I remember the consensus from the pre-air of first 3 episodes is that the FemMC is really cool/cute, it looks really shiny and movie theater quality (probably because those episodes were planned that way for the pre-screening in theaters) and nobody has any idea what the plot, characters and general direction are supposed to be about as per usual with Okouchi. Basically stuff we could pretty much tell just by watching the trailer. See the thing with Okouchi is he doesn't really write with a sense of purpose, he writes pretty much to fill time and keep as many people as possible back for the next episode which means cliffhangers out the ass and plots that end up all over the place with surprise random as fuck twists that have the shows veering off in new directions pretty much every episode instead of a clear coherent one. That's pretty much what happened with Guilty Crown, King Gainer and Valvrave at least. His shows can be a fun ride for the sheer insanity of it all but going in expecting a coherent story arc is a bad idea.

It's industrial japan x steam punk, looks absolutely gorgeous, quick glimpses at the village where amazing and full of detail.

-The MC is great because he is an active MC, most mc are reactionary like that faggot from stray dogs or the guy from re:zero, where as something happens and they react as an introduction.
In Ikoma introduction we see him actively working on something he is passionate about as he monologes, an active introduction which introduces him makes him already 100x more interesting then any other mc this season.
And of course he isn't too edgy like guts or a little bitch like shinji, he's just right.

I don't really see what's so hard to get about the plot here. It's transparently a story about the main character fighting zombies and surviving in a hellish world with the other named characters while they live inside the train, period. I don't really care much about Okouchi myself but you're exaggerating. There is an obvious purpose to the story so far, regardless of any real or perceived randomness that might affect specific events. Same with Overman King Gainer for that matter. It wasn't hard to understand. Just because there are surprising events or twists doesn't mean it is "incoherent" unless you're knee-jerk reacting to everything and can't take a step back to see the big picture. Even Guilty Crown, which I hated but was only like 1/3 written by him, was about Shu and Inori's doomed romance, coming of age, etc..

No he really does do incoherent twists. Go watch Guilty Crown or Valvrave where shit is launching off in a new direction (pretty much peaking with the Hitler Shu arc) almost every episode and the sole focus seems to be on making things as completely over the top and full of cliffhangers and blood and guts as possible so that people will at least come back assuming the next episode will continue in the same direction the previous one left of with. Rarely happened, particularly with Guilty Crown. I also don't seriously expect him to write every episode, maybe about half of them, 3 quarters at most.

King Gainer I honestly enjoyed but fuck if I had any idea what was going on most episodes. I don't know how much of that was post 2000's Tomino or not though. I mean this sort of shit has it's camp value no doubt, but I wouldn't seriously suspect this show is going to be any sort of memorable masterpiece.

Naw there's plenty of originals that look like they could be complete disasters. Macross Delta and Kiznaiver have tons of potential for that. It's practically the expectation people have for originals nowadays cause they're just so ill conceived and tend to be ripoffs of other hits or just throw as many marketable elements into a blender with only 12 episodes to do whatever with while the marketing and branding attempts to carry the weight. I pretty much never go to watch originals until they're completely done and I know more or less what I'm getting into anymore for a reason.

I didn't like Guilty Crown, you don't need to convince me of that, but obviously the Hitler Shu arc had a purpose in the long run. It showed him the error of those fascist ways and he ended up overcoming them. There's a lot of complaints to be made about the show, no doubt, but the underlying point is all regular hero's journey stuff. Which then proceeded with the defeat of the villains, etc. as you'd expect. Cliffhangers can be overused, you got that right, but I don't think it's as impossible to understand as you're making it sound like. I meant that he was the assistant to the GC writer, so the dude shared blame but wasn't in charge of everything. He is fully responsible for Valvrave though, but even there it's not hard to explain what the story was about (even when it sucked): space vampire teenagers against a world that hated and feared them. Admittedly, King Gainer was also full Tomino so that's a factor too.

Of course it's not going to be a masterpiece. It's just another action/horror mix that will be a blockbuster for normalfags.
