Aikatsu was great and cute and all but not a masterpiece like PR. Stars could definitely end up being better at what Aikatsu did.

So I was right to ignore everyone claiming it wouldn't be Aikatsu! because all of that was exactly like something out of the original. Now to wait for subs. Roller is in fact best girl though.

Random musings for those who can't wait

Let's see here. The beginning, two things I noted. One, The Excitement Reader System has become the most Gaudy thing I've ever seen. Doesn't it hurt their head being that big?!

Second, Hime is not really into Choreography. The stage did some exciting stuff, and Hime's Aura was Odayaka Ja Nai. Still it gave me a less than favorable impression. The CG Leveled up in general though!

Koharu is a good girl and Yume is a cute. She does have a little spunk, but I REALLY need context as to what the fuck she was doing before the Commercial Break.

Also according to the Kami-sama No Galge, she is totally on route for that dude. That was a pretty blatantly obvious thing

Johnny's Replacement is... Alright. By herself in another Dimension she'd be best girl right away. Here, she's just pretty much putting Johnny and Tiara together. Excellent combo, but too obvious.

Stage Dress Set up! BIG Improvement, much more Dynamic! I really liked it.

Yume's Performance: Overall, better than Hime's Yume has a little spirit in the song. I was also weirded out by how Yume's Aura and stage mod powers rivaled Hime's there. A little excessive, and she pulled herself a SPECIAL APPEAL. Then pulled the most awesome way to get yourself noticed! I started laughing, the fuck I am. I did however hear "Is that Really a First Year?" I hope it wasn't because she pretty much pulled an Ichigo, but we'll see.

The Ending: You can (not) call it Aikatsu style. We've gone to Pretty Rhythm levels of WUBING. The song itself was fine, it was just not what you'd expect from an Aikatsu ending.

Final Verdict: Let's see how it goes, it made no critical errors, but Yume might be a little too OP, Unless of course, she went beyond her limits due to some circumstance and won't go back to that level for a while.

I can't say I didn't enjoy it, other than the boy drama at least, but as has already been said it's most definitely not Aikatsu, and that's what's really keeping from fully getting into it.

Whoa this is totally different! Getting the bad stuff out of the way first, the CG looked to be a step back. Like Aikatsu it's similar to the 2D art, which is good, but the expressions feel a tiny bit overdone, and the movements are kind of robotic and too sharp.

But everything else, man. I can't wait to scroll down and see what everyone says about the very first scene being Yume bumping into a random guy, and not only that the PV scene was this episode too with her falling straight on that male idol, who as it turns out goes to the attached male idol division. Wow, this is gonna be something.

The school itself too feels way more like a high-class and proper school, with S4 traveling in limos instead of the vans of Starlight.The way they're treated too is way beyond anything Mizuki or Ichigo ever got. Not only that, but did you notice? The girls aren't even idols yet, they're "kenkyuusei", or training students. That means a lot less outside recognition until they make it to a higher level. That might be when they get their upgraded uniforms.

The sidles were super animated, which is promising. Laura's totally not what I thought with her going through the window, but her rivalry was already set up nicely in how Yume can't deal well with her.

Songs were all pretty good, especially the ED. And the concerts changed too, with how auras look and appeals work. I like it, it's very fresh. And their transformation was fucking amazing, I think they outdid the original with that jumping.

And then that ending, holy crap. We don't fully understand how it works yet, but Yume apparently did something so amazing that she was called the beginning of a legend, and then she didn't even remember a second of it. I think the lore runs much deeper this season than before. Plus, the Headmaster is FUCKING JIN voiced by none other than our Chef Yotsuba.

This looks really different and really exciting. It's too early to say for sure, but I think this will be a good successor to Aikatsu.

I really liked the first episode, the dress-up sequence is fun now, everything really gives a different vibe and I'm fine with it, the ending was pretty great too, though I can already feel Koharu becoming super irrelevant unless she becomes like Sumire into an "Um!" machine, or she has some kind of change in her personality in performance or something.

Those were pretty cheap if you ask me, and a lot of people I know just skipped them.

Ruka's voice as Hime was surprisingly good. I can buy her being a revered singer and not a bad one like early Akari.

I realized why that phrase just makes me mad. More than the inherent tone of "boys = bad in mah idol anime", it's the idea that a single concept can make people hate without proper judgement. Ideas and potential storylines are just nebulous things, with the possibility of being good or bad. But here, this subset of people have decided that they won't like it no matter what. It just baffles me, it's not consistent with my worldview to give everything a fair chance, especially since something as innocuous as anime can't possibly do you any harm.

It's like the people saying it's not Aikatsu at all. It is. Cute girls striving to be idols at an idol school, taking different lessons and auditions, making friends and competing with each other in a world where technology exists for the sole purpose of making idol shows amazing. Besides, if it was a carbon copy then nobody would like it, it would just be inferior. This way it's both the same at its core but with different flavors to keep it interesting.

Precure is something entirely different though. Since almost it's inception it's been having completely different yearly series with only one or two that got follow ups. Aikatsu on the other hand established itself as something unique for almost 200 episodes then got torn down and had everything changed. It just shouldn't be called Aikatsu. It's like if PriPara was called Pretty Rhythm Pretty or something.

Does Stars have separate voice actors for speaking and singing voices too?

Pretty much. People have expectations for different things. I see boy drama in Jewelpet or Pretty Rhythm? I could care less. That has always been there and have been staples of those series.

In Aikatsu? It has never been part of the franchise until now. We are only starting to get this after 4 seasons of the franchise setting a particular tone. What's so strange about being weirded our, annoyed or reluctant about it? It's a very normal reaction. That it is an actual reboot does not help either because everything is changing one way or another despite the core concept of "idols" still being there.

How can there be people who can say with a straight face that Stars is the exactly the same as the Aikatsu that just ended is just beyond me. You have to be either very dense or just purposely blind so you can act like a contrarian asshole.

I'm gonna worry about boy drama when it actually happens. Yume falling on top of that dude doesn't technically mean that the boy drama is gonna be a focus or overbearing. I know this is kind of wishful thinking but I don't want those expectations to ruin the rest of the show, which I thought was pretty good.

This isn't coming out of nowhere either. In S1 they made a point of Ichigo saying the old adage of "romance is forbidden for idols" and Naoto saying he has no interest in them. But in S2 Orihime says she finds it acceptable to love so long as you're dedicated. In S3 Kokone is an obsessive fan of Yotsuba and Akari becomes the closes idol to her top designer Sena, and in S4 says that he gives her the wings to fly higher. Now the idols are interacting with male idols, it's just the logical progression that's been built up this whole time.

I didn't complain one bit when Sena was introduced because from the start Sena never represented any sort of boy drama. Boy Idols like this in a series that never had them before, that smug look in the PV, this episode, it all points to proper boy drama.

I was really happy to have a couple little girl series without it for once. It was a nice change, not that I dislike boy drama in other stuff to begin with. But now Aikatsu is just becoming the same as everything else. Sad, really.
