Because they are trying to be something they are not.

It's a really common mistake. Plenty of guys who draw fap-bait just don't embrace what they really are and fuck things up with an attempt at being something "deep".

Gantz is probably the best example. The series should have just been aliens, violence, and boobs, not nihilism and torso Hitler.
