Back in 2009 all I wanted was a "sakuga community" and now thta there is one I'm critical of it

it's fun for a while to learn the 'tells' of the animators and recognize them based on that but ultimately animation is more than that

The closest thing to a perfect anime is a gesamtkunstwerk. Which is why I take issue with "LoGH is the best anime ever" or whatever.
Hakkenden ep 1's visuals are a feast to an animator or "sakuga fan" but a mess to someone who focuses heavily on the work as a whole

that's why IMO knowledge of ALL mediums is required to be a great critic of the huge conglomerate of mediums that is anime or games
if you know nothing about literature you'll have to pull reasons out of your ass to decide if an anime is "badly plotted" or "well plotted"
if you don't know about music u might hear a generic pop song with every stock chord progression in the book & think it's revolutionary
same goes for film. if someone who sucks at knowing when films came out they might call Tezuka's Phoenix V2 a 2001: A Space Odyssey ripoff.
basically what I'm saying is, if you want to be knowledgeable about anime, YES, watching a lot of it helps. It can be your main medium.
don't watch generic harem crap you hate just so you can bitch about it online; study anime history, just like the other mediums
watch what is important, read what is important; because anime and manga are very, very closely linked.

That said, you've made your own definition as to what an anime is. For most people, it is simply just a visual story, in which that definition LoGH might for them be the best anime ever.

Even though movies like 3.33 are by a large portion of it's audience absolutely reviled, most of them agree that the animation or visuals are good.

What's your opinion on that?
