Hey guys, manga translator here (at least I admitted it!)
シットしてるんでしょ
Is "are you doing some shit again" a good translation for this? It feels a bit off, maybe I should word it a bit differently.
>spend ages typing out a well thought out counter argument
>press submit

W-whatever they were dumb anyway!
Is anyone here interested in doing fan translations of VNs and such? I'd really like to one day but it'll probably be at least 5 years until then.

Was it me?

>well thought out counter argument
Just where the fuck do you think you are.
>>139601142
It means "are you a shit eater".
>>139601192
Translating is quite interesting, but I found it to be too much language raping as that I'd actually want to do it.
>>139601171
That's what happens when you try too hard.
>>139601192
So what, are you proposing to start a translation group 5 years before you know jap? What a useless post.
I plan to sub JAV once I get good enough to understand it. There seems to be a lack of people doing that, atleast for the shit I watch.
>>139601327
>know what きもち means
>can sub all JAV now
>>139601399
See this is the type of shit I don't watch. If you watch JAV without a story you're a fucking pleb, it's pretty much the only thing worth watching JAV for.
>>139601256
I actually like that part and don't consider it "raping" - localizing that is. TL's aren't necessarily inferior in my opinion, see Jay Rubin.
>>139601327
No? I think it's pretty clear what was meant if you can read.
>>139601467
They're not inferior, but you can never transmit the same information contained in the original text.
>>139601467
>No? I think it's pretty clear what was meant if you can read.I read it wrong, I appoligize. I'm still mad about the stupid fuck from last thread.
Why do japanese have such horrible teeth?
Jesus , it`s almost as bad as brits.
>>139601504
Information? Sure. Just write 100 TL notes per line of speech. Essentially, a guide to japanese.
>>139601536
Weak jaws.
>>139601545
Yeah, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Even more so in the case of Japanese.
>>139601504
Information is absolutely the wrong word here, because you can. I think you meant "feel", which is true, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. A TL offers a different experience, which is basically a collab of the original author+translator.
>>139601142
Have you google it? What did it say?
>>139601192
Damn. Okay. Nice aspiration, good luck.
>>139601256
If you want to translate properly (and get highly paid), you probably have to go to school. It's not language-raping. I'd even argue that if you hold that mindset while doing a translating job, it's not going to be easy.
>>139601504
Translators get highly paid to do exactly that. To keep the original spirit of the source transmitted over to the second language.
>>139601142
Give context you fucking retard.
I'm guessing it's "You're getting jealous aren't you?"
>>139601531
Are you the underage b& or the guy who got BTFO?
>>139601702
Yes, that's what I mean.
A translation can certainly be on par with the original work, or can be even better, but it won't be an exact copy of the information contained in the original text in another language.
>>139601705
I guess language-raping is a bit of a strong term, but that's what it feels like to me when I compare an original text in Japanese to and English translation.
The translation can be good, but there's so much more information in the Japanese text that you simply have no chance of expressing.
>>139601941
The text basically said what I said. That translating is transmitting the spirit of the original text as close as possible.
The problem with fan translation as opposed to paid translation is that fans uses Translator Notes to keep the reference intact.
Sometimes paid translators just use a local thing to convey said spirit, whether it's of own volition or through order. It's called reversion.
Jokes, names, etc. Like Usopp has an Uso on it. It's perfectly justifiable in local version to just use lie-sopp or w/e the local language. That was before the internet though. Though maybe these days most names are kept intact because millenials have better access to informations.
Why is every fantasy LN/VN about a normal japanese high schooler who goes to a fantasy world
Why can't they just go entirely fantasy and start with a character who belongs to the world
>>139601536
>watching a variety show

>>139602516
do your teeth really fall off if you don't brush them
>>139602511
You mean those that got adapted to anime right?
It's just their culture.
>>139602511
That would force them to flesh out the world more.
If the character starts in a fantasy world, then you have to create backstory for that character, his friends, his family etc. If its a high school student then all the readers already know his backstory and the show can go on. Also it creates more conflict to pad the story with because of WACKY interactions between normie high schooler and fantasy life.
When you are just there to pump out a 50 page LN every few months, being forced to craft a tolkien world is not usually on your plate.

Japs just don't have much imagination when it comes to these things. Even when they're making a 'proper' fantasy setting they typically can't be arsed to put in the basic effort to make it look and feel at least somewhat credible.
>>139602678
Different fantasy backstories tend to vary more than high school student backstories do. If you go more specific like "Farm boy who discovers macguffin that leads him on an adventure" then sure

Benny isn't motivating, he just gets laughed at by Japanese people. I don't think that seeing someone who is better than you (assuming that you're a total beginner) still getting laughed at by natives is very motivating.

Those things are entirely dependant on the insights of the individual responding to stimuli, which is why I asked you what you find profound. What I was trying to allude to is that it boils down to the same manner in which people label things beautiful. It's in the eye of the beholder, isn't it?

>>139606807
>That's a strange way to spin it.
It's not. You don't have anything to replace them with, ergo, you want them to be removed. Your argument is that people should want change, ergo, for the same of change.
Posting this in the vain hope that the anime shitposter I'm replying to might hit up this thread and finally get his shit corrected.
迷惑をかけてすいませんね。
>>333186356
Wrong, "ra" does not include shitty foreigner pronounciations of what they think "ra" sounds like. It is simply a different way of writing ら. When I look at "ra" I don't suddenly start talking in a yankee accent 'cos I forgot I'm reading Japanese midway.
What you get from a symbol is what you associate with it, the sound is not implicit in the symbol for neither of the two. In other words if you didn't know how to pronounce ら, simply looking at it won't give it away to you. The same is true for "ra". Just because you already associate some sound with it doesn't mean it's the correct or intended association. It's you not knowing how to pronounce "ra" correctly.

That has more to do with trade and conquest. Really, no languages are "difficult" to learn because if they were, children wouldn't acquire them. Some shit takes more time than others but we still learn languages stupidly easy compared to other things which are taught in schools. For example, the drunk abo who spends most of his time getting smashed in the park near the train station in my town managed to learn English but do shit like calculus.

That isn't really a statement about difficulty but rather about exposure. People spend thousands of hours hearing their native language, thinking in it, attempting to talk in it, etc. They don't spent thousands of hours exposed to calculus.
Also, if you have a certain base level of mental ability "difficult" becomes synonymous with "time consuming" for most things. When people complain about ochem being hard they aren't usually complaining about the concepts, just the memorization.

current native speakers are the only judges for correctness in a language. there are only rules as long as they are observed by them. old-ass grammatical rules really don't necessarily matter unless they're commonly followed. if you were to think that way, you'd be permitted to speak totally incomprehensible gibberish, because way way back, that's just what correct english sounded like. get with the times or die. however, as a native speaker i found that usage totally understandable and not incorrect.

I got into gymnasium and somehow got the idea that a cigar would be appropriate for celebration. So I went to the tobacco shop near my school and picked up a cigar.
I ended up with a nicotine flash, which I quite enjoyed, I then periodically smoked cigars and at some point got a pipe. I went on with smoking pipes (I have about four of them now), though I rarely tasted the actual tobacco flavor.
I then ended up smoking cigarettes like a normal 16 year old edgy fuck would, which increased a whole lot once I got into second year and I could nonchalantly smoke right in front of the school building. This went on for about another three years or so, in which time I started rolling myself (pre-rolled tastes like ass compared to backwards-rolled cigs with thin papes and some nice tobacco). Then I woke up one monday and did not feel like smoking anymore. I'm not really sure why, but I'm quite glad it happened since the only reason I smoked was because I actually enjoyed it.
I've tried smoking cigarettes again multiple times since, but it either tastes like ass, or tastes somewhat decent but still doesn't have that appeal it used to have.
Though I want to give the pipe another try sometime.

Like how people try to say that 強い->つええ and such are Kansai ben but it doesn't matter because they are used in anime and shit

The built in popup dictionary feature on the paperwhite is it, more or less. You have to download or install the dicitonaries. It isn't remotely as fast or as smooth as hovering over things with a mouse, but that comes with the hardware.
Or do you mean something else other than a dictionary?

I feel kinda torn about this topic, /djt/. I begun to learn kanji without learning radicals but now its becoming a nightmare to remember them. Searching for a bit of info, found stuff saying that learning radicals is useless while other sites say the opposite. Should I learn all the radicals before continuing? Is grinding them through Anki a good idea?
What's the easiest way of converting an aozora-type .txt file completely into romanji?

Reading through the first volume of ばらかもん、fucking hell, nothing but hopeful guesswork for the when the locals use their local dialect. It makes sense in that it is overall consistent in my head as to what I assume it translates to in "normal" Japanese, but yeah. A few examples:
>こら!!なる(name)そんなトコで何ばしよる 危なかけん登ったらダメち言ったろ?
>あん子…本当にわかっちょっとか…?
>ありゃよか男ん来たね
>これから手伝い行くけんね あん人玄関から入らんけん気ぃつけれよ
You can see that at least it is consistent.

なる is the name of the character.
けん isn't used for から in that sense because they actually use から like から at other times. There is a similar sounding dialect using by a character in スケッチブック, as well. Apart from the kind of jutting ん sound in the middle of larger strings of mora, it actually reads kind of nice.

>>139621415
I heard here that it's a bad idea because sometimes they change the phrase too much and you start getting the wrong idea, but whatever the fuck.
>>139621415
Not really because I don't use translations as a detonative reference point like I do with dictionaries, in order to get a general feel for a word then get a feel for how it is used in a connotative manner in the context. It is a personal preference that might not be the better way to go about it but I guess time will tell.

it can be good and it can be awful simply because theres a lot of tls by people who dont know either language theyre working with (特に俺)
i dont think its bad to do if youre looking at things the right way and are working with a tl that has native people involved
>>139621839
oh and also dont forget theres lots of tls out there that went jp > cn > en and other similar combinations so in those cases you dont want to be dealing with those and they are pretty obvious most of the time
>>139621415
If it's a 100% accurate solid translation then sure (when you're still an ultra beginner at least), but it can re-enforce misunderstandings if the translator made the same mistake you did or if the translator made a mistake that you didn't. If you want a translation safety net for grammar then just use DoJG or something.
