The original Prisma is the only part that's at all mahou shoujo-y.

2wei gets a bit more F/SN-esque and a lot more fanservicey in place of the mahou shoujo aspects.

3rei (not animated yet) is balls to the wall F/SN.


It also happens to be the best animated adaptation of anything Type-Moon aside from maybe Carnival Phantasm.

I love FKL but I agree with you in terms of anime adaptions, obviously ufo's F/Z and UBW were (mostly, they briefly lost their way in a couple spots, but it got back on afterwards so it's fine) far superior in production values all around, including in the very important area of music. FKL is fucking superb FOR A BUDGET SHOW, but that it is a budget show definitely showed and I don't think any fan should try to brush that off. It has plenty of genuine strengths in expressions and so on to stand on its own merits.

That said, I think the source material is some of the best in recent works and good enough to raise it higher then it might have ranked otherwise, and SL actually did a reasonable decent job overall. Where they have gone animu original (like extending the Archer-Illya v Dark Saber fight) it hasn't been too bad even which is rare. I do still wish some magic had happened to give FKL a higher budget then economically justified and have ufo do it, it would have been a nice challenge for them and I'd have liked to see what they did with more freedom for crazy stuff. But thems the breaks.

Every part of this has been good, the warm friendship and budding relationships, the personal growth, and all that shine all the more in contrast and in defiance of normal nasuverse seriousness and darkness. Are you new to following a series as it comes out chapter by chapter in Japan? 8-10 chapters out of what is likely to be at least 60-70 in this part alone and the previous parts were like another 5 volumes, for a bunch of important backstory that is perfectly decent setup is fine. It only seems longer because we're seeing it as it comes out, in context for someone just reading straight through it's not a problem, and the shinji fight is fine too, it doesn't need to drag out and Assassin obviously doesn't stand a chance in a straight up fight with one of the Knight classes, even if Shinji had more potential and wasn't already a doll.

I'm not sure if you're new or if you're old and have let yourself get cynical but if you can't enjoy the whole series so far then I just feel bad for you and those like you as much as anything. Some of the outfits designs may end up that way just because that's how the girls imagine they should look since "magical outfits show some skin" is a thing. Eh, I don't disagree that regular Saber is probably the weakest of all of the original ones, dunno, maybe they considered it so iconic that there wasn't the room to mess with it much or get creative beyond having a midriff. Though FWIW Illya's install version (Saber Lily) worked in my opinion.

I do think it'd have been a little better if Miyu had gone more for full breast plate, but it doesn't really bother me either way. Miyu definitely seems like she'd have a more conservative mindset, but right before they learned about Installing in the Caster fight she had just been taught a hard lesson on how someone less grounded by common sense or any reality could actually be more effective when using magic, and I think there's something to that. It's bothered me in other discussions when people don't actually consider what humans would do in terms of designs and strategies if given access to a whole set of new powers and capabilities that defy physical law, so I kind of like that it gets acknowledged a little in FKL.

Yeah, it's a nice take on nasuverse. There IS some serious shit going down and some hard background, but even they take the more daring, hopeful path. It's mahou shoujo nasu and it works pretty well here, a different spin then the rest of the franchise but unarguably within the framework. There are still questions of justice and heroes, but some different possible answers. I guess though the fusion is something that's causing collisions in this show. You've got people like me who love it all and in fact like it even more because of the mix and find the various bits enhance each other. But then you've got two groups who came for one or the other and are thus constantly shitting on each other in stupid ways. They can't even acknowledge "yes that was a well done instance of XYZ, but I'm not personally into XYZ so not my cup of tea" because of all the standard reasons we see that shit everywhere. So instead it's just ridiculous feces flung back and forth.

Damn shame, normally threads on niche series get comfier when the adaptions are over and all the casuals fuck off. But there's kind of an inherent tension in FKL I guess so probably we'll always have to deal with this stuff.

Its not like this is going to be an entire complete grail war story about him. They already covered almost everything they needed to by showing how he developed his resolve. They only really needed to show this one fight; you just need to see how he's created, and how he ends, the rest doesn't matter.

There's only one thing left to explain, and that's how he managed to throw Miyu into the other world, which would bring us back to the start.

Yeah, we're actually pretty much through the truly unknown part of his backstory now and into parts that have already been referenced. We KNOW what the result is, just not the journey, we know he'll fight, we know that he won't "win" per se and will get captured, but that he'll be successful in getting Miyu out of there in a way that they cannot easily get around (however she jumps worlds, the Ainsworths can't just go after her at a whim they have to wait for the right lineup of events to cause a merger). We don't know details though, both of the battle and also stuff like whether he stayed merged with the card or it's some other effect and why they chose to capture and imprison rather then kill him or extra his soul and use it in a doll. If he did stay merged with the card perhaps that's impossible, there may be some extra shenanigans involved too in that his card is in fact an alternate version of him, something that nobody else involved can have happen.

My guess about "That" would be that it's Nine Lives, canonically both one of his most extreme possible 1v1 attacks and incredibly straining. If he was going to pull out a surprise equalizer against something vastly outclassing him that'd fit, though maybe he'll have something else I'm missing. It'd be pretty cool for example if Kiri's mystic code came into the picture anywhere, I don't see why Shirou couldn't use it if there were any bullets left particularly after installing Archer.

I agree though that we're probably looking at something like 3 chaps left. Wonder if we'll also see any brief bits from Miyu's PoV, like how she met Luvia after arriving in the new world.

No matter how different his ideals become, he can still manifest it, although the shape of it will alter based on his ideals changing as we see between Shirou and Archer's versions. Its noted even HF Shirou can still use his RM with training, since you never really lose the potential to do it once you have it. No matter what form Shirou takes, he's still a sword, even if he's Miyu's sword.

That's the only ability femgil would be concerned about slightly.

I'm not sure. Some of the stuff you list could be wrapped up in a real hurry if the author wanted to leave it to inference. Like, we've already had the doll/soul usage come up a few times now, so in turn they could handle Sakura for example in literally 1-2 pages. Ie., "hello Emiya, look whose soul we're having you face now, ZETSUBO MAX". Plus Berserkalot is another pretty hard counter to EMIYA, it'd be very Ainsworth if they selected that specific combo of the girl who loves him and he regrets about plus a hero with horrible compatibility for him just to really shove his face into the mud.

So yeah, unless there is some purposeful need to extend it more 3 chapters (~100-120 pages) seems like it could do it. The actual meat of this Assassin fight and his install/awakening has been 3 chapters.

You cannot beat the final boss before you know what he's all about and his monologues and shit, also a side character cannot beat the final boss period. Final boss has all the plot armor until you find out the truth about his motives.

Only one that can do it in the end is Ilya, and that's only after we finally know the full truth about Julian's motive.

Closest a side character has ever gotten to beating a main boss was Jounouchi vs Marik in Yu-Gi-Oh.

It's watchable on its own but you won't get a ton of the stuff, a proportion that grows as the series goes on. Still, if you're just willing to go along for the ride it's plenty fun on its own, you'll just be missing some of the depth and explanations. You'll also get spoiler'd on a lot of neat stuff that happens in FSN, F/Z, and so on since FKL was written with all that in mind.

I do recommend you watch the other stuff first, it'll make for a better experience. But if you really don't want to then you can still have a good time.
