The overarching point of Evangelion is that people are unable to communicate their feelings and thoughts to others, but we have to try nonetheless, even at the end of the world. This is honestly bluntly explained in the final episode, where Shinji realizes that everyone makes inaccurate perception of others and others make inaccurate perceptions of him. He comes to the realization that if everyone can't understand anyone, no one's opinion matters.
