Near the end of that case after you find out de Killer has it out for Engarde you can choose to maintain his innocence and get a funny scene. But before that you're right, if you try to actually defend your client you'll get a game over.
I wish for once the series would have a villain whose personality didn't do a complete 180 once they're revealed. It would make those kinds of decisions have a lot more tension.
