Well then. Symbolism of both barely getting into the "upper flop line" of 2K.

>>

Last year's Winter did alright.
>>
>>138947796
That's Koyomimonogatari's job.
>>
>>138947818
Don't worry DRRR's average will lower than Grimgar, GATE, and of course Konosuba.

And before you said "storefront", here is the stalker estimated and actual sales of DRRR vol.1:
BD 1.06 DVD 0.82
That means DRRR's store front is pretty crap, and it's a DVD mainly show.
>>
>>138947829

That was lucky with the big franchise shows airing that season. This is how Winter should usually be --- cold, harsh sales, and without hope.
>>
>>138947716
>*5,251 Durarara!!×2 Ketsu

Ofc, sometimes best is the one that sells the most.
>>

No
>>
>>138947795

It's almost over at least. Probably the worst winter and maybe season ever for real. I thought last Winter was pretty bad but this was a new level. /a/ never really felt in it beyond the shitposting either.
>>
>>138948278
Sales still sales, so Koyomimonogatari will be number 1 of this season, also there are bunch of monogatari BD/DVD coming out this year, you don't have to worry SHAFTfag will forget.
>>
Grimgar get some nice boost in today's ranking thanks to episode 11, though next week is big week so i guess it won't show up til next Thursday with full weekly ranking.

*1 ミスチル
*2 ジュラシック
*3 グリムガル
*4 UNCLE
*5 ハイキュー
>>
>>138948185
People always get upset about stalker predicting low numbers for their favourite show, but in the end it's a pretty decent indicator.

It's only a prediction, it obviously can't look into the future, but it's pretty decent at its job
>>
>>138948395
People are too sensitive, when they aren't the ones going to buy it anyway.

The best selling thing last winter was the result of a video game tie-in release where you jerk off to idols that people used to troll Donald Trump. Truly an irresistible package for GRORIOUS NIPPON! There are fucking 9 of these and each one sold about 20,000 or more copies. No video game tie-ins or idolshit mega franchises this season.
>>
Funny thing is Grimgar's BD/DVD first week sales actually higher than LN volume.1 first week sales, the last time i saw something similar happened was Mouretsu Pirates.
>>
>>138948432
>>138947918
Last year had like fucking IM@S, Kancolle, Jojo, and Saekano all going over 10k.
>>
GuP Stalker points wasn't in the top ten so it should bomb but it has decent Amazon rankings, only beaten by Imas and of course monogatari. So I doubt it would be near its Stalker points when released, probably 10k to 12k max with Monogatari obviously getting around 15k to 20k minimum.
>>
>>138948559
You're biggest dumbass if you think anyone will fall to this, GuP movie already got 90k pt right now.
>>
>>138947716
So anything above 3k is good?
>>
>>138948625
anything above 10k is good
>>
>>138948625
No.
5k is average.
>>
>>138948625
Here's the truth: 3K is just an arbitrary number /a/ makes up. Only the actual producers know what constitute as good since they're the ones who set expectations and consider the associated costs that they, and not /a/, knows.
>>
>>138948625
What matters actually is not the numbers themselves (see >>138948700) but the ranking.
Those numbers are meaningless until you have something else to compare to.
>>
>>138948700
>3K is just an arbitrary number /a/ makes up
it's the misomething line, taken from the name of a show that sold ~3k and the producers said "barely broke even" so it's not arbitrary
but you're right that only producers know, not every show has the same budget, grimgar probably costed more to make than konosuba (altho the first probably had budget coming from all those insert songs)
>>
>>138948767
God fuck I wish every forgot about the Manabi line.
>>
>>138948784
I remember /a/ getting hyped about Manabi because the preview trailer made it look like an apocalyptic show with cute girls.
>>
>>138947716
Where did you get the numbers of Showa Genroku ? It wasn't listed for release this week.
>>
>>138948767
I doubt Grimgar costed more, both looks like about same, well maybe little more since Grimgar have 12 episodes while Konosuba have 10, but both still low budget show i believe.
>>
>>138948767
It is arbitrary, because again, that 3K number is specifically FOR Manabi Straight. And we don't know the exact context for broke even, especially when we consider the old argument about anime being advertised for source materials. Some anime may not break even or do well in BDs but it's possible that the source materials do exceptionally well to compensate. Or that the producers weren't really expecting it to do well or whatever. We don't and never will know, because anime, like other commercial ventures, aren't just one single project. And you can't base things on its own.

Bottom line is, Manabi Line was more of a vague guideline which /a/ ended up taking as some kind of rule. So yes, it is arbitrary because it is devoid of context in its usage.
>>
>>138947716
so no hope for grimgar second season?
too bad everything is flopping in the best season at least for me in the previous three years

at least we still have konosuba
>>

>>

Well for Grimgar's case i think Toho is getting small profit, Konosuba should be huge profit for Kadokawa.
But i'm more interest to Durarara, because i wonder is Aniplex losing money on this, since the sales of 2nd/3rd/4th cour dropped pretty hard compare to season 1.

Go send a email to Toho and say you want more insert songs(doesn't matter you actually want it or not, act like you want it even if you actually hate it), then maybe Toho will think about it.
>>
>>138948895

It's not nice to lie. I bet you go around and tell everyone you're not a massive faggot either.
>>
>>138948895
It's like this.

Toho banked on the insert songs in Grimgar instead of BDs and LN sales.

What happened is that the BDs and LNs are the one that became popular, resulting in shortage of stock.

The CDs flopped. Get it now?
>>
>>138948935
I heard something about Winter season being this bad because high schoolers and college students in Japan are taking their exams and are less inclined to keep track of what's airing.

Kekkai Sensen vs. Hibike again.
>>
>>138948941

The first cour of the new season had a clearly much lower budget than the original anime (There was even one infamous scene where they didn't even bother animating, just showing pictures fading in and out to indicate movement - I think that scene was eventually modified in the Blu-Rays though).

The main issue though, is that there was a new studio pretty much created just to finish the Durarara anime so that might have raised the costs, in spite of the show's actual low budget.

Depends on genre
3000 is usually the median sale of the year, so it is quite average

For most sequels, DOWN to 3k is bad
For most Japanese hyped shows, 3k is bad
For most Western hyped shows, 3k is good
For most original shows, 3k is bad
For most battle shounen manga adaptation that goes full fujo, 3k is bad
For most battle shounen manga adaptation that doesn't go full fujo, 3k is also bad, but expected
For straight sport anime, 3k is good
For gay sport anime, 3k is bad
For most battle harems that copies IS, 3k is good
For most battle harems that tries to not copy IS, 3k is bad
For non-battle harem anime, or non-battle anime that has 1 boy + 3 girls setup, 3k is good
For reverse harem shows, 3k is good
For most shoujo romance, 3k is good, but only if no big flop
For full male cast shows, 3k is bad
For full girl cast shows, 3k is bad
For advertising shows, 3k is good
For most history or documentary shows, 3k is good
For game adaptations shows, 3k is bad
For "deep" shows, 3k is good
For mecha shows, 3k is bad
...
>>
>>138949238

What matters is the profit margin.

Taking all your points, we should just stick with the Manabi Line for 3~4k and base the rest from there.

People from MAL must be more mature than you then. Galko is the definitive show for horny teenage boys who mistake saying dirty stuff as being funny.

Shows that Japan doesn't care about but MAL holds in high regard because they're DEEP, pretentious, dramatic and have a serious tone. They like circlejerking over these shows because it validates their hobby in their eyes as something artistic.

What does it matter to the anonymous users on /a/ if a large userbase on the MyAnimeList website likes it or not?
What does it matter to the anonymous users on /a/ if some people on the Reddit-website like a show or not?
What does it matter to the publishers in Japan what anonymous users on the /a/ board of 4chan think about the opinion of other English-speaking internet communities regarding some anime shows?

>DimW
Eh. It's in this bad spot "a good show but not enough to pay 400 bucks". Many people prefer buying manga instead. Disc sales won't be that terrible.

>>
It seems like sales keep falling every year, how long will it take for the number of shows per season to decrease? Right now it feels like there's not enough profit to justify this level of production.
>>138950076
It was in Japan, it had a moderate following here but not as much as some of the really big shows that season which had several threads per week like Yahari and UBW. You're lucky if you missed the sales threads back then, it had the misfortune of selling more than a KyoAni show airing in the same season and shitposters saw an opportunity for easy replies. That's not a dig at KyoAni, they're just really popular so it's very easy to bait the fans due to the sheer number of them, like casting a hook in a tank crammed with fish, you're bound to get a bite. It was really obviously a fabricated fanbase war waged by shitposters who didn't watch either show and just wanted to stir shit up/get attention. Both shows sold enough to make a profit so there was no reason to treat it like a competition anyway. 2007 fanbase wars were worse, bigger, and less fake.
>>
>>138956305
The focus is slowly switching from disc sales to multimedia projects so it isn't clear if amount of money is lower.
>>
>>138948882
The average budget for a 12 ep series is about $2 million.
Each vol costs like $60
60 x 3,000 = 1,800,000

So the manabi line (barely broke even) is legit if you adjust for inflation.
>>
>>138948941
> because i wonder is Aniplex losing money on this
They're not. Durarara sequels have no budget are only being made because of some fanboy procuded that wanted to see the series to the end. I'm absolutely sure Aniplex never compared the sequel sales to season 1 sales.
>>
>>138958322
producer*
>>
>>138952472

So I'm supposed to have the exact same taste as you or something. None of those shows qualified as particularly good to me save maybe Boku Dake for certain stretches early on. Now fuck off.
>>
>>138952697

Boku Dake was pretty well received in Japan, they just didn't latch onto and elevate it as this all time great series after only a few episodes like MAL tends to with certain things.
>>
>>138958161
Problem is, it's just theoretical.

Manabi line started because of the joke done in 2ch in 2007 about that.

Still, I want to know what the budget is now. Is it really $2m?

Studios have to at least triple the income from a series against their budget to consider it successful. Doubling it is not enough.
>>
>>138952890

This is pretty true, consider something like Monogatari, Fate or Saekano for example.
>>
>>138952752

In this case kind of yeah.
>>
>>138954154

The movie has about 30,000 more stalker points than the entire Winter season so far.
>>
>>138958468
The West tend to elevate something more than it should be because of supposed "deepness" in a show. Even if the deepness is actually just superficial in the long run.
>>
>>138950021

And that studio is handling the new season of Natsume's Book of Friends.
>>
>>138950076
It was popular during it's airing because "it's fun" and "muh cowboy bebop vibes" but after it aired no one gave two shits about it. The only thing that's even fucking memorable about the show is the ED theme.
>>
>>138958611

>>
>>138959272
It's a nostalgia show. If you've never been there or done that then the show doesn't make too much sense.
>>
>>138959396
If that's the case, DK was doomed to begin with. No one outside of Japan even knew what half the candy in this show was.
>>
>>138959451
And who the fuck cares about anything outside of Japan?
>>
>>138959063
Even worse. It was really shitty, literally wasting your time.
>>
>>138959063
Not even close, Aldnoah actually took itself seriously and spent a whole cour focusing on the shittiest characters in an already weak cast before finally killing them off for shock value and a cliffhanger only to resurrect them the next fucking episode.
>>
>>138959451
Why the fuck would that doom anything? Is the west buying BDs now?

>Implying the sales would change with a Hotaru focus

Meme shows don't profit/break even unless they are Hestia and Umaru.

>Konosuba is a meme and it makes money

Konosuba is a slightly above average take on overused LN nonsense. Dagashi is about a weird looking slut shilling candy and snacks and not much else.
>>
People in this thread seriously don't like Grimgar? I don't get the stance at all. It's pretty enjoyable for me at least, especially that they aren't OP from the get go and the really nice backgrounds.
>>
>>138966539

Personally I find it an interesting take on the "trapped in a fantasy world" genre. It's much slower and focused on scrub suffering and eventually the characters grew on me.

What I find unacceptable is those shitty music montages but I guess they needed the money.
>>
>>138966539
It's shit.
>>
>>138965069
The anime royally screwed over the manga in more ways imaginable, it adapts a fucking chapter into 24 minutes, changes the contents, changes the characters behaviours and cuts the most funny chapters or outright skips them.

You can't compare them.

>Dagashi is about a weird looking slut shilling candy and snacks and not much else.
No you dipshit, it's about a candy chuuni, do you now see what the anime had done?
>>
>>138967875
Typical /a/. If you gave reasons sure, I'd accept that we have differing tastes. Just saying it is shit just shows me you've probably read none of the source material or watched all of it.
>>
>>138968509
It isn't typical /a/. It's just some ADD kid who had anger issues and got banned on MAL.
>>
>>138966539
I like it in its own way. But that doesn't mean I don't think there's no problem.

Too many static shots, grieving for Manato took 2 episodes way too long for my taste, obvious commercializing of insert songs as well. Also the action scenes, are subpar at best.

What I can say I actually like is Haru and Merry's voices. I can actually feel the different inflections the VAs put into them.
