to climb a minimum number of steps everyday. Once you have turned it into a habit, climbing that minimum amount of steps becomes so much easier. Language learning is about being consistent in the end.

The Japanese have a saying: 七転び八起き 「ななころびやおき」 "Fall down 7 times, get up 8"

Don't be afraid to make mistakes! The worst you'll do is fall over, but you can always pick yourself back up. Beginners often start learning the language full of fire and determination, but quickly fizzle out due to fear of making mistakes. Look forward to making mistakes and learning from them instead. Even if climbing just a few steps feels painful, difficult, slow going and unsatisfying in the beginning, if you always stick it out, every day it becomes easier, and you definitely will achieve your goals!

This is what you can look forward to. Intense spoilers btw. Main plot only though, there's much more side content and worldbuilding in the game.

In the village of Monobeno, where the game takes place, exists a barrier that keeps two versions of Monobeno apart, one for humans and youkai that can live with humans, one for youkai that can't or don't want to be in the human world. Same barrier also keeps powerful youkai from outside world from coming to Monobeno.

When the protagonist, Tooru, was to be born, his father learned from divination that both Tooru and the mother will die during childbirth. To prevent this the father called in a good-fortune youkai, the heroine Sumi. To ensure she (and her new umbrella youkai companion Hishakaku) will be able to enter Monobeno, Tooru's father sabotaged the barrier just a little bit. Ultimately this makes Tooru feel guilt for what happens next.

Later Natsuha is born and one day is bullied and wanders into the place where the barrier is maintained using sacred water called お留め水 (word play for 乙女水). She unknowingly drinks it. The purpose of the sacred water is stabilization (of the barrier to its natural state) so it also stabilizes Natsuha to her natural state. This is important cause it at the conclusions of routes it becomes clear Natsuha has hereditary rapid-aging diseasef from her mother, but お留め水 makes sure she ages normally.

But noone initially knows any of this. Tooru and Natsuha's father and mother eventually die and Tooru and Natsuha move to Saitama, where Tooru studies to become a doctor, inspired by his osananajimi Alice's father. The game starts when Tooru and Natsuha return to Monobeno after few years, for various reasons Natsuha's emotional state gets bad, this affects お留め水 and it function and makes Natsuha's rapid-aging disease active again.

It's a meme.

Wanna up your retention? Take a couple kanji you had difficulty with in your anki session, look them up on jisho and maybe even write them down on paper / make mnemonics. This does the same job as RTK, except you only use it for things you have problems with, instead of forcing it for every single babby kanji which is a waste of time.

I'm sure there's something in that sentence that isn't in the N2 list too. Maybe 春先, maybe the use of にして

>>141565450
Keep in mind that if there are 80% who say they don't usually use it that means there are 20% that do still use it. Not saying you should use it yourself but just don't act all confused if someone says さよなら to you (unless it's a pretty girl, in which case they are definitely using it to tell you they never plan to see you again and it is not at all just your social anxiety making you nervous)
>>
>>141565613
Speaking of which, I don't think there is an official vocab list for specific JLPT levels are there? Do you think they have an internal one or do they just arbitrarily choose words they think is approximately the right difficulty?
>>
>>141565759
I'm pretty sure there is an official list, but they are allowed to use some words outside the list. I'm not completely sure how it works I suppose. But I assume they can't have a 読解 paragraph where 40% of the words are outside the list for that level.

Maybe there was just an official list for the old JLPT levels.

ive been studying Japanese for 3 years and I have come to these conclusions:

- anki just makes you think you are learning Japanese. In reality you are learning nothing.

- you should learn on/kun omi and stroke order separately and NOT at the exact same time as vocab (it makes you remember more stuff so harder to focus on one thing)

- don't worry about grammar. It will come naturally from watching lots of anime/ reading

Just checked and that deck seems to be the exact same thing as the one in the CoR, only the comments on the back of the card are removed by default on the CoR one. Not sure if the nihongoshark one follows the 6th edition order or not so that might be another difference.

Speaking of the decks in the CoR, I'm wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between the one in the mega folder with the RTK 6th edition PDF and the one in the "Advanced RTK" mega link. They look to be identical, both have the same number of cards, and the file names only differ in that one has square brackets in it while the other doesn't, but there is a small difference in file size (0.2MB) which suggests that there is indeed some sort of difference between them.

For an RTK deck, should the kanji be on the front or the back?

I ask because the nihongoshark deck has the kanji on the front and the keyword on the back, whereas the deck in the CoR (which seems to be identical in content to the nihongoshark one) has the kanji on the back and the keyword on the front.

Or you can do both, which is what I did. It's a considerable time commitment though, since you end up doing twice as many cards, and writing usually means you spend around 15 seconds per card.
>>
>>141577369
It's perfectly fine to have the kanji on the front if you're primarily looking for recognition.
>>
>>141577369
I did RTK with keyword on the front despite not caring about writing and I now have 95+% retention on vocab. I've heard people say they benefited from doing kanji on the front, but there's no way it'll make you as intimately familiar with the kanji as learning to write it.

Maybe not, but it's way faster. I've still found myself benefiting a great deal from it even without writing.

Some people get 95+ % retention in core without RTK, just figure out what works for you, this is said like 5 times each thread.

>>141577433
The stats represent your kanji knowledge, how is that not relevant in real life? You really let yourself go recently, Jamal.

Readings are best left out of the realm of anki, since that just gives you way too much to memorize. You pick them up fairly easily just by learning multiple words with the same kanji and multiple kanji with the same radicals. Guessing readings for words you haven't seen before becomes simple.

As for word meanings, those are not really viable to guess. You kind of have to look at that the same way RTK looks at kanji. Basically reverse engineer words like 経済 and 業績 using you knowledge of the kanji to help yourself remember them, the same way RTK does radicals in kanji.

You're not supposed to add them to the Core deck, you're supposed to create a "mining deck" for them.

But if for some reason you want to add them to your Core deck, just adjust the field names to match those of your Core deck. You would probably have to rearrange the "Save format" field too, otherwise the information might wind up going in the wrong fields. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

Expression Reading Meaning Furigana Sound

is what i have exactly, i tried and it does not play the sound, also it doesn't fetch the kanji either it just shows the hiragana reading, strange, how is it set up on your card?
>>
>>141576061
What does that mean? How it feels to take a test?
>>
>>141580328
Figured the sound one out, ClipBoard & Save, and Saved audio to collection.media folder.

also changed the encoding to EUC-JP as i'm not sure if UTF-8 has Japanese.
>>
>>141580589
You also have to set it to save audio in anki's media folder.

As for Kanji not showing up, you've probably got your fields wrong in Anki. It should look like this.

That's just not fair. Core2k was supposed to give you the most important words you need. Just how many words do you need for fluency? Is core6k enough?

Lol no, average university students in Japan know 45k vocab(something around that)
2k is the tutorial, you can start reading at this point, but you'll run into a lot of unknown vocabulary very early.

6k should be a very solid core to start reading a lot of stuff, even at 6k you will see new words everywhere. Japanese is unfortunately not fair :( don't give up!

It's 45000 if you e.g. consider 読み and 読む to be separate "words." Obviously they are the same piece of information though, so I don't know what that is supposed to tell anyone.

Also just consider the structure of Japanese, many concepts that are expressed by multiple words in English are one "word" in Japanese. E.g. "special effects" is not it's own English word but it does express a unique unit of information equivalent to the Japanese "word" 特撮.

So basically the 45000 figure is true in a sense but it doesn't really tell the whole story.

It's おせっかー here. The speaker is slurring their words a bit is all. Osekkai -> osekkaa. You'll see this kind of slurring used in manga because it's supposed to be speech, but it won't be in "correct" text.

Why's it horseshit? You could potentially write a lot faster like that as the number of strokes is way lower.

the problem is that it removes the high-density character areas that vowels usually take up, which makes learning new chords much more difficult and error prone

There exists a standard keyboard layout for kana input, but it takes four rows on the keyboard to fit everything so only kids who haven't learned the Latin alphabet yet and old people who are still salty about the war use it.

There also exists specialized kana keyboards that use multiple shift keys to fit all the kana on just three rows, but these are mainly used by lawyers and writers.
