It was only retarded from the viewpoint of hardcore fans of his previews work.
From a business perspective it was brilliant.
It had all the elements of popular anime (harem, any possible kind of female (robot, alien, tranny, clone, normal, milf), kind of a school / education setting, teens, mechas, romance...) as well as the benefit of being done by a semi popular author in a semi popular universe. I never looked it up, but he most likely earned more on this than all of his previous work together.

Going to get a lot of flak but...Tokyo Ghoul. Im getting to many same faces and the black and white colors doesnt help when the main cast have the same fucking face and hair. Also story all over the fucking place.
