>The general Japanese animation market is down 6.9% from the previous year, with total sales of 49.082 billion yen (about US$440.948 million). The market has now sustained a two-year consecutive decline. The last time that the market garnered sales below 50 billion yen was in 2004, where the market earned 44.091 billion yen (about US$396.161 million).

How do we save anime? What do we need more of?
>>
>>138903973
We need less anime, the market is over ssaturated with cheap shit that of course isn't going to sell.
>>
>>138904005
This.
>>
So, it's adjusted back down to 2003 or so?
>>
More harem anime.

feel free to fill out the template with your ideas
>>
Honestly, Osomatsu san is a recent step in the right direction. Relatively unique, aims for a big but not entirely tapped market, and high quality. It just panders smarter instead of harder.
>>
We just need less of everything.
>>
>>138904005
Pretty much this. Hard for anything to stand out when there's so much similar shit coming out at the same time. It's not like the otaku market is so discerning that they will turn up their noses to derivative junk, but if there's 3 very similar derivative shows at the same time it just weakens the draw.
>>
>>138904144
is it really worth watching?
>>
>>138904073
1. Alright guys, we need a new best selling anime
2. more LN adaptation
3. more manga adaptation
4. more VN adaptation?
>>
I'm not really surprised considering there hasn't been any hyped original anime in the last 2 years. The last major hype storm was KLK. What has the industry produced since then? Just remakes, sequels, and adaptations of established franchises really. You look at 2015 and there was basically no buzz about anything. It wouldn't make sense if sales went up for that year.
>>
>>138904236
>more VN adaptation?
Fuck no, VNs adapt to anime as well as vidya does to movie, for those with multiple routes, at least.
>>
>>138904144
>even though we fuck each other every night, we are not gays.
>>
>>138904185
It's funny as fuck (if a little bit hit and miss) so yeah, particularly if you like Gintama since they share a director.
>>
>>138904292
Why can't they choose one route instead, like mass twincest in yns
>>
Wasn't fucking Love Live in 2014 though?
>>
>>138904256
Charlotte came close in hype, at least in Japan.
>>
>>138904256
> hype storm was KLK
if /v/ and reddit being retards is a hype storm then sure, realistically there hasn't been a big show since madoka
>>
>>138904345
Yet it deflated itself in the end. And was only 1 cour besides. 2015 is like the year of self-deflating hype. Charlotte, OPM, Gakkou Gurashi, Overlord, Kekkai Sensen, Junketsu no Maria. All these shows got a lot of attention either before they aired or during, but ended up petering out at the finish, no staying power at all. The fact they were all 1 cour wonders probably contributed, with 2 cour shows it sticks around long enough that people get used to it.
>>
>>138904340
Yes.
>>
>>138903973
2015 was shit.
>>
>>138904405
madoka was a one cour, you're a retard, klk is in the "sold barely above average" club as wel
>>
>>138904438
Madoka has nothing to do with this, why do you keep bringing it up?
>>
>>138904005
>We need less late-night anime
FTFY
>>
>>138904438
KLK averaged nearly 12k per volume, that's way above average. In fact it qualifies as a best selling series.
>>
>>138903973
The Japanese population is shrinking, and there are fewer young people who are the ones who buy anime.
>>
>>138904256
Are you basing 'hype' on how much /a/ cares? Osomatsu is an original anime even if it's technically a sequel, and the sales speak for itself in regards to how popular it is in Japan.
>>
>>138904474
because it was the last show that had an impact on the market? are you retarded? klk, opm and the other reddit trash sold less than fucking kuroko no basket
>>138904489
more like 9k, jesus how fucking retarded are you? do you know how much madoka, monogatari or snk sold? if it's below 50k then it's just wow, you managed to not suck complete dick, good job
>>
>>138904005
It's less about the quality and more about the economic situation Japan had got into.
>>
More comedy
More honest, fun harems that don't get bogged down with ACTION or DRAMA plotlines that go nowhere.
More action originals that aren't just bland toku derivatives
Fewer Light Novel adaptations

The biggest problem facing the anime industry right now is the abysmal quality of the writing and scenario planning. Part of this is the fault of the source material, as a disproportionate number of shows being made are adaptations of lousy LNs or "safe" manga that don't end up actually being all that safe, but the other half is just the writing and scenario planning in general adhering too strictly to a formula that just isn't working.

When you spend 8 episodes fucking around and then suddenly introduce PLOT in the last 2, nobody cares about the plot, and you spent a whole cours doing nothing. The formula hasn't adapted to this obsession with single-cour running slots the industry has turned towards lately and the result is tonnes of shows that try to be both plot-driven and character-driven and don't have enough time to do it right. Often with adaptations it feels like the focus is exclusively on pandering to fans of the source material and not making a coherent, structured standalone show that new fans can enjoy. Material is cut, pasted, switched and swapped until the whole thing is a frankenstein's monster and often for no other reason than to just make sure that all of the characters in the top 5 slots of the popularity poll get introduced and their screentime maximized. The show fails to be enjoyable on its own and stands only as a big "buy the source material' mascot advertisement.
>>
>>138904511
>more like 9k
No, I mean 11,700 per volume. I'm looking at the data right now. And yes I know how much Monogatari and Madoka sold, so fucking what? You seem to use /v/ logic where if something isn't in the top 3 then it's shit. In the anime market selling over 10k is a fantastic success, the vast majority of titles don't even get close to 10k per volume.

And anyway, anime sales only went up after Monogatari and Madoka aired, so they have nothing to do with this since we're talking about a very recent decline, so we have to talk about what changed from 2013 to 2016. Are you even following this discussion?
>>
>>138904256

Bail out Japan's 200% of GDP debt

But since that's impossible, probably more variety. It costs like 500$ to buy a full season, can't sell too many anime to one guy, he'll starve.

What about merchandise? It's not a strong market like dvd/bd media?

>>138903973

Make a law between studios: A new studio need at least x years of being in the work before making an anime, every studio can only make one anime per season and only 2 one cour anime per year.

> 9362 Kill la Kill
whoopdiedoo, and yeah it's not even knb or infinite stratos league, so it's garbage, only /v/tard crossie newfags like you go on about garbage shows like this being "super hype"
that's the fucking point you retard, jesus, anime sales went up because madoka and monogatari had an impact on the market, now after 5 years that impact is gone and there were no other big shows to keep people buying anime, that including klk and the rest, since they're shit shows that aren't top 3 in even their own seasons
>In fact it qualifies as a best selling series.

Too many shit adaptations, its not like the source material has to be the greatest but their adapting bland LNs and VNs, sometimes even manga, that has absolutely nothing going for it just to keep their animators busy. I rather watch garbage that at least has some high points than something so forgettable as a lot of these adaptations
>>
The market basically needs a complete overhaul. Less shit adaptations that just serve as advertisments for the source material, more original shows that are good and maybe releases that aren't $80+ for 2 episodes.

So basically shit that isn't going to happen.
>>
Currently Amazon jp rankings has imas #5 and konosuba #6 so it is okay sales wise.
>>
Curious, but is there any place with comments from anime buyers in Japan about how shows are priced in the rest of the world? I wanna know what they think about the fact that I can buy all of a 50 episode series like Soul Eater for a third of the price that they pay for 2 or 3 episodes.
>>
Bring back harem comedies. Most harems these days spend way too much time on chuuni bullshit like fighting and magic and pseudo-mecha and all that shit no one cares about. Just give me fucking girls and humor, cut back on the infodumps.
>>
More ecchi.
>>
We need to sacrifice a couple of studios. How about Kyoani and White Fox/Silver Link?
>>
>>138903973
the anime market is too specialized toward selling to the hard core otaku. It needs a new business model, which supports general entertainment and rewards quality.

Unfortunately~ this is unlikely.

So what will have to happen is studios will have to die. The whole industry will contract, and the best of the best will survive by either entrenching itself deeper into it's niche audience or finding a new one. Either way the market got bloated around 2007~ish, it was just a matter of time before it came back down to earth.
>>
2015 was one of the worst anime years I've seen, no surprise about the low sales.

>Just remakes, sequels, and adaptations of established franchises
Sounds familiar
>>
Of course the industry is going to struggle harder and harder when they try to enforce the status quo of otaku being the key buyers

It's pitiful how little animation is being utilized as a medium. It's "safer" to adapt some light novel, manga or even 4koma playing it straightforward, if not page for page, with art styles that typically only vary in small details like character anatomy. Dozens of forgettable series like this pumped out like an assembly line and yet many of them end up being the best selling, with even those sales rarely being impressive.
>>
The problem is that an increasing proportion of seasonal anime are intended only as advertisement for their source material; this has largely always been the case, but only now are we seeing seasonal lineups dominated (>80%) by LN/VN/manga adaptations. These tend not to be products the studios animating them can take pride in, rather they are mere mealtickets.

>What do we need more of?
Money.
And a lot of it.

Money is what facilitates production of original anime, and feeds the auter directors that conceive them.
Money is what keeps talented animators employed, preventing mass-outsourcing to Koreans.
Money is what buys primetime/priority airing slots, giving a wider audience and the opportunity of less censorship.
Money is what lets a studio adapt a piece of material to its conclusion; instead of dropping on a cliffhanger or hamfisting an original ending.

Money doesn't grow on trees however. The Diet needs to implement some kind of Government-sponsored incentives for domestic creative ventures. Maybe make 50% of film (and anime) production budgets tax-deductible like Germany does.

this so much this put some quality into things like one piece i mean it makes no sense you have a top selling series but then you half ass it on animation. TLDR
Less shit more quality.

Utterly irrelevant for Japan's animation industry itself as long as they're not the ones setting up shop in the parts of the world where they're selling the license themselves.

>showing that overall DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales are down 5.1% in 2015

>By comparison, 2014 saw an overall decrease of 8.7% from 2013.

>The DVD and Blu-ray Disc market has been in annual decline for 11 straight years.

>As of 2015, the market has declined about 40% from its peak in 2004,

>The last time that the market garnered sales below 50 billion yen was in 2004,

So basically, after BD/DVD, anime has been selling 50b+ for about ten years straight, and it's now reflecting the lack of interest in BD/DVD that nips are having

Not exactly.

The BD/DVD market is not related directly with the JP animation. There are series, movies, etc.

Think like:
>BD/DVD hits its peak in 2004 with other mediaa
>JP animation sees this and starts using BD/DVD as a result in 2005
>JP animation starts selling like hot cakes

Start cutting fantasy harems for a start.

Do more old adaptations.
More good originals that don't rely on cliches or mecha.
Cut down on the fucking tropes we see every year.

Ruru and Kurumi the loli and the fairy are anime only characters and they replaced most of Reina's scenes with Haru with Mai or cut them completely. example being that Mai is the one who gets her ass painted red in the anime where as in the novel it's Reina who gets her butt painted.

Koito is a generic TsunKuudere whose a bitch to everyone else but very nice to Haru when they're alone. Where as in the anime she starts off cold, then becomes sorta nice, then goes to being smiling and having fun with them.

They cut out most of the harem elements such as the girls not really getting along with each other, doing that whole arm drag thing with Haru and declaring each other love rivals.

The anime feels more like a group of lonely kids hanging out then it does harem, even with flags being raised when every girl has a moment of "I want to fug him" face like Mai in the monkey episode, Koito in her the episode she debuted in, and Reina in the bunny episode.

Basically it's a harem without the harem elements. That makes for a pretty dull show because if they're not trying to fuck MC and getting along, then it's nothing but super natural slice of life which is probably what Kyoani wanted.

The first quote is about the overall DVD/Blu-Ray market.

The second quote is specifically about anime sales.
>>
>>138903973
>What do we need more of?
Time for studios to make anime. Shit quality anime ultimately stems from producers having to rush work to meet absurd deadlines. The only real way to fix this is for publishers to request less anime produced per season, which doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon.
>>
>>138912597
Why would they? They work for animé companies. They take the jobs, they shit out the product and move on to the next. It's not the producers fault their bosses and CEO's are stuck in the 1900's of business.
>>
They need to stop adapting things.

Or at least adapt things that would actually sell. Too many adaptations only exist to promote the source material, which indeed is how it's always been, but that does not help the animation studios any when the adaptations are shit and sell below average
>>
>>138913198
Why don't the studios negotiate a fixed rate rather than hinching their bets on the animé being succesful? It's not every day that Attack on titan or Naruto comes along after all.
>>
>>138903973
I have no data to back up my claim just an observation. but I do think anime is MUVH more watched now than ever. I think most of a/ would agree that it's becoming more agreed more mainstream among a variety of cultures. expl. atot, opm, tghoul, etc and that anime similar has done very well in the market place. but people are not buying the hard copies when you can stream now for free on most sites. also most companies now poor loads of money into the merchandise and will make more from that than the BR sales. so no anime will not go away for quite some time.
>>
>>138903973
>What do we need more of?

Japanese people.
>>
>>138913442
Well seeing as that's clearly not going to happen any time soon, I think the Japanese studios are going to have to come to terms with the idea that more and more of their profits will come from overseas. They need to put more effort into marketing in other countries. I'm starting to see this for the more popular shows already, thankfully.

despite the birth rate being low isn't the country still overpopulated? It seems like a lower birthrate would be a path towards some kind of equilibrium. But what do I know?
>>
>>138917994
Their food and housing prices aren't fucking wild, according to basic supply and demand economics they aren't overpopulated.

Unless you mean something silly like "they have skyscrapers" or "It looks uncomfortable to live in those spaces"
>>
>>138917994
But yes, if something goes down over time and no government force was used to put them down, a decreasing population does imply that there is an equilibrium population below the current one.

Sorry for kneejerking.
