I know /a/ hates homos too much to even consider this, but I think it would've added a nice dimension to the series if there was some acknowledged romantic interest between the two, most likely unrequited on Kiku's side. I like to think its because he saw what Miyokichi was from the very beginning or least early on. Kiku's Rakugo only starts becoming good when he takes the mannerisms of the sultry geisha in one of the stories directly from Miyokichi. He also had at least two other romances in his backstory. They just never got developed because the real story was Kiku trying to craft a believable lie to Konatsu.

I think it's enjoyable regardless, but I can't really see past my bias in that case.

I think a lot of the art and animation was sort of min-maxed. In some instances the animation and facial detail is top notch, mostly when they do Rakugo, but a few other scenes as well.
Like when Bon does his first good Shinigami, or some of the other really dramatic, turned-up scenes.

A lot of the time, though, they're not trying hard. I think animation (and some art in the more transition scenes) was one of the places where they had to cut corners in what must have been an absurdly expensive show.
