Its about the children crusade, I think those in the pic are 14-15 years old, coupled with crusade era which I assumed not really good to the peasants food wise.Not really an edge fest, just wiki the children crusade to get an idea.

So is this basically another medieval suffering manga a la Wolfsmund but with more kids for extra despair?

It's not an edgy for the sake of being edgy kind of story. If you're famiiar with the mangaka, Furuya Usamaru, he's done other drama about children confronting the bitterness of reality or specifically the corruption of innocence for Litchi Hikari Club.

Innocents Children's Crusade is a refinement of this latter theme. Basically a tragedy about pure children confronting the realities of adulthood, religion, and medieval society. Definitely very gruesome, but it works up to a cathartic climax and conclusion.

Is the horn explained? It's obvious enough that the miracles were fake, but what about the horn just appearing out of nowhere? "whoops, don't sweat the details"?

I've only read a couple Furuya, so maybe I'm just making too much out of incidental details, but the initial presentation of Etienne and Kai's situations seemed similar. Unusually religious young men, both have semi-supernatural senses (weather for Etienne and sounds for Kai), and obviously the visions of god floating over the earth to signify that they are chosen for something.

That's more surface similarities. Marie is more of a story about free will and questioning the nature of a utopia.

Innocents Children's Crusade is less philosophical in contrast. It's a very grounded human tragedy about the corruption of youth.
