What do you think about the early 2000s as a decade for anime? By early 2000s, I mean around 2000-2005, around the time where digital colouring was still very new.
Do you think shows from that period aged very well?
>>
>Do you think shows from that period aged very well?

I can vouch for Please Teacher and Please Twins
>>
>>139683483
A lot of very good shows came out in the late 90s to early 00s. Not everything aged very well though, because digital animation techniques weren't mature yet. Especially the use of 3DCG.
>>
Otaku shit started being so fascinated with itself and VN culture around that time and every anime had some
>that's so "moe!" Total moe attribute!
nearing mid 00s.
That was awful.
>>
>>139683871
I thought that came around in the late 2000s
>>
>>139683483
For all the shit early 2000s anime get for looking dated, some of them manage to look better than many of today's shows. FLCL, Blood TLV, and Innocence still look great.
>>
>>139683483
Yes, they did. Shows from the 90s didn't solely because of the big eyes, not that I mind personally, but it is a common complaint.
>>
>>139683915
There was Genshiken in 2004.
I thought NHK was older though.
>>
>>139684014
>Genshiken
Thanks anon, I forgot the name of that show
NHK was 2006, Genshiken 2004

I never really had an issue with it.

There's a soft spot in my heart for Love Hina, but I tried rewatching it recently and it was beyond awful. School Rumble aged pretty well though imo.
>>
>>139684241
>soft spot in my heart for Love Hina
Domestic violence is not good, anon. Besides, I don't expect innovative anime to hold up well.
>>
>>139684241
Love Hina was awful
Now School Rumle, that was great. The first season was the best
>>
>>139684167
A shame what happened to Haibane's image resolution though
>>
>>139684354
>Domestic violence is not good, anon
I wonder how people like this can even handle anime if they can't differentiate between reality and cartoon gags.
>>
>>139684395
>Haibane
What happened? Is it really low (480p or lower)? I haven't watched it in forever.
>>
>>139684428
It spawned an entire generation of terrible anime with useless beta males.
>>
>>139684375

It wasn't as awful when I was 12 and discovering anime streams on shoutcast TV. Shit was revolutionary.
>>
>>139684498
What does that have to do with domestic violence being bad? Also, I'd take the beta male high schooler harem lead over the 90s asshole ronin harem lead any day.
>>
>>139683871
Stuff with lots of otaku culture self reference goes back much much further than that, and it still hadn't really exploded by the mid 2000s although it was picking up steam at that point.
>>
>>139684532
Even back then I found Naru to be a bitch and the whole "beat up the main character" tiring.
>>
depends on the show
Gankutsuou, Brigadoon, Zoids New Century, Cromartie High School, Planetes, Fafner, Tetsujin, Banner of the stars, Kikaider, Iriya no Sora, Mushishi, Eureka 7, Digimon Tamers, Scrapped Princess, and Metropolis are some anime that aged well imo
>>
>>139684543
Love Hina has been been referred to as domestic violence for a long time. I was only expressing my dislike for LH in a lighthearted way.
>>
>>139684716
Oh, sorry, I thought you were one of the people who actually get offended by "male abuse" slapstick.
>>
>>139684644
I could have sworn half of those were later.
To me, Rozen Maiden is what springs to mind when I think early 2000s. A little bit ugly, but it has its own charm.

Vandread and Gatekeeper are okay last I remembered. At least there isn't QUALITY in there.
>>
I always thought shows like Inuyasha were kind of interesting because they suddenly went from cel painting to digital half way through
>>
>>139683871
>moe
Don't you mean pre-90s with their KAWAII~
>>
>>139685203
The kawaii fad ended.
>>
>>139685274
It never did, the fad will never end. Japan will always be the country of cute.
>>
>>139685437
I guess you're right. What are you watching/reading this season? Hurricane Girls is where it's at.

I dislike the washed out look a lot of shows had around then, but at the same time it's very nostalgic.

I miss the old cel stuff every now and then. Sometimes digital feels very sterile in comparison. Like compare the Eva Rebuilds to the original. It's much better quality animation but there's hardly any life to it. Or you get these incredibly basic interchangeable backgrounds in so many shows. I still like digital though.
>>
>>139685536

I think the problem was combining that washed out look with really generic character designs and settings. In something like Higurashi or MariMite it fits pretty well.
>>
>>139684498
NGE aired in 1995, anon.
>>
>>139685770
Exactly. More than five years later, the clones show up.
>>
Remember 2004-05 were the best years for anime
>>
I think that the early s were the period with the lowest lower standards, some of the full length anime we got from there would never air today.
>>
>>139686181
Such as?
I apologise if it sounds like I'm asking for reccomendations. But what could possibly be so bad? Is it on the same level as those really cheap 90s OVAs?
>>
>>139683483
a shit aura that almost only Madhouse anime being remembered.
>>
>>139683483
00-06 is the dark ages.
>>
It was an awkward stage but it also had some really great anime the likes you won't find in other eras, like Texhnolyze, Gungrave, Haibane Renmei, etc.
