I miss the directing in S1, the action scenes and sound effects were top notch. It's a bit disappointing how the animal facts were reduced to a single slide. Surely they're able to cram in some narration during the action scenes like in S1 and not to mention those recaps are unnecessary.

Good point. It's a complete waste of the narrator, really. Also, S2 still seems to be lacking any kind of atmosphere--the blander visuals and stale directing are definitely big reasons for that.

Yeah, they hit some good points in his episodes but there really shouldn't have been three of 'em. 10 probably could've been used as a breather episode for the other plots to develop rather than kinda rushing to get to Keiji and Komachi fighting their respective opponents at the very end.

I don't think they should've spent so much time dwelling on how he met his wife and such either, the manga hit me harder with the ambiguity.

This episode didn't manage to top the emotional impact of episode 4 from S1 for me though.

The first OVA was definitely disappointing to me in a lot of respects, especially since it was a Hamasaki storyboard and I expected way more.

The second one was actually really good and was probably had the best animation of anything Liden had done for the series. It just sucks that they skipped out on the fucking Thien bible quotes when they left them in for Adolf's episode. But yeah, it was stupid to relegate all of BUGS II to just two OVAs, they just ended up being highlight reels or something.

It's decent to pretty good so far, though I said in the thread before that it might be getting by solely on the strength of the chapters that it's adapted so far. I might have been a bit hasty in condemning its lack of atmosphere but yeah, it's really the directing that's holding S2 back for me, as are the OST and the simplified character designs, which as of late don't seem to be taking advantage of some of the animation talent they've brought on board.

For all the weird omissions/compression/cutting out S1 did I think it kept to the spirit of the manga quite well (even with the lack of colour and edgy filters everywhere) and I hope S2 manages to do the same. I'm not sure if it'll run into similar pacing issues and production disasters though.

Well, you're not wrong there. Director, assistant director and character designer have all had long careers at Madhouse, and MADBOX was also involved in the visuals as well.

It's not that the quality's gone down necessarily, season 1 had a lot of awful moments where the character designs were ruined the moment they started moving and some outsourced episodes (like 7) just looked like absolute garbage. I think S1 actually had two people in charge of character designs, and some of the early episodes had extra people credited to help out with them since I guess they were too much work for a small studio like Liden. Most of S1 needed a crapton of second key animation and animation directors to correct all the inconsistencies, even when the show didn't really have all that much movement to begin with.

The difference in S2 seems to be that TYO Animations are helping out; you can see them credited for inbetweening work and second key animation, but I'm not sure what else they've helped with. The rest of the staff have been completely replaced (Hamasaki leaving is probably the biggest factor) so that probably explains a lot of the visual changes. I also spotted Liden's Kyoto studio (which is made up of ex-KyoAni people and is good) in the credits so that's probably helping them out a lot as well. I assume this will be better produced than before but I don't know.

Episode 1's animation wasn't really bad, it was just undercut by the lack of impact/sound direction.
