No money in it unless it's a comedy. American cartoons are pretty top tier comedy.

Also you're ignoring a lot of great animated movies that were made using computer animation instead of traditional animation.

Even then you're ignoring some older great movies/shows- most to the Classic Disney library, the Batman Animated series, golden age Simpsons, ect.

They weren't constrained by the wests cultural views on what comics and cartoons can be.

In the west, it's viewed to be for children - extremely safe and for children. There exists the adult cartoons such as family guy, simpsons and such but those too are also quite simply animation wise and are generally only "mature" in terms of humor.

That and anybody doing animation is more or less comes from Calarts which really promotes a "cartoony" style which is basically only good for kids shows.

>>
>>141189839
>because the west focuses on other things to develope

Basically this. The west is still fairly dominated by the idea that cartoons are for silly stuff (Thanx to Walt Disney and his silly melodies) and therefore are only good for kids or for grotesque shit that makes you laugh.

The same demographic that in Japan is interested in the more serious anime in the west is exclusively interested in live action TV series.

Things like Game of Thrones, Buffy, Lost, Battlestar Galactica or Firefly could have as well been cartoons as there are anime that aren't really that much different in structure and scope. However if they were animated instead of live actions they would have reached a different demographic.

In the end anyone who is aiming to provide video entertainment for that demographic, be it producers, directors or writers, will rather invest their efforts to produce live action TV series rather than cartoons.

>>141191240
This, essentially. It's a difference in attitude towards media. Cartoons are for the kids, and for adult TV, you get your 30 Rock or CSI, etc. There are exceptions, but it's not that the west can't make 'good' cartoons, it's just that they don't.

>Suffer from Falnderization
But they don't, seriously how much have you watched?

The characters change so much from episode to episode that it's impossible to Falnderize them. Also if anything they're less parodies of themselves then they started as.

Stan use to be just "stupid republican CIA agent", Haley was "Liberal daughter" and the rest were just generic Seth characters to advance the plot. By seasons 4 gained a lot of depth or at the very least some variety in their motivations and actions.
>>
>>141191529
It doesn't take a westaboo to be into Frozen, Japan was obsessed with that shit along with probably most of the world.
>>
>>141191705
Disney has never been realistic. They've just had a lot more time to work on cartoons and polish. They used to spend hours painting backgrounds on huge fucking canvases. Japanese animators do the same thing but they're limited to small paper and watercolor/gouache under a strict time limit, and the backgrounds are usually outsourced anyway so there's no internal direction.
>>
>>141191648
>>141191643
The West really just doesn't see cartoons as hilarious.

I've dated multiple girls who I can't even get to watch animated comedies because they just don't like animated stuff. Animation has a huge stigma here.

>>141191635
It's not that the animation is bad, it's just that the art style doesn't lend itself to serious subject mater and cape stuff will never be taken that seriously.
>>
>>141191944
*serious, not hilarious.

Thanks again autocorrect.
>>
>>141191798
They've changed some, sure. Probably just because sticking with the tropes began to hinder the writing process.

I wouldn't consider them as characters in the sense that they evolve and change over time due to consequences or legitimate development based off plot. You can generally pick any episode from american dad and still be familiar with the characters. generally. And it's like that for almost every western adult cartoon.

I would say Archer is an examply of western animation breaking the mold in that sense actually. Because so much plot happens in that show that Archer is not the same guy he was in episode 1 to the latest episodes. Things don't reset with every episode.

I couldn't put my finger on why I liked Archer so much, despite it going on for 7 seasons now. That's it. Things change. Characters, settings, stakes. It's not the same show it was 6 seasons ago.

>>141192271
Storyboarding, likely.
>>
>>141189639
They don't age. It's either reboot or remake after sales start to decline or they stubbornly keep the cast same age for decades.
>>
>>141192054
I don't really mean that the American Dad cast developed as characters in the sense where they evolved in universe, I mean that the writers started to change them so they court avoid the same old tropes.

Which is to say they didn't suffer from flanderization. If they had Stan would be an even bigger Republican big government CIA stooge. Which he really isn't. He's a kind of whacky father who's also sometimes the serious voice of reason who works for the CIA when it's convenient to the plot.

Archer actually suffered from a lot of Flanderization during Archer Vice, and even a little in Season 6, though mostly for side characters like Krieger.

>Animation has a huge stigma here.

I wouldn't say that at all. I think animation in the west is still very popular, especially with the mid-twenties demographic. Pretty much all my normie friends religiously watch shows like South Park, the Simpsons or shit that airs on Adultswim. In fact proof that animation in the west is alive and well is the rise of Adultswim. The thing is it never took off outside of comedy shows. So westerners that don't like to watch that genre kinda automatically write off animation as just that. For older people all animation ever was was either Disney or looney toons. My parents love old disney movies for example, but for them it's still just "kids stuff".

I'd say there's a very large adult audience for animation in the west, but all the channels ever produce for adult audiences are comedy shows like Rick and Morty.

Seriously though, my gf likes anime (terrible harem and shounenshit, but it's animation) and liked Zootopia when I dragged her to it, so I don't think the stigma against animation is all encompassing.

I wish more SOLs followed that dynamic.

>comfy as fuck without being boring or plotless

>>
>>141192764
>not seeing it with Archer
Really? Vice was basically just "Archer screws up way more then before due to stupid stuff because apparently this is funny". Krieger basically became "unstable scientist who might be Hitler's clone and is terrible at his job".

Season 6 saw Kerieger become an even bigger parody of himself, and for Cheryl and Pam to take a few steps back from their character development back to their wild and zany antics.

It may not be the worst case, but it's there.

>>141192972
I wouldn't say all encompassing but of the four girls I've last dated three were pretty much all against animated stuff. With maybe Frozen and more recently Zootopia as a rare exception. Disney movies tend to always be an exception to the rule.

I mean fuck I work with a bunch of Army Rangers and they all loved the fuck out of Frozen.

>I wouldn't say all encompassing but of the four girls I've last dated three were pretty much all against animated stuff. With maybe Frozen and more recently Zootopia as a rare exception. Disney movies tend to always be an exception to the rule.

Maybe it's just because she's black, and blacks are the biggest fucking weebs in the U.S., but I haven't seen that. I guess for more normalfag girls that would be the case though. Animation rocks, I don't get how people couldn't like it.

>I mean fuck I work with a bunch of Army Rangers and they all loved the fuck out of Frozen.

Well Frozen had two of the top waifus of the century so I would hope so.
>>
>>141189639
I wouldn't say anime is better, but the anime industry is much larger and much more diverse.
A big part is the cost of making cartoons here in the West and the risk associated with it. Another big factor is the stigma of cartoons being for kiddies, which is slowly going away. These largely stem from the "Dark Age of Animation" which ranged from, depending on who you ask, the mid 50's to '89. The death of the theatrical short, several flops from Disney and over saturation via Hannah Barbara and Ruby Spears all culminated in a much more cautious AAA industry.
>>
>>141193349
>Animation rocks, I don't get how people couldn't like it.

That's true. I wasn't saying you didn't like animation or anything, I just don't get how more people can't like it. Shit is nice on a basic level.

>They didn't like it for the wiafus

Aside from them it wasn't that great in my opinion, aside from the animation and character designs. I guess if you haven't seen much animation then it could come off as great though.

To be fair we aren't exactly animation experts, even if we do have a fair amount of guys who like anime.

That being said I think it was mostly the music and girly stuff. Guys also loved Pitch Perfect. Again I have no clue why. I'm sure a psychologist would have a field day talking about "hyper masculinity" and an "attraction to feminine values" but whatever.
>>
So I know the west views animation as something for kids. so how did this happen. and why does this notion still persist to this day?

It largely came about after Hannah Barbara made it big. Scooby Doo's popularity flooded the market with mindless copies aimed at children. Then the 80's rolled around and we got hit with a shitton of toy commercials like He-Man and GI-Joe. It's just sort of stuck around, likely due to an attempt to seem mature.
>>
>>141194226
Frankly, they deserve it. The West is superior in pretty much other medium and has the most potential for creative work, but they drop the ball on comics and cartoons.

>>
>>141194290
I remember around the late 90s, or maybe the Animation Ghetto Age if I'm not mistaken, where some animators tried to bypass censors by insinuating something while covering it up(Ren & Stimpy, Spongebob), and this is probably the last time I watched Western Cartoons. Why did the movement stopped all of a sudden?
>>
>>141194498
Japanese classes, seriously. There were multiple cute girls in the ones I've been to. Not models of course, but if you're a weeb you're probably not a prize either.

There is a mid way between extreme normalfag and weeaboo though, even the mostly slightly 'alternative' girls are open to /co/ shit. My sister is a super popular, attractive cheerleader and she likes Archer.
>>
>>141189639
Animation for western television has historically been kids shows. Hannah Barbera especially helped create that perception.

Adult animation beyond adult comedies tends to bomb too. It's very hard to sell thanks to the stigma of "why isn't this just live action," and Cartoon Network doesn't really do action shows anymore after there last few failed to sell as many toys as Ben 10.

Movies can be more varied but these days it's largely a flood of CGI Pixar and Dreamworks knock-offs in America. Europe is a lot more varied and willing to experiment.

Things are slowly changing though. The current generation of tweens is really into shows like Gravity Falls and Steven Universe that pull in story elements and have a deeper lore to them, so a market for action shows and narrative centric cartoons is slowly being fostered. There's talk of shit like Young Justice making its way to Netflix too, so they might find an audience on streaming sites.
>>

Hiding "adult" stuff in cartoons hasn't gone away. It's always been there and always will be, but as for why the Renaissance died there are a few reasons. A big part of it was the cultural shifts that occurred following tragedies such as Columbine and 9/11. Censorship was cranked up as a result. Another thing that contributed to the fall was everyone's rush to copy Ren & Stimpy. The late 90's and early 2000's were filled with, largely horrible, gross out humor shows.

A lack of freedom of expression is not what's holding the west back, the best anime isn't necessarily full of tits and ass. Take Gankutsuou for an example- it's based on western literature, it has artistic merit, and it's a cartoon. The first two are obviously acceptable in the west, but the latter isn't because of stigma about animation unrelated to prudish attitudes.

Sex sells though, and marketability is the most important factor.

Because of tradition. A western comic artist may make 1 story of 43 pages in a year, doing most of the work himself.

Manga is created by a team, similar to a movie production. They also produce somewhere around 14 pages a week if I remember it right. This allows for more manga in a shorter time.

More practice makes better results.

Then this is transferred to cartoon/anime.

Not sure where you got the number 43 from. Comic book artists work with multiple books at a time for at least a dozen issues each. Also, assistants are usually not credited in manga.

>>141200155
Watch the later seasons when it became less about that and more about what Family Guy should be.
>>
>>141191643
The funny thing is that if they could change that stupid mentality, it would be much cheaper for them to produce a story like Game of Thrones, for instance. And the battles would look a lot more epic.
>>

>>
>>141200113

The "team" only does menial work that even a kid can help the artist with, plus digital artists don't need help at all because softwares do the job.
If anything you can say that manga can be a more solid work simply because there are less people the author has to deal with to create the final product.

Most western cartoons pander to children and bull dykes with what little that panders to actual adults being trash like Family Guy with a few exceptions like early Simpsons, early South Park, and the entirety of King of the Hill. Anime tends to pander to a wider demographic with stuff like Gundam having things that appease the tastes of both kids and adults while still maintaining some semblance of integrity instead of being braindead shit like western stuff with the exception being harem anime because fuck harem anime it's always the same boring shit.
>>
>>141200325
>less people the author has to deal with
If only manga authors were more willing to stick to their guns and not let publishers and marketing concerns walk over them. The bastards try to forcibly mold shonen manga into the same damn form: fights, fights, fights.

Bleach was good for maybe a few books, then it lost it's soul and became an endless series of lazy ass pull battles and new characters.

I like starting new mangas, you never know what you get in the beginning. But very soon they all end up the same.

>>
>>141189639

Simple. They care about their craft. Not that they have a choice. They live on a small island crammed with people. They simply have no place to shoot live-action TV/Movies like America can and they're addicted to manga (as everyone should be).

America has Disney though, and you're a fool to not appropriate historically what they've contributed to animation.
>>
Old Disney movies looked very smooth and clean since they were all animated in 1s with their unlimited budget but they were never really that impressive or complex. The intricate and skillfully animation Japan has put out over the years with a fraction of the budget of fairly outweighs what the west once did.
>>
>>141201780
Try and follow along. It might be challenging, but I'll try and come down to your level.

Snow White and Fantastia are animation.
They have excellent animation on display.
They are better animated than anything Japs ever made.

Killing Joke and Watchmen are graphic novels/animation.
They have excellent writing, pacing, and character development.
They are better written than anything Japs ever made.

So, the West has better animation in terms of visuals, and writing.
What else is there? You'll never, ever, ever have a Japanese animation studio or personality as influential to the industry, let alone the world, as Disney was. Ever.

No, the same cannot be said about comics, especially if by comics we're talking about American comics. The fact that you think the two are comparable in this regard just shows you have no idea what you're talking about.

>Oh, so what fairytale quality did I magically forget?
Character design
Lighting and shading
Camera work
Complexity of movement
Variety

>Disney's art style was taken by literally every anime ever made.
Tezuka was initially inspired by some American cartoon characters, and his designs had an influence on other manga artists, but manga/anime characters very clearly don't look anything like Disney or other American characters.

>>141202140
The only area in which Disney excels over anime is the smoothness of the animation, which is more a matter of time and money than skill. It's also a matter of priorities, as anime favors detailed drawings over smooth animation.
>>
>>141202080
Snow White and Fantasia camera shots are fairly simple, as well as the character animation. There's no use of tracking or rotating shots that could make the animation way more complex since you have to deal with matching perspective and background animation, something anime with high budget does a lot. As I said here >>141201819 Disney animation looks so smooth because it's done in 1s, something anime doesn't have the luxury to do since the budget required would skyrocket, but the complexity of animation techniques Japanese use is much more impressive.

You consider this "western animation"?? Yeah sure it's animated but it may as well not be, it's just a cartoon version of Seinfeld or similar.

I want to bring up another main issue as I see it that has crippled western cartoons, originating in comics.

>super villains

>chacters that can't die (and no development)

These 2 points have crippled western fiction horribly. Growing up with comics that play along these lines it was extremely satisfying when I first read Modesty Blaise and they actually killed the crooks.

Just take a look at Dragonball - they grow up, get married, have kids, kids grow up, people die... bad guys get killed or turn out not so bad after a while.

It's ok for Ducktales to have the character they have of course, because they all play a role in the world and what they do is focused on exploration outside most of the time. It's also not an endlessly running show and they did add new characters along the way that weren't there in that universe at first.

But look at Superman or Spiderman. It's the same story over and over again, and the same frustrating theme with Lex Luthor being impossible to kill off early.

There is nothing that can fill the void of romance like anime and manga.
Western cartoons and comics don't come close, and sitcoms are just full of cheating and sex. No love buildup showing a cute girl going head over heels for a guy. Just full blown fucking, throwing people away, etc. It's shit.

Anime and manga have such a wide diversity of genres and settings. West comics are fucking 80% capeshit at least and all cartoons aside from a couple (Archer, venture Bros, few more) are just kiddy slapstick.

Western cartoons seek shows that are good to watch in reruns, so a lot of the popular shows get to only 52 episodes. Since they are aiming to become reruns, western animation mostly consists of slice of life stories, with little to no character development, or the never ending battle with the villain, who will always get away at the end of the episode. The few stories that are allowed to tell a story, are usually highly regarded. However, western animation falls into the trap of relying mostly on ratings and toy sales. When a show is highly critically rated but has no toy sales, it will get cancelled. When a show is crap but has high viewer ratings, or high toy sales it will continue to be produced. Very rare occasion occur when a show is highly critically rated and and has either high toy sales or high viewer ratings.

One thing I thought about a few days ago, western animation fans treat animation just as a gimmick. Like "omg moving drawing SO EPIC". It's not treated as a way of making art, it's just the novelity of moving drawings that are meant to draw people's attention. Animation is not a medium to deliver art. Maybe it worked in the 1920s, but it isn't enough any longer.

Also
