LN series benefit even more than manga from an anime adaptation, because LNs are not serialized in magazines and they need the additional promotion, in order for fans to recognize the name and find the book among the shelves and among the hundreds of competitors. LNs have a wide audience but each single series struggles to stand apart from the others, that is why in this competitive space producers are eager to pay for adaptations, and why LNs have such ridiculous gaudy titles in order to stand out and be noticed. paying for an adaptation for your LN is a good investment.
and they offer the anime studio more creative freedom in the storyboard so studios like it as well. its a more interesting job than just recreating a comic book frame by frame.

While watching this, it made me think how Madan no Ou to Vanadis is actually pretty unique in comparison despite being kinda generic.

Around the 90s, Japan got hit by a huge recession. While their economy obviously suffered for it, the biggest problem was their culture was dwindling. Japanese people, as it turns out, were buying less and less of their own products. Even TV shows, which air for free, were being watched less often.

Because of this, there were two kinds of people Japan's culture started pandering to - otaku and yankii, whose entire existences center around buying Japanese products. While there are enough people here that like otaku-centered products that they're more well known than whatever products are made for yankii.

So long story short, Japan's economy is such a wreck that they have to cater to the lowest common denominator. Which isn't that rare of an occurrence, seeing as we have similar problems here, but you'd be deluded to think this trend will stop anytime soon.

As for WHY, that's a simple question: wish fulfillment. With the Japanese economy being as shit as it is, there is less of a push for traditional Japanese values, such as starting a family. Otaku, who gave up finding women in the three-dimensional plane, are fine with the wish fulfillment they're given. They don't even care about the way they're given it - you could repackage the same battle harem or reincarnation series a thousand times and they'd still buy ten copies. And let's not delude ourselves by saying we'd be above this crap. You've liked some sort of wish fulfillment series in one way or another.

Im going to write an LN about a guy who writes LNs.

He comes up with these genius plots but every time he sends them to his publisher they get shot down. One day, after his latest LN being shot down, he gets mad and writes the most generic drivel ever and sends it in. It becomes an overnight success. The author continues to write the series and makes it more and more hammy and retarded in an attempt to show people how stupid it is, but instead the sales just get better.

In the end he stops writing and his publisher starts hounding him for new books. He goes into hiding as he starts getting chased by not only an agent of his publisher, but other publisher's agents as well. They all have generic anime archetype personalities.

I think it comes down to the fact that there's a somewhat embarrassing layer of wish fulfillment that comes with shows like this one, and other shows that resemble it. Or at least it's embarrassing and intolerable to some people. And it's something that I don't think exists in SOL shows. The latter also don't rely so heavily on having a distinguishable plot anyhow, aside from the vague "a group of friends go to school together", so it's a little difficult to notice how similar they are.

There's a lot of the sameness, but they must change around something or bring better hooks to the table if they want to stay relevant and stick out from the rest, it's like watching evolution in progress; always the same core yet it tries something new every time to stay relevant or die; new girls, other main heroines, dragon girls, sword girls, incestual undertones, different setting, different timeline, magic or no magic, different weapon/powers, switching around character archetypes, adding a new layer of action and "plot" by creating "Savages" or "Abysses", ect.
Obviously it goes in circles but it's interesting to note, like watching the first creature that developed lungs struggle on land because it hasn't developed legs yet.
Harems and LNs are still the fast food of the industry, making up what they lack in quality with quantity, I have no delusions that what I subject myself to isn't mediocre at best, but I'll still watch some for this reason and for the fap bait also, arguing with you guys about seasonal harem is fun.

I think Antimagic showcases the publisher dilemna very clearly. The author states that he originally had no high school and the MC was never meant to be Kusanagi. No doubt after sending it to the publishers they turned around and said "add a high school, make it harem and then we'll talk".
