I grew up off the grid in Vernon, and I saw my parents work hard every day, as teachers but also while farming and building a log home. So from a young age I knew the value of hard work.

If I go to Japan will I be expected to bathe nude publicly with Japanese people? Also will they stare at me or bully me for being a foreigner? I have never been particularly comfortable being publicly nude.
>>
>>141192346
Yes. It is common for foreigners to avoid bathing entirely during their stay in Japan for that reason, thus leading to the stereotype of 汚い外人

Hi, I'm translating something to improve my japanese and english (not native) and I'm curious about something I'm currently working on.

The context is: someone is reading an erotic tale from a book.

Now, for example this sentence:
> 耳の後ろから 首筋 鎖骨 肩 吾郎の指かゆっくりと綸子の感覚を鋭敏にして
> 吾郎 Gorou
> 綸子 Rinko

I went with:
> From the back of her ear, to the nape of her neck, to the collabone, to the shoulders, Gorou slowly felt Rinko with his finger... making her sensitive...

I have 3 questions:

1. Is the translation accurate? If I got something wrong, what is it (if you can explain why/how, I appreciate)?
2. Does the original sentence looks more like... poetic, or something from a book? I think it's a bit different from dialogues, but only as it doesn't use too many short forms or abrevs... but I'm not sure.
3. How is the english sentence I came up with? Assuming it's from a book, could/should I do it in another way to make it sound like one?
>>
>>141192866
自慢しておく
>>
>>141193213
don't use ... in prose unless the original material does so

Using ... in the middle of a given section of text in english is considered extremely tacky, people only do it at the beginning/end of paragraphs or between them, or in speech/dialogue

Disable the "run dev edition at the same time as normal firefox" setting and you should automatically be placed in your old firefox profile. If not them enable the profile manager (google about it) and you should be able to select your old profile manually

>>141198064
The only other option I see here, based on the words used, is that the author implies you can call for some panties even if you don't have any yourself, making this trick available for everyone. But that sounds a little ridiculous even in the context of an article about tying panties into imitation ribbons.

I'm not like that and I know Japanese so it's not a very good comparison. But I love Japan too, I guess that's the only similarity we have.
>>141198572
Are you Japanese? I don't see why your opinion matters if that's not the case. I know that Japanese people enjoy anime even more than we westerners do, it's made in their great nation after all.

I cant claim to know what it is but it certainly isnt anime.

What I can say I would like to do though is:
Stay in a ryokan
Visit a conbini
eat local foods
visit a department store

ofc you'd have to go to the touristy places just because well, from what ive experienced it is worth the sight

>>141198682

>Stay in a ryokan

>Visit a conbini

>eat local foods
yeah okay they have some good food but so does every other country
>visit a department store

>>

>>141198568

Not the same guy, but seriously Akihabara isn't even the most interesting part of Tokyo.

Maid cafes are a fun one-time experience that have a big concentration there but there's nothing really unique about Akiba besides that. Taito Gamestation was fun too but the claw machines on the bottom floor are a waste of money. If you like rhythm games you'll like the arcades there.

Other things you could do not in Akiba / the City would be hiking and onsen. You could also go to izakaya and talk to actual japanese people instead of your weeb friends. Have fun anon

>>141199025
If his posts are good enough that people actually feel compelled to argue with him he's improving. This thread has had autistic arguments since long before the spammer came along. So if he stops spamming and starts autistic arguments he's just carrying on the thread tradition.
>>
>>141199029
Sure, I'm happy for you. I'll be sure to visit a konbini and department store for the great cultural insight the provide. Fuck Akihabara.
>>141199056
I'll check out the maid cafes, I'm not really into maids but I guess it will be somewhat anime-like. Any other good places?
I believe I've said earlier that I'm not really interested in going to old Japanese places like Shinto shrines etc, I'm not a religious person.
>>
>>141198799
But both of those posts were me. I rejected the call-for-panties hypothesis because it doesn't make sense logically, and the grammar doesn't seem to support it.
>everyone has a cellphone
>however, panties aren't that widespread
>therefore, pantsu ribbons being a suitable trick for everyone is 断言できる.
If it were the other way around:
>panties aren't that widespread
>however, everyone has a cell phone
>therefore, pantsu ribbons being a suitable trick for everyone is 断言できる.
Plus, the earlier part of the paragraph specifies how you can't just use any type of panties, so ending it with the assertion that it's a trick for everyone to use seems dissonant to the point of being a bad joke or a mistake.
>>

>>
>>141199106
>however, panties aren't that widespread

I don't think there's any way that it's going to make 100% sense though because the entire article is a joke

Which method did you use? and why is a guy saying it is useless? That's a shitposter?
>>
>>141210977
>That's a shitposter?
You sure got that right.

I was using RTK, then I noticed that I was going slow as fuck with RTK and switched to simply brute forcing Kanji with Anki (knowing the radicals helps with this) and blasted through Kanji doing something between 30 and a hundred on good days. Until I reached about 1800 and burnt out from how much I was doing.

What method works for you is a highly subjective matter, I'd just suggest changing from whatever you are using now and pacing yourself better than I did.
>>
>>141210977
>and why is a guy saying it is useless? That's a shitposter?
Yes. For a few days now, he has been spending seemingly his entire day shitposting in these threads with "kanji study is useless".

Don't bother reporting him, the mods ignore these threads so you'll just be wasting your time. If everyone ignores him, he'll probably get bored before too long and leave.

I mean, that's going to work since you obviously remembered 300 Kanji, but it's really fucking inefficient. Use Anki and try combining that either with RTK or some other mnemonics method, or just brute forcing it with anki

well, good luck learning Japanese then.

Not to say that it's not doable, not at all, it's just going to be a whole lot more of a pain and less convenient than computer-aided study.

Though a smartphone can substitute quite fine for almost everything, including Anki. Just sync your stuff when you have wifi and it'll even be backed up.

I know this is a pretty nooby question but, how do you tell when a な after a verb is the casual negative and when it's just a sentence ending な?

For example, would
気が利くな
Be negative or just emphasized?
>>
>>141221629
Negative + emphasized
>>
>>141221629
you just know dude like i just know that one is always negs
>>
>>141221629
な after the dictionary form, like 利くな is either a negative command, as in "do not", or a particle that indicates emotion. In your example it's the latter. I don't know what you mean by casual negative exactly
>>
>>141221770
negative but like not that serious
>>
>>141221708
>>141221727
Fair enough, I did figure it was that from the context but I figured maybe there would be some other tell tale signs

>>141221770
I meant like casual negative imperative sorry, is there no way to tell whether its being used as a command or a particle other than context though?
>>
>>141221862
Actually it is the negative penile form. Which means it's a casual imperative prohibition with additional emphasis.
>>
>>141221862
>is there no way to tell whether its being used as a command or a particle other than context though?
No, but it usually ends up being pretty clear which one it is. Also, if any other particles precede な, it's always the emotive one, I'm pretty sure.

"オレのラブコメヒロインは、パンツがはけない" is probably the easiest LN I've ever read, easier than even oreimo. It's in the CoR. As the title implies, do not expect an intellectual work. It's definitely a "light" novel.

Does anyone have any advice for finding anime subs in Japanese with furigana? I watched The first episode of Heidi and understood well over 60% of it with just over 800 words in core.
>>
>>141231075
No, use visual games instead as they are considered to be a more pure form of art.
>>
>>141231075
the best part is core's first 800 words are in a totally haphazard order

Anime is a lower form of art, this has been the case for several decades now. Just use visual novels and light novels which are considered modern masterpieces.

>>141231731
Quantity doesn't matter in high art, the soul of the creator is the only thing that matters. One Japanese VN artist is worth a thousand chink animators. The fact that the artist draws the VN by himself already makes him superior.

>>141231894
You mean 10 years of half-assing the language. How much did you actually study?
>>
>>141232228
Japanese people don't make anime, Chinese and Korean "people" make it nowadays. Sadly there's no spirit of Japan left in anime...
Poorly made Chinese animation can never hope to rival true Japanese art like Muramasa, Hanahira, Fate/Stay Night, 僕はオタクである and オレの妹のパンツはかわいい.
>>
>>141232189
Of course not, flashcards are for retaining already-learned information, not learning new things.

A better translation for A's first line might be "I'm thinking I'm gonna be doing some surfing this summer", rather than using the word "trying". It seems he has already started previous to this conversation.

Incidentally this also explains the reason why in VNs, MC has his pick of girls to choose from, while all other male characters are single losers.

I used to watch this show haha, I remember this old one from the 90s where a girl confessed to her crush who helped her when she got bullied by the boys. The boy got yelled at too due to misunderstanding, and the girl felt bad about it. The way how she confessed her love was the cutest part of the entire episode.

it's a flashcard program that drills you on information

the difference from paper flashcards is that it keeps flashcards that you're learning away relative to how much it thinks you know them, so that you can spend more time on cards you don't know
