I'm having difficulty in finding a good adaptation for this line on End of Evangelion:

三度の報いの時が 今

The problem is that the line is obviously ambiguous, and what does "mukui" refers to is unclear.

Some older translations have used both retribution and return, such as "The time of the Third Return has come"
I like return better, but my QC doesn't.

I thought that "Mukui" might have been a stilted way to say "kareu" because Seele always says things in a cocky way and the following line is used in the Japanese Lyrics of the music theme played in the movie:

無へと還ろう
"All returns to nothing"

Could that be it, or mukui and the line definitely are not referring to a "return to nothing"?

Thanks a lot.
>>
>>141128381
>I'm having difficulty in finding a good adaptation for this line on End of Evangelion:
This isn't a translation thread, because translators frequently come in here and start arguments, but if you're having trouble with japanese itself rather than english word choice, I'm sure someone might be willing to help you.

>>
Oh a new topic...

I've posted this in the previous one and I'm still unconvinced, or rather, there were two options that seemed right, so I'd like to ask here again.

The context is a boyfriend and girlfriend are discussing, the boyfriend wants to do something weird, she doesn't want anymore, and the dialogue is as follows:

> Boy: Hey let's do this (blindfold)
> Girl: No way! I refuse because <reasons>
> Boy: But this is nothing compared to what we've done before...
> Girl: The problem IS what we've done before!
> Girl: 確かに何でもしていいからって迫ったのは私よ?
> Girl: But there are limits! Every time I agree to it, always we get rash and I end up miserably

This sentence, I got two meanings:
確かに何でもしていいからって迫ったのは私よ?
(certainly) (anything) (doing is okay) (because) (quote) (urged/pressed) (was) (me?)

an /a/non gave: "Certainly, I (might've) encouraged you by doing everything"

another /a/non gave: "Do you think everything is okay because I'm the one who gets subjugated?"

I kinda doubted the meaning of this verb 迫, that meaning isn't on the dictionary I'm using (nor google) so I went to a japanese dictionary (even though I'm still bad at it and had to slowly translate it)

To harass with pressure. Push/pressure with authority.

Which seems to fit "subjugation". The other option is also believable to a stretch. Can someone help me pointing what am I doing wrong and how can I get the meaning of that phrase?
>>
しゃせいがだいすき
>>
>>141135238
And I think I even translated it wrongly, it's supposed to be "the pressure from harassment" or something like that?
>>
>>141135238
But are wrong, though.

It's that definition, "to press". She pressed him saying "何でもしていいから", "you can do whatever". So she was basically like "do it faggot" before, but now she changed her mind
>>
>>141135238

>>
>>141127273
>But っぴ is normally used at the end of people's names so what does it mean here?

>>
>>141135977
Romaji is actually ideal for a book that focuses on speaking.
Kanji is a crutch that you don't have in the spoken language. You have to be able to tell homonyms apart without them.
>>
>>141136232
>Kanji is a crutch that you don't have in the spoken language. You have to be able to tell homonyms apart without them.
This is true, but that is only an argument against kanji. You can have everything in kana without going full romaji never go full romaji

Also, it is still better to learn the words with kanji at first. A beginner textbook on speaking is going to be focusing on grammar not on trying to teach the meanings of jukugo.

日本で最近では米を昔のように研がなくていいとよく聞きます。精米機の質が上がり、軽く洗うだけでよく、研ぎすぎると栄養分まで抜けてしまうとか、必要以上に削れてしまうとかメディアでも言っていますが、アメリカ産の日本米でも同じことが言えるのでしょうか?アメリカの土で育て、アメリカの精米機を使っているので、やはりゴシゴシ研ぐべきなのでしょうか?

"Recently its often heard that polishing rice the old way is good. The rice husker's quality is increasing, often a slight wash is enough, washing aggressively leaches nutrients, the rice is overpolished, says the media. However can the same be said of America produced Japanese rice? Raised in American soil, polished with American machine, its shouldent be overpolished right?

What does 精米機の質が上がり mean? "The rice husker's quality is increasing"?

What does the trailing だけでよく mean? Is it just adv form of だけでいい?

yes
>What does the trailing だけでよく mean? Is it just adv form of だけでいい?
Not as an adverb. Just think of it as だけでいい。 with the period after it

Also you made some huge mistakes with the first/last sentence so my advice to stick to comic books is serious.
>>
>>141136934
>Recently its often heard that polishing rice the old way is good
Recently its often heard that you don't have to polish rice the old way
>its shouldent be overpolished right?
It's saying that you should perhaps polish rice produced in America roughly, as American soil is different from Japanese soil, and similarly for American 精米機, leading to different rice.
>What does 精米機の質が上がり mean? "The rice husker's quality is increasing"?
The machines' quality, efficiency. Yes.
>What does the trailing だけでよく mean? Is it just adv form of だけでいい
It just adds a simple "and" here, continuing the sentence, like for 上がり

I have to say, I always said one doesn't need native support when self-studying, but asking natives questions directly as an "advanced" (long-term, experienced, whatever) learning incredibly elucidating. I came across an idiom and had no idea what it meant, so I asked a native and they hadn't ever seen it before. I came across a really hard line in a VN, asked a native about it, and they didn't really understand it either (we were both without context since it was a screenshot). I think perhaps a valuable perspective to have as a late-term learner is that not even natives perfectly understand everything they come across, they need dictionaries, google, and so on as well.

Honestly more likely that they just don't give a shit and keep reading. That's what I do half the time and I'm not native. Like, you just move on and don't even think about the fact that you maybe didn't fully understand every nuance of the line you just read

>>141139979
>it is exceedingly rare to come across any English I don't know.
Nobody frequently comes across words/idioms in their native language that they don't know. If they did come across them frequently, then they would be learning them frequently, and therefore would quickly get to the point where they knew them all and didn't come across them frequently anymore.

The "return to nothing" is a recurring motif in the Episode in question.

>isnt it like self explanatory hence the original tls you referenced
I don't really get if this is even a question, but no, it's not self-explanatory, "Third repay" doesn't make sense given the context. I'm simply asking if "mukui" could mean return without the "repay" connotation.

Been using it ages with no problems. I'm guessing you didn't read the warning about not installing the huge infinality-bundle-fonts-extra package.

>WARNING: DO NOT attempt to install the entire infinality-bundle-fonts or infinality-bundle-fonts-extra group. Unless you know for sure you need any of the fonts available there, you will only unnecessarily clutter your hard drive and decrease performance of the font cache. ibfonts-meta-extended should suffice in most, even very complex, use scenarios. Besides, several font families are available in multiple formats (T1, TTF, OTF): trying to install all font packages will lead to unresolvable package conflicts. If this is the case, you should always use only ONE format per family.

Ah, I see. Thanks.

What about 黒の車 and 黒い車 though? Cars don't output anything black, so 黒/黒い could only refer to the external appearance of the car, right? When it comes to things like cars, is there any difference between saying 黒のX and 黒いX?
>>
>>141160806
When did you go outside last time? Cars don't output anything black huh? Sounds cool.
>>
>>141161062
I don't know what car you have, but if something black is coming out of the exhaust then there's something seriously wrong with it. This isn't the 1960s anymore. Exhaust emissions should be clear.
>>
>>141161135 (submitted too early)
But if you want to be pedantic, then fine. Let's change the example to 赤の車 and 赤い車.

Really? I always look up words I'm not familiar with (or even words I'm familiar with but curious what the actual dictionary definition is compared to what I've learned of it through exposure and context) when I'm reading, one of the bigger reasons I was happy to switch over to e-readers when they came along since it made that so easy.
>>

>>
>>141161447
You know the thing that comes out of the exhaust pipe? It can be black, you have to be an idiot not to consider this when writing "Cars don't output anything black". Maybe your language deals with colors differently, we call that black in English.
>>
>>141161611
Again, if something black is coming out of your exhaust then you car is fucked.

Exhaust fumes should be light grey, or even clear in very modern cars.
>>
>>141161520
いいくそを食べました。

>>
>>141161611
Quit bullying that poster, he's from Europe where cars are mandated by law to emit clear exhaust smelling of mint, and legacy provisions allow old vehicles to continue emitting faint blue exhaust smelling of curry and/or acetone.
Also, depictions of cars in visual and written media are edited so as to emit any depiction or mention of black smoke, in compliance with a European directive intended to reduce people's acceptance of polluting cars.
>>
>>141161684
We are not talking about what cars should or shouldn't do. They do emit black stuff out of their exhaust pipe, that's a pretty likely situation. It means you are an idiot for writing your post.
>>
>>141161852
But in what context would a car be called 黒の車 by virtue of its exhaust color?
>>
>>141161852
Just admit you are wrong and stop posting. Exhaust fumes are grey or clear. The only exception is if there is a serious fault.

You wouldn't say that computers emit fire just because it's possible that if something goes seriously wrong with one then it might.
>>
>>141161912
We can continue the discussion on various possible uses of Japanese grammar after you admit that you are stupid for writing "Cars don't output anything black"
>>
>>141161611
its black only if the engine is burning oil
thats quite bad news, but it doesn't mean the event never occurs
in other words, if you describe it to a japanese mechanic, he'll be more concerned than a simple descriptive 'mine is the black one' vs 'my is the black emitting one'
>>
>>141163093
Now you bring in Japanese mechanics into the mix. We can talk about them all you want after you stop deflecting and admit your stupidity.

You can't actually get a teaching job in Japan, the industry is entirely about hiring a native babysitter so the school looks better on paper. The value of having female presence in the research field will increase, i think.

Why 気付き始めている? What is starting?

desu its pretty sexist to say that females are the only ones who have experiences with goods.

are they implying that females do all the housework?

based japan for not capitulating to the west.
>>
>>141186317
i mean yeah your fate if youre not a driven motivated woman is pretty frickin bleak

being a housewife is pretty much 理想郷

さて街中をうろつくにあたり調べたところ、流川・薬研堀・紙屋町・八丁堀といったあたり一帯が中心的な街になっているようですね。その辺を歩くことにしました。

Alright now, when I wandered the downtown checking out the area, regions called 流川・薬研堀・紙屋町・八丁堀 were lined with regular stores it seems. I decided to walk around there.

あたり is 辺り in this context right?
>>
>>141186532
i mean what other atari would it be? the jaguar?
>>
>>141126057
つ becomes し in -ます form right? I feel really stupid right now but たします sounds wrong

So I was playing Fate Stay Night and I was really curious about this text and its meaning

鶴翼欠落不
心技泰山至
心技黄河渡
唯名別天納
両雄共命別

and

「―――鶴翼(しんぎ)、欠落ヲ不ラズ(むけつにしてばんじゃく)」
「―――心技(ちから)、泰山ニ至リ(やまをぬき)」
「―――心技(つるぎ)、黄河ヲ渡ル(みずをわかつ)」
―――唯名(せいめい)、別天ニ納メ(りきゅうにとどき)。
―――両雄(われら)、共ニ命ヲ別ツ(ともにてんをいだかず)
>>
>>141186966
流川・薬研堀・紙屋町・八丁堀といったあたり is saying something like "something like 流川・薬研堀・紙屋町・八丁堀" or something like that

it resembles those other places in that 一帯が中心的な街になっているようですね

…繁華街は見ているだけで楽しいですね。夜は近寄れませんし、商売人、お客さんともに迷惑になっちゃうので写真のひとつも撮れませんが。

Why would it being evening or not affect how much of a bother he is?

I'm mostly wondering why the translation is so fucked up.
>>
>>141187740

Just enable the profile selector and select your old firefox profile
Google instructions tho it's not in an obvious location

>>
>>141191407
Oh, first, disable the setting that gives the developer edition a separate profile from standard firefox
