Kisame foreshadowed his own death while threatening Itachi, who he looked back on at the moment of his death for being right. That one does not know who they are until the moment they die.

Therefore, even though he was the first member of Akutsuki, he was not able to see it through to completion (birth).
In the end, he died never having found his place in the world after all, because he was never truly born. His life was a false existence up until the end like he said.
That was Kisame's nindo. But just because he lived that, doesn't mean his life wasn't without purpose, just like Itachi said. "We're not fish, we're humans."
His purpose was, like the dead baby sharks that get eaten, to see Akutsuki come out into the world.
