I will be succint in explaining the series' message.

Shinji realizes that human relationships are not perfect, in fact they are difficult. Instrumentality offers everyone a chance to live life the way the want life to be. However, Shinji rejects this since the people he interacts with are not the damaged, fucked up people he met.

Shinji's despair burgeoned from his loneliness, yet he decides that he will give the people he met a shot anyway; if he can learn to truly communicate with others, he won't be lonely anymore. This alone makes life worth living, because even if people hurt each other there is a genuine oneness that binds us.

I haven't watched EVA in years. From what I remember it was a huge story about Shinji progressively getting more and more fucked up in the head only to finally calm down by convincing himself that it was okay to fail when it matters most as long as you accept the consequences of said failures.

Shinji couldn't save the planet, he repeatedly ran away from all of his problems, and he failed to help his friends when they needed him most. As a result everything he ever knew or loved was destroyed and he was left completely alone with the exception of Asuka whom Shinji tried to murder because now that he was outside of instrumentality he suddenly lost his apparently fragile inner peace and chose to blame someone else instead of recognizing his own problems.

There was a lot of symbolism, and there was a lot of internal strife. The characters were all well written and the story was unique, but the story was never meant to have a positive message.

The story is just a depressing failure extended out for an entire series + a movie. The only way you can get a positive message out of any of it is to assume the message of the story is "Don't do what Shinji did. Shinji is an example of what weakness will bring to you."

Evangelion has several high points though. Right after Asuka shows up, the series is pretty slice of life, romcom-eqsue. Episode 12 I think in particular is the highest point, where the Children and Misato go out for ramen or something.

Evangelion isn't all depressing, even if that's what you got out of it. I would apply that criticism for something like 5cm per second. Fuck that movie. Any sort of positive outlook in that film is just an afterthought. Depressing for the sake of being depressing. Suffering without catharsis.
