But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

Using your logic, all fiction is derivative, so why do you consume fiction? Anime is hardly unique in this regard.

The difference maker is that decent works will try to mash qualities together in such a way that it creates memorable characters, a cool setting, good drama, funny comedy, and a fairly unique identity.

Generic haremshit doesn't fit this criteria. They just shit out a Gary Stu audience-insert MC, rehash a setting, pump out the most generic textbook plotline that you could imagine, slap some lazy cliched "comedy" and "drama" together, often not far form being word for word from other works, and call it done. A retard could write a battle harem in his sleep, and the no-standards publishers would give publish it. And then if it does get some things right, it's all cheapened by the fact that the whole universe bends around a horrible Gary Stu who's a shitty wish fulfillment device first and (barely) a character in a story second. Honestly, those works are worse than the ones that don't even try, because it's frustrating looking at what could have been with a proper main character.

I wouldn't watch anime if this genre was all that the medium had to offer. Last season, I had fun with Konosuba, which actually put some effort into the comedy and characters and had a pretty entertaining protagonist who was actually worthy of the role. Gate was also decent, and you'd be hard pressed to call that a lazy cliche for the medium. For this next season, Macross Delta's first episode was amazing.

There's more than one way to handle characters in a competent manner, you know.

The characters in Konosuba served their roles as vessels for comedy very well. Kazuma and Aqua were little shits (especially to each other) without crossing the line and being unlikable, Megumin was a funny chuuni, and Darkness was insane. It's also great how they made them all completely backwards for their jobs, such as the soldier job who can't hit anything and the magic DPS who can only blow her load once before being rendered completely useless. The protagonist has a love-hate with the girls. He considers all three of those retards to be a complete pain the ass (he wishes that he had he generic harem), but he also likes them. The story is set up around the protagonist having his expectations for a cliched JRPG story betrayed.

Something like Hundred isn't going to tread any lines, have any comedic sense, or have any kind of interesting direction like Konosuba did, or have anything resembling coherent relationships. You're going to have a passive protagonist who's always going to do the right thing and is going to lack any real personality traits that could possibly make him interesting (or he's going to be a /b/-tier jackass who's just as hollow as the above; just a different side of the same coin), and any redeeming qualities that his harem may or may not offer are going to be completely cheapened by their mysterious obsession with his dick.

There are honestly some independent web novels and games coming out of Japan these days that legitimately feel like more thought, passion and effort was put into creating them outside of maybe visuals than some big producer backed stuff. Personally I just think it's because a lot of Japanese media companies have gotten greedy as all fuck and just see everything in terms of pure yen signs and there's just not enough of an apparatus or really existence of creative types with enough clout to stand up to their bad ideas. I have a theory these are popular by accident. Only one MABH had to be successful in the past to spawn copies.

There are billions of billions of LNs, so how do you decide on which series to invest $6 and a couple hours of your time per each volume in a market with zero standards that would publish literally anything? You could narrow it down to things that have an anime adaptation so you can also watch it. In theory, having an adaptation to promote it should indicate some minimum level of quality. Then the MABH books ends up selling and producers decide it would be a good idea to adapt similar [identical] titles.
