That's the most depressing part. You strap yourself in for a wild ride and expect an entertaining clash of personalities given who the characters are based on but you get fucking nothing. Battle shounen nonsense where the characters barely resemble who they're supposed to. Once the main plot with edgy-kun is finished they even bring in evil Western literary figures and then it's more irrelevant fights heaped upon more irrelevant fights. And don't get me started on these shitty characters, Dazai ends up being this boring piece of shit who Miyano suits perfectly. It looks cool and all but seriously, from a story and character perspective this is an absolute waste of potential.

Ranpo is still best boy.

Well I'm a litfag and have in fact gone through most of the Japanese literature that Bungou has referenced, and honestly the series is an embarrassment. The characters are your dime a dozen pretty boys with the added quirk of being named after this particular author or having an attack based on their most popular work. It eventually gets to a point where you can tell the mangaka doesn't know what the hell they're doing and just introduces a figure and their most popular work for the hell of it without really doing anything major. And it just keeps going.

Some of the relationships are amusing given the context (like Tanizaki and Naomi, or what happens with Izumi when she's introduced) but that's about it. It's essentially a shounen battle series under the guise of a litfag manga.

You don't really have to know anything about the writers, just that the names of their skills are stuff they've written. I think the skills are based more on the names of the books rather than their contents. There are also Western writers too, like John Steinbeck or Agatha Christie.

Ranpo Kitan is the only reason I recognized Edogawa's name.

I didn't even make the connection immediately between the ability being called "No Longer Human" and the works covered in Aoi Bungaku, mainly because I watched it while it was airing years ago and never felt any inclination to remember the author's name.
