In Setsuna's case she determined that her strengths were treachery and deceit. She used them to her fullest but could not defeat Haruki's waifu.

In truth she played her cards perfectly. She prevented Kazusa from using her strength, she protected her own weakness, she exploited Kazusa's weakness, and she used her own strength. Despite everything though she still lost. As such it would not be inaccurate to say that it was never a fair fight in the first place. The odds were impossibly stacked against her.
