I was a big fan of Indiana Jones; then I realized he was kind of a fake hero. The real heroes are the people who work hard and do their stuff right, like firefighters and policemen.

Does it have the option of enabling romanization? Hepburn or Nihon-shoki, I can read both. I need it because I'm just starting out.

Is there any way to reorder new cards by word frequency?

I read a lot, so I have a whole bunch of accumulated new cards in my mining deck, and way too often I get bursts of rather specific vocab instead of more useful stuff.
>>
>>139687080
No, but if you're just starting out, you won't understand any of it, romaji or not. Wait till you're a decent way through Tae Kim (at least through "Essential Grammar").
>>

I'll learn them after doing some grammar for at least a few months (basic grammar), for now I'm just relying on various romanization systems.

Pretty cool, is this meant for children or something? Kids at this level really shouldn't have to care about this shit but it's still nice to have.
>>
>>139687166
You should learn them before doing grammar, or at least while doing grammar. Kana really doesn't take very long.

What grammar guide are you using that is letting you get away with knowing no kana anyway? It's probably not a very good one.
>>
>>139687225
>Kids at this level really shouldn't have to care about this shit but it's still nice to have.
It's Japan, anon.
Kids are supposed to be nobel prize winners at this point.
>>
>>139686461

Yeah, it's not particularly hard when you have the system down. The trick is to not try too hard to make the visualization something that would make logical sense in real life, and to not assign abstract concepts to any radicals etc. because they're harder to visualize than physical things. The latter is one reason why the KD mnemonics are often pretty weak.

I do non-kanji stuff the same way by having a visualization for each kana or frequent kana combination, after you have it all set up it makes remembering words incredibly easy to the degree that 90% of the time you can remember a word correctly the day after you first encounter it.

It's for kids and Japanese learners. There's an about page if you want to read it: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/easy/about.html

If you click on the icons in pic related, there are descriptions of various natural disasters, how to prepare for them, and what to do when they happen.
>>
>>139687211
Really? I would understand if you were talking about Spanish or German, but it's really hard to believe it with Japanese.
>>139687236
But that's just too much work, isn't it? I'm doing the Jenki series of textbooks for now, it has romanization and the Japanese systems too. I'll switch to them after I can read something more meaningful in the romanization systems.

The purpose of a grammar guide is to get to you to point where you can start reading things in Japanese. You're going to get to the end of the grammar guide and realise you still can't read anything in Japanese because you can't read the writing system. Online dictionaries like jisho.org will be of no use to you either since they do not have romaji.
>>
>>139687364
>I'll switch to them after I can read something more meaningful in the romanization systems.
You're doing yourself a disservice, mate. The sooner you learn kana the better.
>>
>>139687441
But the meaning is still in English though. And I though grammar and kanas had nothing in common, besides being Japanese of course.

Depends what threshold you consider "starting". If starting to learn kana counts as starting, then I imagine almost everyone fails because people are lazy and dumb and get discouraged when they realize the mountain ahead of them.

I'd still say the majority of people fail if you consider starting Tae Kim / Core to be starting. The startup pastebin gets over 300 views a week yet DJT's IP count never really goes above 100 (at least not around this time, it does during summer and new years). If you consider finishing Tae Kim or a similar guide as starting, then maybe closer to half (or less, who knows).

I think once you get to the point where the majority of your "studying" is just reading things you're interested in, it's kind of hard to feel any reason to "give up" unless you're not interested in anything related to Japanese anymore. At that point, when you're still able to find plenty of compelling content, the closest you can do to "giving up" is dropping Anki when it's still beneficial to you, and even then you're still making decent progress.

Can someone tell me what the best way to use Anki is?

So I already read from the guide to remove the review limit. What else? When using it I either click on AGAIN or GOOD but never HARD or EASY. Am I doing it wrong?
>>
>>139693276

The image in >>139693344 pretty much encapsulates it. There isn't really a "correct" answer. People who went the vocab only route will tell you that's better and people who went the "kanji study and then vocab alongside/after" route will tell you that their method is better.

People who did kanji study will tell you that vocab will just blur together and you'll have a harder time with vocab the further in your get as you pile on more and more similar looking kanji and weird readings. Whether that's true or not, I don't know.

I usually don't see valid arguments from vocab people against kanji methods aside from I guess "if you're not having problems distinguishing similar kanji then there's not much reason to do kanji study", which is true. Most of the time it's silly stuff like them not understanding how mnemonics work or saying that people who do RTK/KD can't read or whatever.

Just do what works best for you. Everyone's going to think their method is best because it's what worked for them and they think the same will apply to everyone else.
>>
>>139693558
>Whether that's true or not, I don't know.
Vocab guy here, I think it is. I can read things, even LOGH and Dies Irae, without much sweat but when it comes to individually identifying Kanji I suck like absolute balls. I learned "料簡" recently and thought "Huh, is 簡 a new kanji? Maybe nonjouyou?" but upon looking it up it's in fucking 簡単 of all things. Despite knowing many words with it, out of context I couldn't recognize it.

So, individual kanji study is something I thing is very valuable to distinguishing between kanji out of context, but in the context of reading/understanding "real" text it's not as important.
>>
>>139693558
>I usually don't see valid arguments from vocab people against kanji methods aside from I guess "if you're not having problems distinguishing similar kanji then there's not much reason to do kanji study", which is true.
What about the one where people are retarded and frequently end up studying kanji in extremely inefficient ways?
>>
>>139693886
Vocab people can do the same thing, it's just a bit harder to manage to do. Even then, doing an established working method in an extremely inefficient way would make it their fault, not the fault of the method / the concept of studying kanji individually. Unless by "inefficient" you mean the epic "memorizing a bunch of stupid useless stories/keywords" meme, in which case that goes back to not understanding how mnemonics work.
>>
>>139693693
The thing is, when do you ever need to distinguish individual Kanji? If you can read the words surely it doesn't matter.

I guess it would help for writing, but the vast majority of us will only ever type anyway.
>>
>>139693558

I'm not really against the kanji methods but couldn't you say one of the benefits of learning through vocabulary is that you can start reading earlier?

>>139694030
Nope they are useless. Just keep the sounds and thats it.
>>
>>139694010
That's probably the biggest benefit, yeah. It's mostly a choice of "spend a few months (or a few weeks if you're a really dedicated NEET) doing a kanji study method and then jumping into reading/vocab/grammar", or "jump straight into reading/vocab/grammar but have a harder time with it and not be able to go as fast with vocab without dropping retention".

Along with the other things of course, but still.

No fucking shit! I was listening to Japanese music for so long with no idea what it meant. It was a fucking shame, ESPECIALLY because of the fact that I listen to hipster singer-songwriters. It's so goddamn orgasmic to be able to understand lyrics and look up what the artist is doing via twitter or their blogs or whatever instead of scrambling around for scraps of translations some mexican wrote while sniffing crack

Of course, this only applies if you're listening to music that's actually good. If you're unironically listening to anison trash, understanding the lyrics will lead you to becoming disillusioned with it, which is a good thing in the end I guess

Because no one can be arsed.

>>139694493
That's a pretty extremely atypical case though, RTK shouldn't take you any more than a few months. That's like saying you shouldn't use VNs as reading practice because that one guy has been reading Flyable Heart for over a year and hasn't finished the common route or that you shouldn't use manga as reading practice because that one guy has been studying for 7 years and can barely understand Yotsuba. There's no reason to discard a method because it's possible to go too slowly with. Might as well not bother learning Japanese in general if that's the mindset you're going to adapt.

>The thing is, when do you ever need to distinguish individual Kanji?
Reading or looking up words you don't know without needing texthooker?
>>
>>139694635
You're not wrong that it's atypical, but there's still room to argue that one more level of studying before reading is just one more level where people can fuck up and waste tons of time, even if you say that other levels have the same problem. The only place where this would particularly not be a potential problem for certain people with studying kanji in isolation is if they skipped formal "vocab as such" study altogether and went straight to reading from kanji, like Kaufman did. However, I'm not saying that there's any argument against people who are already studying kanji in a sensible way; only that there should be a warning if someone gives kanji study as advice.

So if I know Hira and Katakana. But no vocabulary or grammar or Kanji.

Yes. Or it wouldn't be in the guide. Tae Kim doesn't take that much effort just read it.

>>
>>139694771
Right, but it's a silly argument that isn't exclusive to kanji study at all. It applies to all of Japanese; be consistent and study every day if you want solid progress. If you set a minimum amount of like 20-25 kanji to go through every day with RTK, then it won't take longer than a few months (or less depending on how dedicated you are).
>>
>>139694919
>by the definitions.
Maybe you should learn English first. And it's not hard, you just have to keep at it. If you don't want to put in any effort, don't bother learning at all.
>>
>>139694983
I know English already from the time I was a little kodomo. I want to put in effort, but I want to cut corners wherever I can. I'm not even considering learning the Chinese characters honestly, that just seems close to impossible. I don't want to spend 2-3 years just doing that.
>>
>>139694919
>Sorry if I said something stupid, I was just wondering...

If you're actually serious then you're a fucking moron. Grammar is what actually structures languages, without it we'd do nothing but point and shout the name of objects, that's the limit of your communication without grammar.

Seriously how the fuck did you expect to read the different words tenses and conjugations without knowing any of them? It would look like this to you. "He look** ** bird" That is how sentances would look to you if you were stupid enough to ignore grammar like a fucking dolt.

You're the worst case of できない I have ever seen. Piss off.
>>
>>139695064
Don't bother, you''re too dumb.
>>
>>139694942
>Right, but it's a silly argument that isn't exclusive to kanji study at all.
I literally just said that it applies to every level. People can waste time anywhere. The difference is that doing kanji before vocab is an extra step and you need to take even more caution than normal when you have extra steps. I said that my argument does not qualify when there is kanji study and not vocab study. Please hear what I actually say and not some vague mimetic approximation.
>It applies to all of Japanese; be consistent and study every day if you want solid progress.
Okay, you clearly don't understand the example cases where people waste all their time on one level then. It's not because they don't do enough, it's because they think they're not done yet.
>>
>>139695113
But "He look** **bird" makes sense, in the sense that I can understand it perfectly without even knowing any grammar. Maybe it's different with Japanese, but how exactly?
>>139695116

>>
>>139695157
I'm not really sure what you're trying to get at that isn't already obvious. I understand what you're saying, but I think you're being silly. Most people who recommend doing kanji study supplement that recommendation with the warning that they shouldn't spend any longer than a few months on it anyways, so it's a non-issue.
>>
>>139695298
You can just show a simple sentance in Japanese that illustrates the point. It shouldn't be a problem for you if you know a little bit of Japanese.
>>
>>139694833
>use a texhooker you dolt
Most of the stuff I read can't be texthooked. Actually, that is probably why I think individual kanji study is more valuable than most people around here do.

>>
>>139695345
"It shouldn't take longer than X or you're doing it wrong" isn't a warning, it's an observation. But people feel like they're stupid and need extra time to "master" the material. They know they've already "done RTK". People who feel like they're never done will never progress past doing something that they view as a prerequisite for the next step, which is absolutely the case you're presenting to them if you say "Studying kanji in isolation can help you learn vocabulary easier". And if you load on two sentences of detailed explanation, they won't read it correctly and will approximate what you're saying as that same binary thing. People are stupid.

The problem here isn't the fact that RTK should only take a certain amount of time, the problem is that they do nothing but RTK and nothing but RTK for a long time. People who /actually/ can't make themselves do N kanji a day are dekinais. The problem is people who feel the need to master one material before moving onto the next. People like that *will not respond to advice* to give up what they started and go to the next stage; They'll "start over japanese from scratch" instead, which is code for "giving up but pretending to not give up".

You might not be someone who has trouble getting stuck on one piece of material, but these people DO exist, and they WILL misunderstand you when you explain the caveats to them so long as you beat around the bush or say it in ten words or less.

"One should not study kanji in isolation before working on vocab." I know that most people who can do it, but "most" isn't good enough for general advice. "If one wants to study kanji in isolation they should do it alongside memorizing words instead of beforehand".

Yes, this is actually a big difference, and no, it is *not* "obvious".

As a vocab guy that really isn't much of a problem. New words are pretty rare, and even then half the time you can guess the pronunciation just from context or recognizing the phonetic components of the kanji
>>
>>139696440
>Does this imply you're actually reading at a decent pace?
Yeah. Did you see that LOGH word frequency dump? The vast majority of words used are common words like you'd expect. Same for Dies Irae (though the words it uses are "common" for chuuni games of which I have read a couple). It's all Japanese in the end.

I will admit that the chants in Dies Irae are far above my skill level but they are not very at allfrequent in comparison to most of the normal text so it's not something I sweat about too much.

また、イラストの上に文字が被っている部分には白フチが被せられていますので、下になったイラスト自体も死んでいるという、
本文、イラストの双方を殺す最悪のデザインです。
イラストを避けるようにしたほうが良かったのではないでしょうか。
本文書体が無駄に大きいのも気になります。ここまでイラストにかぶるなら、
書体サイズを少し小さくするなどしたほうが良かったのではないでしょうか。

というわけで、ページを開いて読めませんでしたので文章についてはレビューできません。

We believe that we invent symbols. The truth is that they invent us; we are their creatures, shaped by their hard, defining edges. When language learners take their lesson they are given a meme, a macro image stamped with the profile of Dekinai. Their acceptance of that mockery is their acceptance of the despair and burdens of language learners—they are fearful from that moment, though they may know nothing of the language itself. I did not know that then, but it is a profound mistake to believe that we must know of such things to be influenced by them, and in fact to believe so is to believe in the most debased and superstitious kind of magic. The would-be sorcerer alone has faith in the efficacy of pure knowledge; rational people know that things act of themselves or not at all.

A native answering questions and only using said trip for answering questions is the only case in the thread where trips are legitimately warranted. That's proper usage of a trip. It erases any doubt whenever they answer a question and you know the answer you're getting is a reliable one. There's nothing wrong with using it in that case. break it down into the smallest parts and tell me how you understand each part as they relate to each other

same thing for the other sentence. dictionary look up the onomatapoeic words youre identifying, break the sentence down into the smallest parts you are able, explain how you understand them as they relate to each other and post back

There's no set number because it varies from kanji to kanji. Memorize the ones that are used a lot, treat the ones used only in 1-2 specific words or only in obscure words as exceptions and learn them separately. Poking around at jisho should make it pretty clear which are which.

と "and"
ちがった different, not in it's intended state
な indicates emphasis

Am I supposed to feel discouraged about trying to learn both kanji and vocab at the same time using the recommended kanji decks?

no real major problems until you get to と ちがった

its hard for me to convey in english but と is giving you association (as if to say 'like' or 'with' but dont think of と as one of those words 1:1) with パラパラ and then ちがった is telling you something is different from the thing と is connected to ala パラパラ

so the gohan was actually too べたべた and not ぱらぱら enough (the opposite)

if youve made and eaten rice yourself often it makes more sense probably than to someone who doesnt due to whatever gaijin shit. being able to get a grip on words because of the situation being familiar is probably a thing that can help you understand

な is fine also

Because I'm like 8 episodes in and that's the most obvious thing ever. I don't know the details but when they mentioned the 4 different "colonies" of humans during the dark ages I assumed the rats were from one of them

I suppose I should leave before I get real spoilers though

Dude if you wanna spoil someone you gotta make the first few words count. You can't start with something obvious. Dunno what you're aiming for anyway desu I don't really care much about spoilers for anime since they are so short and the plot progresses so quickly it's not you're running a 80+ hour VN by saying that Sora dies.

i've been using the kanji damage plus deck up until now and i'm 600 cards in, now that i found out about the other good kanji decks im thinking about swapping but i'd lose a month of work.

s-should i do it? the kanjidamage deck is ok but it blatantly uses incorrect meanings sometimes and fucks me over, and it doesn't always show onyomi + kunyomi

Problem with Kanji though is you still don't know any words. Unless what you play is fully voice acted so you can read along, you won't know what it is. Yes, some meanings are obvious, but others are not.

Can kanji fags tell me the meanings of these without looking them up?

>>139717628
People who focus on vocabulary learn readings as well as anyone else. You just learn the readings as they come up in vocabulary. Provided you've learned vocab previously that used that kanji, there's no reason you can't read the word without knowing what it means. There's no true advantage to learning kanji by themselves unless you have trouble differentiating them when you try to learn vocabulary.

I learned long ago that the exposure you get from using programs in the Japanese language is extremely insignificant compared to even a couple minutes of reading. It's not worth the hassle. Many times "indie" programs like these just use google translate for their alternate languages.

What's a reliable way of looking up kanji in "Remembering the Kanji" by James Heisig? I can barely ever find the difficult Kanji I have trouble remembering whenever I encounter one in Anki in it (core 6k).

Also how many new words a day do you guys study? I've got mine set to 20 but I feel like I could go ahead and increase it to maybe 25 or 30.

Unfortunately the average posting in this thread never matures beyond beginner stage.

Even the kanji vs vocabulary arguers haven't realized that once you get to an intermediate level, whether you studied kanji individually or not doesn't make much difference - it's all leading you towards the same level of knowledge.
>>
Japanese people are fucking retarded. Who came up with so many fucking counters for stuff?
>>
>>139721282
>Even the kanji vs vocabulary arguers
Those arguments always center on whether it's worth the time/effort in the first place, so whether long-term it matters isn't really relevant.
>>
>>139721132
its the meme of memes
I admittedly never went more than a page or so into it but thats because it looked like a waste of time that has nothing to do with real Japanese. At least one person around here mentioned he did it and then still couldn't understand a thing. Or it was just kanji in general. None of it is real Japanese. How many Japanese words are there in it? How many Japanese sentences? It is truly the memest, with no proven results at all.

>>139718218

I think the point of the book is more about remembering the shape of the kanji than what they actually mean.

>"How many Japanese words are there?"

>>
>>139721406
It is a book about remembering how to write the kanji. It does exactly what it says it will do. Literally the only problem with RTK is the retards who didn't read the introduction and don't understand what it is about.
>>
>>139721402
You'd think natural selection among words would have just caused people to drop using counters by now, yet somehow they stuck around. I have no idea why.
>>
>>139721406
It's all about engraving the chink cave paintings shape on your mind, like, learning to learn Japanese.
>>
>>139717392
I don't know why you're cherrypicking words like that and acting like you're not. Most of them still kind of make sense, but it's not 100% intuitive all of the time. For the vast majority of words, I am able to guess the meaning and usually reading correctly.

My retention went up when I did kanji study and now I don't have any issues with stuff blurring together. I can do pretty much as many new words a day as I want without it affecting my retention, my limiter is pretty much how many reviews I'm willing to do.

If you have 0 issues ever mixing up similar kanji, or being able to tell when a word has a new kanji, or you're able to tell the meaning of the majority of new words based on the kanji without doing any kanji study, and you're able to recognize individual kanji and say "hey that's the kanji in __, ___, ___, etc" then cool, but that wasn't the case for me and I was also interested in handwriting a bit for fun.

Putting all of that aside, you can still learn vocab alongside learning the kanji or you can go through vocab at a faster rate since something like Core is piss easy after doing RTK/KD.

There is no correct answer here. Both are fine depending on the person and what they want / what they're okay with dealing with. The debate between the two is fucking stupid and pointless and has been beat to deal for literally over a thousand threads.

>>139721451
Because in ancient Japanese philosophy everything has a beginning and an end, so every one of their verbs is based on the concept of something "opening or closing".
Running is just opening and closing your legs, eating is opening and closing your mouth,
just to name a few.
>>
>>139721464
>>139721406
Yes, the entire book is "how to more effectively memorize kanji". There is no attempt whatsoever to teach meanings, readings, sentences, or any other aspect of language, beyond a vague meaning-ish "keyword" that is used to refer to each character or primitive.
>>
>>139721556
...which is why I think it's a good supplement. You encounter a kanji in Anki or whatever the fuck, then look up in the book on some advice on how to remember it.

I think you're completely missing the point of the book, dude.

>>
>>139721554
Did you know? If you only have opening, or only have closing, it would take an extremely long amount of time to say anything. But as soon as you introduce both opening and closing at the same time, everything happens instantly. Time starts moving. Physics happen. The world falls into place. People birth, live, and die. Time passes.

Opening and closing are the most powerful concepts in the metaverse.

Replace the kanji in the URL:
https://hochanh.github.io/rtk/%E5%9B%9B/index.html

I'm assuming you already completed RTK1, since you can't really do it in a random order (later kanji use earlier kanji and primitives for the mnemonics).

>>139721469
No, it's not bait. That's the point. It's a book about memorizing kanji so it's hardly related to Japanese reading or listening at all. The whole gimmick is that, "oh, if you do this first it will save you time later", which is as far as I can tell, unproven. I don't actually see any strong endorsements of it from reliable sources, successful learners or the like. Thus it's just some meme as far as I can tell.

If you learn Kanji on their own, that's another thing, but at least you can memorize a reading or some shit that is immediately useful. RtK from what I know doesn't even have a single reading of it.
>>
>>139721872
Believe it or not we actually have that technology now. At least lab rats do.

Learning kanji is good because of the way human memory works. The more you can condense concepts, the lower the cognitive load, and the easier it gets.

Personally I fucking hate RTK. But I think learning kanji is good..as long as you use a proper method and not dumb ass RTK.

If you don't plan on giving up then it doesn't really matter because it's definitely worth it in the long run. Hell, it probably pays off by the time you're starting to slump through intermediate hell if you went through it quickly enough.
